The group decides to begin "auditioning" for a replacement to round out their group, and eventually settle on a smooth-jiving black man named Jerome. Peter hits it off with Jerome, until learning that Lois dated Jerome 20 years earlier. To Peter, it could just have well have been yesterday, and he soon develops an angry, jealous fit over the thought that a black man - let alone anyone - once had a relationship with Lois, and he demands an end to the friendship, Lois of course refusing. One night, a drunken Peter, fuming over Jerome, throws a beer bottle through the window of his house, knocking over a lamp and sparking a fire that destroys his house. The next morning, Peter learns that Lois invited Jerome to stay with the family until he can find a new place to live. Peter is unable to contain his jealousy, and after a series of pratfalls - including Jerome using "alternate methods" to save Lois from choking when the Heimlich doesn't work; and later, Peter wearing a KKK outfit and carrying a flaming torch - he eventually kicks Jerome out. That night, Lois tells Peter that she is disgusted with him, and shows him a present that Jerome bought him in gratitude for their friendship and giving him a temporary place to live. Peter realizes that he nearly ruined a promising friendship and goes to the Drunken Clam to apologize; Jerome accepts the apology. In the subplot, Brian seeks to find out why Quagmire acts so coolly distant with him. After several attempts to start a friendship with Quagmire fail, Quagmire speaks his mind about Brian, telling him - in essence - that he thinks he is a phony, pretentious, hypocritical, judgmental and vain individual. Brian is deeply hurt by all this, but Stewie (of all people) soothes Brian over, basically telling him that he doesn't need Quagmire.

Peter is bored at work one day and decides to use the "executive bathroom." When he learns the lavish washroom is reserved only for company executives, Peter decides to do well at work so he can get an executive's job when it opens up. In the process, he accidentally blows up a children's hospital, killing everyone inside. Still, Angela is impressed enough to recommend him for an opening ... until the human resources department points out that Peter never completed the third grade. Peter decides to go back to elementary school, where he continually acts like a buffoon and insults the teacher and his classmates. Later, despite his poor academic skills, he is picked to participate in the school spelling bee. After doing badly, he spells "lesbians" correctly (after the class brain falters) and is allowed to pass. Alas, when he returns to the brewery, there is no job waiting for Peter ... only an arrest warrant for blowing up the children's hospital. Peter is sent to prison ... but only until 9 p.m. the next Sunday (the regularly scheduled time for "Family Guy"). Meanwhile, Frank Sinatra Jr. returns to town for an engagement with Brian at the Quahog Cabana Club, but it is clear that nobody is into big band and swing music anymore. Frank and Brian buy the club and, on Stewie's recommendation, renovate it into a trendy nightclub called pLace. The club does very well, and the more conservative Frank and Brian even become accustomed to the nightlife ... that is, until Andy Dick arrives and runs everyone off!

The Griffins visit a 50s-style diner, where the wait staff dress as celebrities from that decade. Peter hears his favorite song, "Surfin' Bird" by the Trashmen, on the jukebox and begins dancing and acting stupid. When one of the employees removes the record from the jukebox - the song came out in late 1963, nearly four years after the end of the 1950s decade - Peter buys the record, takes it home and plays it endlessly. He winds up driving everyone crazy with his obsessive fixation on the song; Chris is driven to the brink, while Lois is appalled when she gets a call from the bank stating that Peter had withdrawn most of their savings account (to produce an insipid public service announcement built around "Surfin' Bird"). Eventually, Brian and Stewie decide they need to take action and, in the middle of the night, team up to steal the record. The next morning, Peter realizes the record is missing and sets out to buy another copy, only to find that "a dog and a baby" have already scoured Quahog's used record stores and bought every last copy of "Surfin' Bird" (to destroy them). Initially, Peter is upset at his inability to buy a new copy, but then settles down and realizes the clerk at one of the stores looks familiar ... namely, like Jesus Christ. The clerk initially denies this claim, but then admits he is the Messiah. Jesus tells Peter he comes to Earth every century or so to unwind but that he must remain incognito. That doesn't discourage Peter, who invites him over to dinner. The Griffins immediately recognize who their visitor is, and Jesus decides he needs to make his identity public. When Jesus walks on the water surface of a fountain to retrieve a dollar bill Peter had lost, everyone is amazed, and Jesus becomes a celebrity at once. Eventually, Jesus becomes obsessed with his fame and neglects his relationship with Peter. But when Jesus gets arrested, it is Peter who bails him out. Jesus muses that he wasn't ready to return to Earth and decides to leave, but Peter reassures him that someday he will be ready. Just before Jesus departs the Earth, he gives Peter a present: a new copy of "Surfin' Bird."

Peter and Lois upset Meg when they forget that her 17th birthday is a few days away. They hastily plan a birthday party that Meg complains she won't want to be seen at. Peter gets drunk and makes a fool out of himself. Eventually, he dresses up as a hobo clown and attempts to drive a unicycle down a set of stairs, but he is unable to control the unicycle and falls over the banister, landing on top of his father Francis, one of the party guests. Francis is critically injured with multiple injuries; with the family surrounding him, he briefly awakens to tell Peter "You're a fat, stinking drunk!" Francis dies immediately thereafter. Peter is depressed over his father's death and attempts to turn to crack. Eventually, Brian refers Peter to a hypnotherapist, who gets Peter to reveal that Francis is not his biological father. Peter visits Thelma, who admits that he was conceived while she had an affair with an Irishman 40 years earlier and that he (the father) has remained in Ireland. Brian and Peter travel to Ireland in an attempt to find Peter's real father, and do when they encounter a man named Mickey McFinnigan, the town drunk. Mickey refuses at first to believe they are biologically father and son, but Peter challenges Mickey to engage in a beer drinking contest to persuade him otherwise. Peter wins the duel, and Mickey realizes that he must be his son "because only a member of my family could beat me at drinking." The two celebrate their newfound relationship. In the subplot, Lois disciplines Stewie when he persists in his highly possessive misbehavior. But rather than get the hint, Stewie discovers that he is sadomasochist and - after realizing that Lois is being apologetic for her actions - deliberately misbehaves so that his mother can hit him again and again. He eventually decides that his demands are too creepy and stops.

So Peter gets the idea to start his own cable network dedicated to all of the "smut" television once offered. Lois, naturally being uncomfortable with this contacts the FCC who then shuts Peter down. Feeling that shutting him down is not enough the FCC then decides to begin censoring life.

After several months the guys get rescued, but when Peter comes home he discovers that Lois has gotten remarried with Brian.
