The Burning Beekeeper
Since Marshall had been busy with...
more
Since Marshall had been busy with work, a stressed Lily singlehandedly planned their housewarming party, and was worried that it was going to be a disaster. Her premonition came true. Over a five minute period during the party, a series of events that took place simultaneously in the living room, dining room and kitchen resulted in what to the untrained eye looked like a confusing mess if knowledge of only what was happening in one of those three rooms was known, but made total sense when viewed from all three rooms combined. Some of the issues and topics of conversation that led to the disaster included Robin's confrontational nature versus Ted's non-confrontational nature, Marshall pondering whether he should refuse boss Garrison Cootes' demand that they return to work in the middle of the party, Mickey's new beekeeping hobby, what happened to a plate of vegan spring rolls, why Lily didn't want anyone to eat the block of Gouda that Marshall served, and Barney's even more than usual adoration of his penis.

more
Lily and Marshall have now officially moved to Long Island, which brings about many issues. For Lily and Marshall, they receive an unexpected and somewhat unwanted house guest: Mickey. Mickey, who grew up in that house, believes he is helping Lily and Marshall by pointing out what they can and cannot do with every aspect of the house. Lily/Marshall and Mickey come to a stalemate when they negotiate Mickey's living arrangement versus his help in fixing the broken fuse which has resulted in the house being in total darkness. At MacLaren's, Ted, Barney and Robin are lamenting the empty half a booth where Lily and Marshall generally sat, and which will now be emptier than usual. However, Barney comes to the realization that Lily was generally the boss of their group, and thus now he plans on taking over. That leads to an evening which has them finding unexpected surrogates for Lily and Marshall. And Robin and Kevin are still at the stage in their relationship where they want to prove to the other that they are up for doing almost anything, even if they're not.

more
On January 1, 2012, Marshall heads back to St. Cloud, Minnesota to spend the day alone with his father to keep on with a tradition between the two: hold a tailgate party while watching the Vikings/Bears game. Marshall resists any change to what he sees as that tradition, which may not be easy due to the activity happening around him. Regardless, Marshall has come to tell his father of the exploits of his and Lily's and their friends' New Year's Eve celebrations. Marshall and Lily discussed whether or not they should tell Lily's father about her pregnancy. Lily had up to this point resisted the idea of telling him if only not wanting to be disappointed by him yet again. Kevin tried to convince Robin that she should try and get a job working in front of the camera once again. Their New Year's Eve celebration alone together took an unexpected turn when Robin got a telephone call from an inebriated on-air Sandy Rivers, who needed her help with his New Year's Eve live national broadcast. Robin's help extended a little further than she expected. And Ted and Barney had troubles trying to get into crowded MacLaren's due to bouncer Doug's strict entrance policy. As such, Ted and Barney, with help from a then dateless for the evening Kevin, decided to open Puzzles, their own bar in Ted and Robin's apartment.

more
Child-hating Robin is dismayed at being pregnant, but is mildly surprised at Barney's reaction when she tells him that he's the father. Beyond how this situation will affect Robin's relationship with Kevin, they both go through a roller coaster of emotions about being potential parents based on encounters with other people, Barney's with his old pre-Ted wing man, Insane Duane, and Robin's with Lily's gynecologist Dr. Sonya, who provides her with some additional news about her situation. Ted, who can tell that something is bothering Robin, tries, against her wishes, to cheer her up without knowing the entire situation. Meanwhile, Marshall is determined to have the best Christmas light display ever in the tri-state area. He gets a taste of what it's going to be like to be a father when he gets help putting up the display from a neighborhood teenager named Scott.

more
Ted and Barney, while in a drunken state of mind, decide to adopt a child as bros. Deciding at first to wait till they sober up, they still decide to proceed. An argument ensues and Barney storms out. Ted apologizes the next day, when Barney arrives with a child named "Hurricane Mosby-Stinson".
After Marshall and Lily return to their apartment, they decide their apartment is no longer as big when they first left and decide to move to their given home in Long Island. Robin, shocked, puts in an effort to persuade them not to, reminding them of a time when Marshall almost purchased an abandoned firehouse and become a Ghostbuster. When they arrive at the house to prepare for Thanksgiving, Robin locks herself in their bathroom and refuses to leave until they change their minds. Barney and Ted arrive, with the baby and Lily is shocked. She manages to convince Ted (who began to relish the idea) that this wasn't a good idea. Barney's brother James and his partner arrive, and the child is revealed to be their daughter Sadie. James tells Ted he almost did the same thing with a female friend, but once they met their partners, they were glad they didn't go through with it. Ted informs Barney he no longer wishes to adopt and Barney leaves for a walk. He goes to the bathroom window to talk to Robin, who informs him she's pregnant.

