The Crack in the Code
A bossy supervisor at a museum is...
more
A bossy supervisor at a museum is training the staff to give tours. Suddenly, the mouths of the new hires drop in unison. Resting at the base of a statue of Lincoln is a bloody skull and spine. Written in blood on the statue: "Where is the rest of me?" A good question. CUT to Bones and Booth, who continue to argue over the perfect new house on their way to the crime scene. Later, Bones examines the spine and discovers that it has been dissected and then reassembled in the incorrect order. "It seems the killer reassembled the vertebrae out of order on purpose," Bones says. "He's sending us a message." Back at the lab, Bones identifies the victim as a female in her early 20s. Wendell enters the lab with more horrifying news: the blood on the statue is from five different people. Later, Booth investigates the museum's nighttime cleaning crew and discovers one, a gentleman named Sam, has an extensive felony record. Sam is soon brought in for questioning. The man insists to be reformed, but agrees to show Booth the "blind spots" where one might hide in the museum from security cameras. Meanwhile, DNA results come back and identify five field agents from the Washington D.C. FBI office. Uh oh. Booth arrives at the Hoover building to find a desperate reporter, Ezra, looking for a comment from Caroline. Booth shoos away the man, but not before the journalist spills secret details of the case. Either there is a leak at the Jeffersonian or the killer is talking to the press. Booth then discovers that the FBI agents are alive and well. The killer most likely obtained the men's blood from a recent FBI blood drive. Clearly, he wants the FBI to notice him. Back at the lab, Hodgins is practically pulling his hair out trying to solve the mystery of the rearranged vertebrae. "The code has to be simple," he says to Angela. Why did the killer arrive the pieces in the order he did? Later, Booth discovers a laser sighter hidden inside a mint container. It was obviously assembled at home and used to temporarily blind the security cameras. "So we're looking for a tech savvy guy who hates the FBI," Caroline observes. One potential suspect is a computer hacker named, Christopher. Booth and Sweets visit Christopher to discover he hasn't been past his front door in six weeks because he is under house arrest for hacking into government systems. Christopher wears an ankle monitor. "I'm not a criminal, I'm a hacktivist," the man says with a dislikable smile. He also mentions that Ezra, desperate-for-a-story reporter, recently called to ask about the murder case. Back at the lab, Angela and Hodgins try to crack the vertebrae code. They isolate the vertebrae numbers and realize that the string of numerals indicates an address -- the address to the Justice Department archive building. CUT to Bones and Sweets who pay a visit to the archive building. It isn't long before Booth spots blood on the floor ... and then body parts on a shelf. "That 'Where's the rest of me question?' I think we just answered it," Sweets says. He then goes through files found next to the remains. All of the files are of protected government informants with serious criminal records. Hmmm. Later, Caroline is FURIOUS because Ezra has found out about the remains in the FBI archive. Ezra claims to have a "source" on the inside. Sweets then enters with news: one of the informants in the file, Daniel, ran a real estate scam in which one of his victim's committed suicide in front of h is daughter. That daughter is an IT specialist at a local hospital named Sophia. So Sophia has the motive and the technical expertise. Booth and Sweets visit the woman, who is still distraught. She says she knew Daniel was an FBI informant because she was informed by reporter Ezra. Booth then gets a call from Angela, who explains that facial reconstruction has identified the victim as a Danish woman working as a house sitter. CUT to the house, where Booth and Sweets discover the swimming pool filled with blood. "This is where he killed her," Booth notes. On a nearby fence, written in blood, is "This will not stop." CUT to the lab, where Wendell and Angela scan the victim's skeleton and run it through a program that suggests causes of death. But before the program can show them anything, the screen suddenly flashes and then goes dark. Has the Jeffersonian been hacked? It certainly has. Later, Angela explains that the virus originated in her computer, so it had to come from something she uploaded. And the only thing she uploaded were the bone scans. "Are you telling me the virus came from the bones?" a disbelieving Camille asks. Believe it. Hodgins, meanwhile, has determined that the woman was killed with a stick used by divers to repel sharks. The shock from the stick literally produced an explosion, explaining the scattered nature of the remains. Booth, meanwhile, brings in Ezra for questioning. "You've got nothing on me!" the reporter says. Spits Booth: "I don't think you have a source. I think you killed that girl to save your career!" Hours later, Booth is called to a new crime scene by Caroline. Turns out that yet another body has been found -- this one hung from a flagpole and also killed with a "bang stick." It is reporter Ezra. "Someone really didn't want Ezra Crane to reveal his source," Caroline notes. Then it gets really complicated. Turns out Ezra's body never made it back to the Jeffersonian because someone was able to manipulate the paperwork at multiple government sites and then declaring the body contained a deadly virus. It was immediately cremated. The team gets nervous. The killer is obviously a genius, capable of hacking into government databases and lines of communications and writing a computer virus onto bone. It must be Christopher, who is soon brought in for questioning. Of course, the cocky hacker explains that his ankle monitor clearly gives him an alibi. It's true. As Sweets explained, Christopher did it but there is no way he could have done it. It appears that our favorite crime fighters have been outthought and outmaneuvered on this particular case. Still, Booth SWEARS to nail the hacker at some point. CUE a MONTAGE of the team furiously investigating every possible angle ... while Christopher uses household items to build his next dastardly device. The episode ends with Bones and Booth visiting their new home. It's a total wreck ... at least for the time being. "I can see the bones -- the bones of the house," Bones says. "I can imagine it whole." The pair embraces.