more
The theme is the passage of time. It goes really fast, and can grind to a halt in a moment. Robin is in a panic after a rush of kissing and then having sex with Barney, feeling bad that she cheated on Kevin. Barney then realizes he cheated on Nora. They wonder if it means anything. They go back and forth over whether each of them wanted it to mean anything. Robin says it was a "horrible mistake" and they have to act like it never happened. They have a work cruise coming up, but Robin says they should all go. "It's a three-hour boat ride, what could happen?" Barney makes the obvious Gilligan reference.Ted has tickets to "Groove-a-palooza," and he scored a bag of mari-(revising for the sake of the kids)nated steak sandwiches. Lily says they should pass on the "sandwiches," and Marshall agrees -- then whispers to Ted that he'd better get his $60 back. Ted says they've had "sandwiches" at every "palooza."They get to the concert and before Lily gets to their seats and fire up the "sandwiches."Robin is anxious on the work cruise because she's going to be trapped on a boat with the boyfriend she cheated on, the guy she cheated with and the girlfriend of the guy she cheated with. Barney suggests they could start a new life together. Robin wonders if that's what he really wants.Marshall thinks he "sandwich" was laced with something else, because he's not paranoid. And he's worried about why he's not paranoid. When Lily gets to the seats, Marshall is convinced she knows about the "sandwiches."Back on the boat, Barney is a stumbling, nervous wreck while chatting with Nora and Kevin. Kevin thinks Barney is nervous because he's going to meet Nora's parents the next day.At the concert, Marshall slyly leans over and says, "Lily has no idea I'm high." Only, he said it to Lily. Now that she knows and can't partake, she wants nachos. And thus begins the most harrowing journey of Marshall and Ted's lives.Back on the boat, Barney and Robin are hearing the band's singer's lyrics differently from everyone else -- and they're all about how they need to come clean about cheating. At the concert, Marshall and Ted are having trouble finding the nachos. They think they've walked all the way around the arena and been gone for an hour. Marshall has a quick flash of Lily eating another guy's nachos and making out with him. They've stood in the women's restroom line, thinking they were waiting for nachos. And that's where they end up again.Back on the boat, Sandy Rivers insults an intern by asking her to have sex with him on the boat's deck and when she tries to throw her jalapeno-infused vodka at him, he ducks and it hits Kevin in the face. He falls over and Robin reports that he might have a concussion, so she couldn't tell Kevin. Barney says something "even worse" happened to Nora. She spilled a dot of red wine on her sleeve, so he didn't want to "pile on."Marshall and Ted wander again, and again end up in the women's restroom line.On the boat, Robin says she wishes last night hadn't happened, but Barney says he doesn't. He wonders whether it's not a mistake, but the story of how they got back together. He says it's what they both want, but Robin says they tried and failed. He says he hasn't stopped thinking about her and she hasn't stopped thinking about him. After Robin says she's "such a mess," Barney says he might like her so much because she's almost as messed up as he is. They agree to do what they have to do -- break up with their significant others -- and meet at McLaren's to talk about their future together. At the concert, Ted wants to go back to the seats after thinking they've walked around the arena yet again. He tells Marshall that if he continues to worry about things like nachos, he's going to give himself a heart attack. Ted goes back to his seat and Marshall goes back to the women's restroom line, again thinking it's the line for nachos. After the boat cruise, Robin is with Kevin at the hospital when she starts to tell him they need to break up. He wants to say something first, though. He tells her he loves her.At Nora's place, her parents have arrived early. We now see Robin and Barney in a split screen, both of them saying, "Should've done it on the boat."Ted runs into a creepy guitar-player who's been freaking him and Marshall out all night, and the guy hands Ted some nachos. Ted thinks it's a sign, and goes looking for Marshall. At Nora's place, her father is so glad to see Nora and Barney so happy. He starts talking about how you just "know" when you've found your soulmate. You can't stop thinking about them, he says, and you're great friends, and you can't wait to spend the rest of your life with them. Barney flashes through memories of times with Robin as Nora's dad speaks. When Nora's dad gets up to run to the kitchen, Barney tells Nora he has something to tell her.At the concert, Marshall sees the guitar guy, who has a heart attack. Marshall thinks it's a sign and goes looking for Ted. They find each other immediately and head back to their seats, but as the crowd cheers, they think they've missed the whole show.Kevin's "I love you" is still hanging out there, and Robin tells him there's something she has to tell him.Back at Nora's place, Barney drops the bomb: "I cheated on you." Nora is stunned. Barney apologizes and she asks if it was a one-time thing. She asks if he can tell her it didn't mean anything, and Barney says no.Marshall and Ted are sitting on the ground in the concourse, where Marshall says he still wants to have fun, but feels like he has to be a good dad. Lily comes out and finds them, and they apologize for having missed the whole show and ruined the night. She says they've been gone less than two minutes, and we see through a surveillance camera that, indeed, all of the events of their night happened over the course of about two minutes. Creepy guitar guy was a cardboard cutout advertising another concert, and the nachos Ted got from him had actually come out of a trash can. The heart attack Marshall saw the guitar man have was actually Ted knocking over the cut-out after getting the nachos. They're relieved that time isn't actually passing as quickly as they thought. At the bar, Marshall, Lily and Ted find Barney, who tells them he and Nora broke up. He says he thinks the worst part is over. Then Robin walks in and Barney half-smiles. Then he sees Kevin walk in behind her.We flash back to the hospital room, where Robin told Kevin there was something she had to tell him. He says that just because something has to be told doesn't mean it has to be heard. She says she did something bad, and he says that everyone does bad things but it doesn't mean they're bad people. He says he doesn't care about every detail from her past. He say she cares about her, and that from this night forward she's in this for good. He tells her he hopes she'll one day she'll see herself the way he sees her. She says that's a pretty good answer.Old Ted tells us that sometimes a single second can last a lifetime. For Barney, a second that would never end was when Robin looked back at him at the bar and just slightly shook her head. Barney pauses, then says he's going home. "Tough night," he says. Robin tells him she's sorry.Ted sits in the wrong booth and realizes he should go home. In the apartment, he notices Barney in Robin's room, picking up rose petals and blowing out candles.

more
A question by Kevin about the origins of a "No Boogie-boarding" sign outside MacLaren's makes the gang reminisce about Hurricane Irene which hit New York in the summer of 2011 and which was the impetus to the incident that prompted the sign to be erected. Safety conscious Ted wanted to leave the city before the approaching hurricane. While Barney, Lily and Robin thought that Ted was overreacting, Marshall, who was between jobs and had just lost his medical insurance until his new job started in two weeks, was suffering from hypochondria and wanted to leave. But telephone calls from various parents, news of the strength of the hurricane as it got closer and closer to New York, and interpersonal relationships between the five at that time made them continually change their individual minds about whether to go or stay. Meanwhile, Barney is at a point of doing whatever he can to get out of wearing the ducky tie. He thinks he has a way to convince Marshall to let him get out of wearing the tie. As Marshall ponders Barney's deal, Kevin adds his therapist two-cents into the matter.

more
The five friends are having dinner at Shinjitsu, a Japanese teppanyaki. It's Marshall's favorite restaurant, while Barney hates it there. Two topics of conversation emerge for the evening. The first is if Barney can perform a prescribed series of teppanyaki chef moves, which ends up being a bet between Barney and Marshall/Lily. If Barney wins the bet, he can touch Lily's now emerged ample pregnancy breasts. If Barney loses the bet, he has to wear Marshall's rubber ducky emblazoned tie for one year, the tie which he thinks is hideous. After they make the bet, Marshall and Lily have to figure out if Barney is hustling them - as it begins to look like Barney maneuvered their way to the restaurant without initially looking like he did - since Barney winning the bet could perhaps be their worst nightmare. The second is Ted's recent encounter with ex-girlfriend Victoria, who was the dessert caterer at the architect's ball. Their meeting ignited old feelings between the two, some good and some not so good. In the latter category is the fact that Ted officially cheated on her with Robin. During their meeting, Victoria made a few admissions of her own which may dictate if there is a future for the two of them.