more
We open with Jacob Broadsky taking in a little target practice with Matt, who reveals that the FBI had visited him and is looking for Jacob. "You have to trust I'm still working for the good guys," says Jacob, before asking Matt for his help and his rifle. In the next scene, we go to the diner, where Booth , Bones and Sweets eat lunch. They discuss Jacob's case. "From now on, it's all Broadsky all the time," he promises. Vincent enters and announces the "Tyrannosaurus Rex has arrived," which makes Bones quite excited. Apparently, the pair are presenting a paper on the subject. Booth then gets a text: Jacob has been spotted.Booth arrives at the graveyard to discover Jacob left flowers on a grave. Inside the flowers is a cell phone. It begins to ring and Booth anxiously tells Agent Shaw to track the number. Booth answers: "Hello, Jacob." Jacob insists he is doing good work by killing bad guys. "Don't you forget for a moment that you never see the bullet that takes you down," Jacob warns before hanging up. Later, a very pregnant Angela identifies the cell tower transmitting Jacob's call -- something Booth will be able to do in the future with a handy cell-phone app. Shaw then visits and points out Matt recently withdrew a large amount of money from his bank account.Sweets, Shaw and Booth go to Matt's compound -- and find a decomposing body. Matt. Naturally, Matt's rifle is missing. Shaw then spots a camera. Jacob is watching them. Back at the lab, Camille examines Matt's body and determines the killer searched the victim's wallet ... but didn't take any cash. Interesting. Hodgins, meanwhile, discovers Vincent and Bones are planning to present a paper on a theoretical arm-wrestling match between a human and a dinosaur. He is VERY excited and soon constructs a robotic armature for Vincent which mimics the strength of the T-Rex's tiny arms. They arm wrestle -- and Hodgins wins. "Yes!" Hodgins yells. "That's one for humanity and zero for the tyrant lizard!" Camille urges the two to get back to work.In the next scene, you see Jacob setting up equipment in a sniper's nest atop a massive crane overlooking the Jeffersonian. Who is he targeting? Shaw? Booth? Sweets? Hodgins? All of them? Inside the lab, the cell phone Booth found at the gravesite rings. Booth hands the phone to Vincent, telling him to keep Jacob talking while Booth attempts to trace the call using Angela's application. Suddenly, the glass above SHATTERS. Jacob has shot through the window -- and Booth tackles Vincent ... but it's too late. The bullet intended for Booth has hit Vincent in the chest. "Please don't make me leave," Vincent gasps. "Don't make me go ... please ... don't ... please." Then Vincent goes still, clearly dead.Later, the team meets -- and can't believe Vincent is dead. "He was the sweetest guy ... with all his facts," Hodgins says. Booth enters with news: Jacob was on a construction crane and escaped without a trace. "I don't blame myself," he says. "I blame the guy with the gun." His face says otherwise, especially after Bones points out her partner still has "blood on your hands." She means it literally, of course. Booth then turns to Bones: "You're staying at my apartment tonight." Later, Hodgins discovers a single card was taken from Matt's wallet and left behind traces of gold. The scene changes to Booth, who is asleep in his bed. He hears a noise, and leaps up, grabbing his gun. It's only Bones, who remains distraught over Vincent's final words. She cries, and Booth does his best to comfort her. Booth hugs his partner. They lie down in bed (but not like THAT). She continues to cry while Booth holds her. The next morning, Camille explains to Angela how she had to call Vincent's mother and break the news. Both begin to cry. Hodgins enters with news: the gold came from an access card. Jacob wanted it. Later, Booth interviews Matt's boss Skip at an area trucking company. The boss explains the company doesn't use access cards. HOWEVER, the boss explains everybody needs such a card to access a nearby shipping port.Bones, meanwhile, confesses to Angela that she crawled into bed with Booth the previous night. "What exactly happened after you crawled into bed with Booth?!" a super-excited Angela exclaims. Bones only smiles, and the two are interrupted by Hodgins, who announces he has news on the bullet that killed Vincent. Angela tells her husband to leave immediately so she can hear the rest of Bones' story. Hodgins is confused. "Away!" Angela demands. So a flustered Hodgins goes to Camille, explaining he found traces of sea salt among