Immediately after his drunken spree at Punchy's wedding, Marshall learns that he is one step away from landing his dream job working in environmental lawyer Garrison Cootes' law firm. That last step is for them to do a background check to make sure that there are no unseemly skeletons in his closet. Feeling that that drunken spree may have cost him the job and thus vowing never to get drunk again, Marshall does his own Internet search to find any of those skeletons. He finds one video, posted by a college colleague named Peter Durkenson, of Marshall doing a supposed fraternity prank called Beercules. Believing that video could cost him his dream job, Marshall tries to track down Peter to get him to remove the video. Finding a seemingly still immature Peter may get Marshall into even more trouble. Meanwhile, Nora finally agrees to meet with Barney, who tries to do whatever he can to make her believe he's a changed man, even if it takes a marathon in an all-night diner. And Ted decides to start dating again, using his cover story in New York magazine as a come-on to pick-up women. He manages to land two women who are potential girlfriend candidates. The Best Man
Old Ted reminds us and the kids that...
more
Old Ted reminds us and the kids that there's one theme to the story: timing. "Timing is everything." He says he wouldn't have ever met their mother if it weren't for a wedding -- the one wedding he thought he'd never attend: Barney's.Barney's having some pre-wedding jitters and Ted is trying to talk him through them. Barney claims he isn't having jitters, he's just asking Ted about his tie selection because he's worried he's going to be stuck wearing the same time for the rest of his life. Barney then confides in Ted that he's not really talking about the tie. Barney's also worried this will be the worst wedding ever, but then they remember that the worst wedding ever was Punchy's. "Marshall really took a two-flusher on that one," Ted recalls. The story starts in September 2011, when Punchy asked Ted to be his best man. Ted was working on his toast -- and the ones he's done in the past have not gone well. We see proof of those, and Punchy posted one of them online -- and it was remixed. It's wildly popular in Finland.Ted worries he has to nail the toast. Barney then reminds Ted about his New York magazine cover, in which he's labeled "New York's next great architect?"Ted insists he isn't going to Punchy's wedding to brag about his magazine cover. This somehow leads to Robin asking Barney if he called Nora. She really wants to know, but is trying to play it cool. Barney says he didn't, but insists he didn't "chicken out," because Nora is looking for something serious and he isn't. Robin is about to get a round of drinks, but Marshall and Lily stop her. They've decided not to tell anyone Lily's pregnant until they hit the three-month mark. They go to the bar to order four beers and one non-alcoholic brew, and Karl immediately knows Lily's pregnant. At Punchy's wedding in Cleveland, Barney is trying out various methods of picking up women -- calling it "test marketing," while Lily and Marshall try to figure out how to deal with Lily's inability to drink. They decide Marshall will covertly drink all of Lily's shots -- of which there are many. Elsewhere, Lily realized Robin still has feelings for Barney when she uses her "truth voice" -- the voice Robin uses to act like she doesn't care about something when she totally does care.Punchy and friend tell Ted they're looking forward to his toast, expecting a meltdown. Ted can't believe Punchy's rooting for a meltdown at his own wedding and Punchy tells him "everyone is" -- including a few new friends from Finland. Ted looks over and a table full of Finlanders wave and snap photos.Lily talks to Robin about how she can tell Barney still has feelings for him, too. Lily also slips up and says, "now that I'm pregnant -- with this idea in my mind, uterus" she sees things even clearer. Robin doesn't seem to notice. Lily then tells her she's the reason Barney hasn't called Nora, the reason he's only "test marketing" at the wedding and she's the reason he keeps striking out on purpose.Meanwhile, drunk Marshall is trying to pump up Ted to his friends by showing off Ted's magazine cover. Then Marshall gets distracted by babies at the wedding and oohs and ahhs at how cute they are.Lily convinces Robin to tell Barney how she feels. She goes to do this, and before she can say anything to Barney, he sas he knows she wants to dance. And they dance to "Groove Is in the Heart." It's all a rockin' good time until they're done and Robin is kissing distance from Barney's face and starts to tell him what she wanted to say. That's when Barney's phone rings. It's Nora.Barney then admits he did call Nora, "like five times." He asks Robin to stay and help him through his conversation with Nora. She does. She gives him the words to tell Nora: "I know we didn't work out the first time. And I know it doesn't make any sense. But I can't shake the feeling that we belongs together. Is there any part of you that wants to try again?" We see in Robin's face that those are her words to Barney, but it works with Nora and Barney excitedly gives Robin a thumbs up and thanks her.Marshall shows Lily one of the cute babies and it's so darn cute -- "this son of a bitch has knee dimples," she says -- they decide to go tell everybody she's pregnant.Outside, Ted and Robin smoke cigars and talk. Ted's sad that all his friends are there with their wives and kids and he's stuck there was a magazine. She tries to tell him he's been focused on work, but he thinks it's because he's "stopped believing" he's going to find "the one." She tells him to start believing again -- in chemistry. She tells him if he has chemistry he only needs one other thing: timing. He asks if their deal still stands -- that if they're both still single at 40...Robin agrees, then asks Ted whether architects make big money. "Aggressively medium money," he says. Robin's not pleased. She asks him to start believing again, and tells him not to cry during the toast. Lily then announces to the group -- just as Ted's about to give his toast -- that they're having a baby.Ted cries when he says during his toast that they're there to celebrate love, which "brings us new life." One of Ted's friends starts to make fun of him, and that's when drunk Marshall ruins the wedding by standing up and defending Ted. He says Ted is crying tears of joy because "that beautiful lady is pregnant," as he points in Lily's direction. Only, Punchy's bride is sitting behind Lily and shouts, "How did you know that?" This provokes a massive argument between Punchy's dad and Punchy's wife's dad.Back at Barney's wedding, Barney asks Ted to assure him he "picked the right tie." And Ted does, adding, "Just be glad it wasn't the ducky tie." Then Old Ted tells us that "the ducky tie" is another story for another time, adding, "Man we aren't even close to the end!"Barney tells Ted he's a good best man, then tells Ted he's totally going to cry during the toast.Lily comes in and tells Ted the bride wants to see him. When Ted leaves, Lily looks at Barney and asks, "Really, you're going to go with that tie?"

more
We open on Barney's farewell with his dad (John Lithgow), who he thought was his Uncle Jerry, as his dad left for good in 1983. Jerry tells Barney to keep practicing his magic and remember that a magician's best friend is a drunk audience. He "hides" a button with a picture of the two of them at "Legalize It-Fest 1983" behind little Barney's ear, "so that I'll know you won't forget me." Jerry's last words to Barney: "Never stop partying." Then we move to Barney's walking out on his dad in 2011.Barney shows up at Ted's apartment, upset that his dad called and invited him to go fishing while admitting that his former self was "bad news." He says he's too old to be partying like he used to. Barney is upset that his dad is "anti-awesome-etic." He decides he's going bring Crazy Jerry back by showing him "the awesomest night of all time."He invites his friends to join them, but reveals that he's made minor improvements to their personalities. Robin is now a "professional Scotch taster." Lily and Marshall are now in an open marriage, and Marshall is a "gin-swilling, womanizing playwright." Barney hands Ted a giant pile of topics he should avoid talking about. FInally, Barney declares that Robin is dating Ted, because his dad will encourage him to marry any single woman friend.Jerry shows up and Barney decides to break the real news: they're also in a band. As they attempt to decide which club to hit, it devolves into a new take on the "Who's on First?" skit. They finally end up at a club called "Hopeless," after all their other options were exhausted. There, Robin sees her secret crush (Michael Trucco), a guy she ran into at a department store once, where she insulted his shirt. As she goes to chat the guy up, Ted interrupts and introduces himself as her boyfriend.Barney tells his dad he's disappointed that he isn't partying the way he'd hoped. He says he wants to hang out with Crazy Jerry. So Jerry decides to take four shots that are sitting on the table. We next see Crazy Jerry with his tie around his head, dancing around the club. Crazy Jerry then proposes they take the party out to the crazy streets of New York. Marshall and Lily, meanwhile, have decided to challenge each other over how successful they'd each be if they were really in an open marriage. They bet to see who can get five phone numbers first. Regardless of the winner, they'll have sex in the bathroom. After Barney and Jerry leave, Robin asks Ted to help her convince her secret crush that they aren't actually together. She tells him she first met the guy at a store clearance sale and Ted remembers being there -- it's where he bought his red cowboy boots. They were still dating then. He remembers because they had great sex last night. Then he remembers his shirt was covering her face, which must have meant she was picturing the secret crush guy. So, he asks her to confirm that the great sex had nothing to with the boots. When she says, Ted shouts, "Did you hear that, everyone? She said yes!" and says they're getting married. We see her secret crush leave.Barney and Jerry are smashed and Barney's ability to remember the night is getting fuzzy -- until they get arrested when Jerry pukes on the hood of a police car. As they're sitting on the curb in handcuffs, Jerry says, "Too bad your playwright friend isn't a lawyer."Barney still thinks the night has been "awesome." Jerry then admits he isn't drunk at all. He's been faking it all night, using sleight of hand to fake taking the shots and otherwise tricking Barney into thinking all the things he thought were happening were more real than they were. He reminds Barney about what he told him as a kid: That a magician's best friend is a drunk audience.Jerry says he thought that if he showed Barney what "never stopping partying" really looks like, he'd learn that he can never do it forever. Barney gets all warm and fuzzy when he realizes Jerry lied to him all night for his own selfish reasons -- as a dad would do. Jerry then figures he isn't going to make it home in time for his fishing trip with his other son, so he and Barney breaking out of their handcuffs and run for it.Robin is getting congratulated at the bar when she clears up the rest of the conversation, reminding Ted why he bought the red boots in the first place. He was making fun of them when the cute blonde saleslady told him he'd look hot in them. He asked for them in a size 11.After failing to find a cab to get Jerry home, he decides to force one of his driving students -- an elderly woman -- to drive him home, which she does very nervously.Lily won the phone-number race, and she and Marshall had sex in the bathroom. "I won that race," Marshall says. They all walk home and Lily tells Robin she's sorry her secret crush guy didn't work out. Robin says it probably wasn't meant to be. Jus as Robin walks up her steps, we see the same guy walking down her street, talking on his cell phone & telling someone he just saw his secret crush. Old Ted tells us that wasn't the end of their story -- but more on that later. As they drive, and it's now morning, Barney asks his dad how he became who he is. Barney says he loves his life, but he isn't sure he likes loving it. Barney worries that he's too far gone. He tells Barney he has to meet the right girl. He says, "Maybe you'll meet her tomorrow." Barney wonders aloud, "Maybe I've met her already."He then leans back to Barney, who's sitting in the back seat, and thanks him for taking care of the button he'd tucked behind Barney's ear in 1983, pulling it out. Barney's impressed as he watches his dad go into his house and give his other son a kiss when he arrives. Barney decides, "I'm going fishin' with my dad."We next see Barney, JJ and Jerry sitting in a fishing boat in the middle of a lake in complete silence.Barney takes a deep breath and announces, "This ...," pausing for a while before adding, "... sucks!"

Despite Zoey still opposing the new GNB headquarters being built on the Arcadian Hotel site, Ted and Zoey's personal relationship is thriving. That issue is only one of the many disagreements in their life, which Ted likens to the two challenging each other mentally. On the other hand, he sees Marshall and Lily's relationship as being boring, as they agree on everything to the point of them almost melding into one person. Lily and Marshall, on the other hand, see their relationship as being supportive, the way that relationships should be, whereas they see Ted and Zoey's relationship as being too much work to the point of being mentally exhausting. But Marshall quitting his job at GNB to work in a non-paying volunteer position at the NRDC and Zoey managing to get the Landmark Preservation Society to agree to a hearing over the GNB project may change everything on both sides. Meanwhile, Barney seems to be taking Marshall leaving GNB the hardest. He admits to Robin that his anger regarding Marshall's departure has to do with a meatball sub.