other telling substances. "The bullet was made near the ocean," Hodgins says. "Someplace where they decontaminate produce."Booth and Shaw, in the meantime, arrive at the port. Booth readies his rifle, while Shaw calls in the cavalry. Time to go hunting. Booth moves between the massive cargo containers, looking for his quarry. Suddenly, Bones and Hodgins call -- and Booth, who can't speak lest he give his position away, listens as the two explain Matt's bones reveal Jacob hit the man where a very powerful bone resides. In other words, it's likely Jacob's hand is broken. "That may have just saved my life," Booth whispers. Suddenly, Jacob shoots, and misses. "You want to give up?" Booth yells. Not a chance. Moments later, Booth gets the drop on Jacob, and tells the sniper to lower his weapon. Jacob makes a move, and Booth FIRES.Jacob falls to the ground. He has been shot in the leg. "Are you sure you're the good guy in all this?" Jacob asks. Yes, Booth is sure. Back at the lab, Bones gets a call and repeats the news to the team: "Booth got Broadsky!" Everyone celebrates, and Bones and Angela share a conspiratorial smile.Later, the team gathers to say goodbye to Vincent, whose body is about to be shipped back home. They share stories about the intern -- mostly bizarre facts Vincent had shared. They conclude the unorthodox wake by singing Vincent's favorite song: "Coconut." The scene ends with Booth and Brennan's arms linked.

The Sign in the Silence
A policeman (Reggie Watkins) drives...
more
A policeman (Reggie Watkins) drives through the city on a rainy night -- and spots what he thinks is a homeless person in an alley. Turns out it's a bloody girl. She opens her eyes, grabs and knife and SLASHES at the officer, who quickly steps away. Whoa. The next day, B&B talk about what to buy for Angela and Hodgins' baby. "I'm going to be the only one without a child," Bones (Emily Deschanel) observes. Caroline (Patricia Belcher) enters, telling B&B the bloody girl, dubbed Jane Doe (McKenzie Applegate), found in the alley is a "deaf mute." It's also not her blood.Grace (Michelle L. Gardner), a social worker assigned to protect the girl, resists Bone's attempts to test the girl to find her age and identity -- as well as the location and identity of the person who is obviously missing so much blood. The team finally convinces the attorney to allow for tests, but Jane Doe has other ideas. She grunts, jerks and tries frantically to get away. Arastoo (Pej Vahdat) notes the girl is clearly in distress. "Right now you have to see her as evidence," Bones says rather coldly. Booth (David Boreanaz), meanwhile, analyzes bloody money found in Jane's pocket and determines that it comes from an ATM as the serial numbers are sequential. They might be able to track the money to a specific ATM.Later, Jane STILL refuses to cooperate and Bones grows more and more impatient. Sweets (John Francis Daley) pulls the good doctor aside to remind her of how she felt while in foster care. "I wasn't a potential murder suspect," Bones argues. Sweets convinces Bones to rethink her approach. "She's terrified," he concludes. So Bones takes an alternate approach and has the girl hold her arm over an X-ray device. "She's definitely over 13 years old, but less than 17," says Bones after examining the bones. Unfortunately, no missing minors matching the girl's description can be found in the area. Camille (Tamara Taylor) calls with news: the blood indicates a white male in his mid 40s. Booth then uses photos from the ATM to ID the man: Duval Price. B&B immediately head to the man's apartment -- and find blood on the floor. They follow it to the man's dead body. He is long dead."Why would she kill him and take the weapon with her?" Sweets asks B&B at the diner. "We just put her away without knowing all the facts." Bones says no -- and points out the heavy oak door was splintered, an impossible task for a young girl. Later, Bones watches tape of Jane signing during an earlier interrogation and picks up the girl's signing "dialect." It's a rural dialect. Angela (Michaela Conlin), who is having occasional labor pains, does a quick computer scan and identifies it as coming from southern Pennsylvania. Angela also reconstructs a crumpled paper found in Jane's pocket and discovers a bus ticket. Booth tracks that bus number to a specific small town in Pennsylvania. It gets better: another scrap of paper in Jane's pocket came from a hardware store -- the only one in town.Owners Mike (Sean O'Bryan) and Denise (Pamela Gray) immediately identify a photograph of Jane