Desperation Day
It's approaching Valentine's Day...
more
It's approaching Valentine's Day 2011, and romance is not looking good for most of the gang. Robin and Barney have a laser tag date as friends on the actual day. Robin, single and proud of it, is spending the day before Valentine's Day with some single girlfriends in protest of the Hallmark day. Barney has renamed the 13th Desperation Day for all the single, desperate women who feel the need to hook-up with anyone by the end of the day so as not to be alone on the 14th. In his protest against this desperation, he vows to be home by midnight alone so that he say he doesn't have a date on Valentine's. Even Lily and Marshall are going to be apart on Valentine's as Marshall is still in Minnesota helping his mother after the passing of his father. Lily decides she needs to be with Marshall so makes an impromptu trip to Minnesota to be with her husband. What Lily sees at the Eriksen household is not quite what she expects. And Ted and Zoey have decided to take their relationship at a glacier's pace to give Zoey time to get over being divorced. But when their relationship goes from zero to sixty at the flick of a switch (really, at the sight of an overnight bag), Ted needs to decide at what speed he wants to go with Zoey if at all.

more
Marshall has stayed in Minnesota to help his mother following his father's funeral. Individually, all the gang telephone Marshall to relate a story to him regarding Ted. What they can all agree on in the story telling is that their new friend Zoey agreed to set Ted up with her cousin, who shall be called "Honey" (as that's the only name Ted can remember of her as he relates the story to his children in 2030, "Honey" only a pet name they all used to describe the type of person she was), the most gullible person in the world. By the end of the evening, Ted did not go home with her. His reason: he's in love with married Zoey. Ted never wants to see Zoey again which places the others in a bind as they've come to really like Zoey and don't want to lose her as a friend. But as Marshall gets more and more information from the others in the group about what is going on with Ted and Zoey, he is the only one who is able to see the entire picture. So from Minnesota, Marshall has to fix the problems in New York since no one else can with what limited information they have.

Blitzgiving
Hosting his first Thanksgiving, Ted...
more
Hosting his first Thanksgiving, Ted wants to make it memorable by stuffing a turkey with another turkey, calling it a "tur-tur-key-key." Ted gets up to leave, but Barney tells him not to leave because desperate ladies who'd had a fight with their mom could be coming into the bar. Marshall also tells Ted he doesn't want to bail early, because he could become "The Blitz.""The Blitz" (Jorge Garcia) was their friend who was cursed because back in college every time he left a place early, something amazing happened. Ted says he doesn't think the curse of The Blitz is real. The next morning, Ted wakes up to see the apartment trashed, Robin's face painted like Paul Stanley and Barney and Marshall singing and quoting "The Gentlemen." Ted doesn't know what any of this means. Then, he finds Zoey asleep in the bathtub. She wakes up and says, "Hi, Blitz."Zoey leaves, again referencing, "The Gentlemen." Lily explains that after Ted "Blitzed out," Zoey walked into the bar. They thought of ways to mess with her, but when Lily went to confront Zoey, she recognized Lily as the painter whose paintings she bought online. So they all ended up partying together, and they saw a skateboarding dog. They started playing "Truth or Dare," and Zoey challenged Marshall to text a picture of his junk to a stranger, which he did.She then asked anyone to shout out random numbers, and The Blitz (Jorge Garcia) appeared, shouting, "4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 ." These, of course, are Hurley's lottery winning and possibly cursed numbers on Lost, which also turned up on hatches and just about everywhere. That's the number she dialed. Ted was shocked that The Blitz was there, but Marshall tells Ted that when he left he "changed the course of Blitz-tory." The Blitz curse was passed from The Blitz to Ted. The Blitz then announces, "My name's not Blitz, my name is Steve!" THen he hugs Ted and says, "Thank you, Blitz."Ted is still mad that everyone befriended his worst enemy. He reminds Lily of how many people he's hated for her. Still, he has a tur-tur-key-key to make. He goes to preheat the oven, but it's broken because Robin danced on its open door the night before. They also used up all of Ted's butter greasing up Lily so they could see how far they could slide her down the hall. She reached 4G.The gang sets out to find another oven. Barney's isn't real, Marshall and Lily's place stinks because there was an explosion at the sewage treatment plant, and Steve keeps his cat litter box in his oven. Lily says there's one more option: Zoey invited them to her house for Thanksgiving because her husband spends Thanksgiving with his daughter Hannah, and she even invited Ted. He refuses. They realize that Barney, who was having trouble breathing in the crowded cab, has left and taken his own cab. He's telling the cab driver the story of how Ted became The Blitz and the cabbie suggests to Barney that he's now The Blitz because he left the group. He tells him to step on it.When the gang arrives at Zoey's building, they tell Barney he just missed an amazing event, where they became part of the Thanksgiving Day parade and Ted sang "Twist and Shout" on one of the floats. Ted confirms for Barney that he is now, in fact, The Blitz.Zoey answers there door as she and Ted share an icy intro. Marshall is alarmed when he gets a text from the number he'd texted the picture of his junk to. It's a return "wang," and Lily calls it a "Boomer-wang."Barney has to leave the room, but he's worried he'll miss something. Steve assures him he can leave the room, he just can't leave the building. Barney walks into the kitchen and Steve decided to test the theory by flipping a quarter onto the coffee table, and it stands perfectly on one edge. Barney missed it. Steve apologizes for duping Barney, but says he wants to see cool things."I was on that island for what seems like eternity," Steve says (keep in mind, this is Jorge Garcia, who played Hurley on "Lost"). "I want to enjoy things on the other side."Ted and Zoey face off and trade insults, and Ted tells the group she'll never be friends with her. Robin texts "Wang Guy" to ask him if enemies can become friends. Wang Guy responds by saying yes and quoting Ghandi, "Be the change you want to see in the world."Ted heads for the kitchen and accidentally bumps into Zoey, spilling cranberry sauce all over her white sweater. Ted refers to Zoey as Cinderella's evil stepmother. Zoey gets mad and kicks them all out. They leave, but realize that Barney isn't with them.We see Barney sitting, dejected, on Zoey's couch, and she doesn't notice him while she walks behind the couch and takes her sweater off. Barney doesn't see this, either. In the cab on the way home, Lily reveals something she stole from Zoey's house, a gift to Hannah from Zoey. Ted then remembers references Zoey made to her husband's daughter and feels bad about his "evil stepmother" comment. He tells them they have to go back. They're all sitting at Zoey's table when she emerges from a room with a new sweater on. Barney let them in, and she reveals that she was walking around half-naked, which Barney missed.Ted tells Zoey he's sorry her stepdaughter didn't want to spend Thanksgiving with her. She admits that Hannah hates her guts. Ted tells Zoey that she might get to spend the next Thanksgiving with Hannah because "people don't stay enemies forever." He tells the kids that's how he and Zoey became friends. Before they eat, they decide to send a group picture to Wang Guy.Steve gets up light some candles, and just ask Barney looks away, Steve tips over some books on the mantle, which has a domino effect, knocking over a few more things until a decorative ball falls off the edge of the mantle and hits a cane, which flips a top hat into the air and right into the tur-tur-key-key."The gentlemen!" everyone shouts. Barney missed it.At the end of the night, Barney and Steve head toward the elevator, but Steve turns around because he forgot his jacket. Barney gets inside and he's followed by an attractive woman in an evening gown. Her dress gets stuck in the elevator doors as they close and we hear it tear, Barney shouts, "Thank you, God!" And Steve is left, saying, "Aww, man!"

Unfinished
Old Ted starts the night by telling...
more
Old Ted starts the night by telling the kids (and us) that all he ever wanted to do while he was teaching college architecture was change someone's life with one of his lectures. Cut to him giving a lecture about an architect whose greatest work was left "unifinished" (given that this is the title of the episode, we'll assume it's important). But first, rewind to a few days earlier, where Ted blows Barney off when presented with an opportunity to talk to some ladies (a hot one, a sort of hot one, and one who's likely "really, really funny"). Barney attempts to go woo them himself, saying he'll have a three-way "with hot and sort of hot, while giggles runs the camera." Robin then starts telling the gang that she saw Don on a satellite feed of his local night newscast in Chicago. Despite pretending she was over him, she finally admits she got drunk and called him, leaving a threatening voicemail on his phone. Lily tells Robin to delete Don's contact info from his phone.Barney comes back from talking to the ladies, insisting that even though he hasn't closed the deal just yet, he'll "get the yes. Barney Stinson allllllllllllllllllllllways gets the yes."Barney shows up in Ted's classroom with a gift: the blueprints for Ted's Goliath National Bank headquarters. Barney says the project is back on: "We're going to build your building."Despite Marshall's excitement, Ted says he's going to turn it down because GNB is "evil." Marshall agrees, but compares GNB to the Empire in "Star Wars," and says the Death Star is going to be built anyway so Ted might as well be the one to have it on his resume. Ted insists he likes his quiet life, and tells Barney the next day that he won't be doing the building.Later, at the bar, Barney ignores Ted while they're talking and when Barney walks away Ted explains to Marshall that Barney is mad because Ted isn't going to do the GNB building. Marshall says that's odd because Barney had just told him he'd "get the yes" from Ted. "Barney Stinson allllllllllllllllllllllways gets the yes," Barney tells Marshall in his flashback. Ted realizes this is the same thing Barney does when he's trying to land women.Marshall predicts Barney will next hit Ted with a backhanded compliment, which he does, criticizing Ted's haircut.Lily presses Robin into admitting she left him another message. Robin explains that she didn't delete Don's number because the message on her phone asked, "Are you sure?" and she wasn't. "I can't lie to my phone," she said. Robin proves to Lily that it's hard to delete a contact from your phone, and goes to delete Lily's dojo from her phone. Lily resists, saying she might go back, even though she last went "when everyone was saying, 'Whasaaaaaaaaaap?!'"Ted comes into the apartment and tells Robin that he now knows "what your kind goes through." She tells him, "For the last time, I do not care how big it was, it is not the same as giving birth!"Marshall, a little grossed out, explains that Ted is talking about what it's like to get Barney's moves put on him.She goes through Barney's main methods of wooing:1. Bragging on himself through the form of complaining.2. Intense eye contact.3. Establishing intimacy through physical contact. She asks Ted if he's told Barney that he knows what he's doing and that he won't be working on the building, and Ted admits he hasn't. Lily and Robin agree that Ted loves the attention, and Robin tells him, "You are so going to spread your legs and design that building."Lily tells Marshall that Robin hasn't deleted Don's number. She takes Marshall's phone and threatens to delete the number of the bar where Marshall's funk band played once, years ago. He resists, but finally relents. Then Robin deletes Don's number.Later, Ted tells Barney he can stop with the wooing because he isn't going to do the building. Barney says that's fine, and that they hired another architect. When Ted later tells Marshall that Barney resorted to the oldest trick in the book, Marshall tells Ted that Barney wasn't lying. They did hire another architect. Ted immediately regrets having turned down the job.Ted marches into Barney's office and says he'll do it. Barney says it's too late, but Ted offers to do it for half of what the other guy is doing it for, then says he'll do extra stuff, "lobby stuff." Barney nearly shakes Ted's hand on the deal, but Marshall admits it's a move, and he's sorry for lying but he was being Barney's wingman.Ted then says he really doesn't want to do the job and that he loves being a professor.Robin sees Lily and Marshall at the bar and Lily knows Robin did something again. Robin admits she called Don again and left another message in which she tried to tell Don she was over him, but again threatened his life, along with that of the Asian woman on his Facebook page. Robin says she couldn't delete Don's number from her brain and that they would always remain "unfinished."Back at Ted's lecture from the beginning of the episode, in which he was explaining the architect's work remained "unfinished," despite the fact that he never gave up on his dream. The architect, instead, was hit by a bus. Ted then realizes -- as we see a montage of Lily karate kicking her door and Marshall wearing the silly Dr. Seuss hat he wore with his band -- that he shouldn't give up on his dream, either. He leaves class and goes to meet with Barney. Before giving Barney a yes, Ted makes Barney take him out to dinner. Robin, meanwhile, calls Don one more time and realizes that she has forgotten his number, giving her the closure she was looking for.