Doe. "That's Amy!" Mike exclaims. "That's Amy." Mike then explains Amy had run away before and come back. "We couldn't handle her," Denise admits. "She would kick me and fight." Naturally, the parents are anxious to see their daughter. Back at the lab, Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) examines the broken-door fragments and notes they do not match the fibers found on Amy's clothes. Perhaps the door was already broken down when Amy entered. Camille then lets it slip Angela had a few contractions -- and Hodgins FREAKS OUT. He runs to his wife, who admits she didn't want to worry her husband this early.Later, Bones reexamines Amy's X-rays and discovers signs of child abuse. Bones then sits down with Amy and Grace to try to convince the girl to submit to full X-rays.. "I know what you've been through," Bones says with Grace signing to translate. "I know you've been abused." Amy signs "no one will believe me." Says Bones: "People lie, but bones always tell the truth ... no one can say you're lying." Amy agrees -- and the new X-rays reveal years of horrible abuse. "This girl was used a punching bag," says a sad Arastoo. "It's why she didn't want us to contact her parents." Later, Caroline hands Amy's parents a court order preventing them from seeing their daughter. Mike vehemently denies any wrong doing. Bones then has a brainstorm -- and reaches out to feel Mike and Denise's noses. They don't have the tell-tale signs of Amy's condition, which is genetic. "They aren't Amy's parents," Bones concludes. Uh oh.The parents are soon in the interrogation room. Sweets feigns sympathy with the parents to get them to admit to occasionally beating her. "We just wanted her to mind," Denise explains. "Her life couldn't be normal if she doesn't mind." Mike, growing increasingly angry, EXPLODES and PUNCHES his wife for talking to the authorities. Booth quickly takes the man down, delivering a few PUNCHES of his own. Bones, meanwhile, examines Price's bones and recreates a scene in which the man collapsed on top of Amy, who then stabbed in the back. "Amy was just trying to defend herself," Bones concludes. CUT to Hodgins, who determines the shattered wood had swelled due to moisture. Checking the humidity readings from that night, he determines the door was broken two hours AFTER Price was killed. "So someone else knocked down the door, saw Price and just left him there," Angela says. Hodgins also found fibers from a flannel shirt.Suddenly, Angela SCREAMS. It's labor! Hodgins LOSES it. He can't find his keys. Hodgins continues to panic as Angela concentrates on her breathing. "Men are so not made for this," Angela says between exhales. Booth, in the meantime, reports a notepad was found at the crime scene with Amy's bus number and arrival time written on it. Also: phone records reveal Mike called Price one hour before Amy arrived. CUT to Bones, who tells Amy she knows what happens. It goes like this: Mike couldn't risk Amy telling anybody about the abuse, so he called his buddy Price to kidnap Amy and hold her until he could get there. Amy was scared and grabbed the knife to protect herself -- and stabbed the man when he tried to subdue her. Mike arrived too late -- and panicked and fled when he discovered Price's body. Bottom line: Amy couldn't stand to be beaten again. "I killed a man," Amy signs. Bones is in tears by the end of the story.Bones then tells Amy they believe she was kidnapped when she was three -- and Mike and Denise aren't her real parents. "So who am I?" Amy asks through signing. Replies Bones: "We will find out -- together." Later, Bones relates her own sad story of holding onto pleasant memories while in foster care. Amy is inspired -- and says she only remembers a stuffed bunny. It's not much to go on. "This might seem like a strange request, but I would like permission to have one of your wisdom teeth pulled," Bones says. Why? The isotopes in the tooth could reveal her origins. Amy agrees. Cue MONTAGE of Bones examining the tooth with the help of Arastoo ... pinpointing the San Fernando Valley ... and then a missing children's photo of Amy surfacing. Bingo. So Amy's real parents have been located. We then cut to about-to-be parents Angela and Hodgins, who are exiting the hospital with no baby. "This is why nature invented false labor," Hodgins says. "We needed a dry run ... next time I'll be fine. I'll be your rock." The episode ends with a tearful reunion between Amy -- real name Samantha -- and her weeping Mom (Julie Wittner) and Dad (Matt Miller), who produce a stuffed bunny. Tears all around.