more
Old Ted kicked off the night by telling the kids about how every girl has baggage, and he'd just met a new girl who seemed perfect but must have had some baggage. Barney started extolling the virtues of emotional baggage, which gives us porn. "Only women with major baggage go into porn," he said. That drew a "Major Baggage," with a salute from Ted and Robin.Robin urged him to look past women's baggage, but he reminded her that Stella was the last woman with baggage he gave a chance. That left him heartbroken when they were meant to get married and she ran off with her ex.Marshall claimed he had no baggage, but Robin said his baggage was being too nice. Ted said he could only hope Royce's baggage was being "too nice." That night, she spoke kindly of her father, but said she used to work in porn. Oh, that's PORN: Partners Offering Recreational Nutrition. Still, she seemed perfect -- until they went to see a movie: "The Wedding Bride," by Tony Grafanello (Stella's ex).Marshall and Lily were late in meeting Robin at the bar, because Marshall wanted to help some guys load a moving van on the way there. They were robbing an apartment.Ted showed up and told the gang about "The Wedding Bride." It was about him -- as played by Chris Kattan. In the movie, though, Ted was a slimy villain and Tony was the good guy.The details were wrong about Ted and Stella's relationship in the movie. His spontaneous and romantic proposal in the arcade was twisted around to make it seem like he was marrying her just to shut her up. And his famous "two-minute date" turned into a "two-minute quickie."The wedding was the big finish, where Tony came in and swept his "wedding bride" off her feet. When the movie ended, Ted was upset but Royce loved it. Then he realized that everyone has baggage -- including him.Ted said he wasn't going to tell Royce the movie was about him, but when his friends all went to see it, he knew he'd be unable to escape it. Royce told her own friends how much she hated the "Jed Mosley" character and didn't understand why Stella would even have been interested in Jed Mosley. Ted went off on Royce and her friends and said they were stupid for liking the movie. Royce asked for an apology and he said, "No can doosville, baby doll," borrowing a catch phrase from Jed Mosley.Ted told his friends the story and Marshall inspired him to go get Royce and make up with her, because she could be the one -- or at least, because she seems nice. He knew exactly where she'd be: at the theater watching "The Wedding Bride."He made his grand romantic gesture just as the similar one was happening on screen, except instead of offering to make her his wedding bride, he offered to make her some pancakes. She accepted, and they kissed.Later, Ted told Royce how much he appreciated being able to be honest with her about his baggage, but then she unloaded all of hers: She'd been left at the altar -- three times, and most recently because she blew all of her fiance's money gambling online. And that was why she now lives with her brother, sharing a bed in a small studio."Yep," Ted said. "You've gotta go."

more
Barney showed up with five tickets to "Robots vs. Wrestlers," which the guys thought was awesome. Lily was concerned that Robin wouldn't want to take the fifth ticket. She didn't. Lily called Robin and told her how much she missed hanging out with her -- then Robin returned to her live news broadcast. Barney was stunned that Robin turned down the invitation to "Robots vs. Wrestlers," which he called "the most important tradition" to the group. (It was the first time they'd ever planned on attending the event, about which they knew nothing).Ted quoted Emerson as he discussed Barney's fear that the group was falling apart, and everyone proceeded to make fart noises -- something they did every time he tried to get a little "high-brow."Ted received a formal-looking invitation for Marisa Heller, the golfing-wicker-furniture-buying-bird-owning woman who lived in the apartment before Ted and Marshall moved in. All of their knowledge about her was based on pieces of mail they'd inadvertently received for her. The invitation was for a swanky spring social The Alberta Building, the nicest building in New York. Ted wanted to go. Since there was an open bar, the group agreed to hit the spring social before the "Robots vs. Wrestlers" event.Lily posed as Marisa, but as she was about to check in (with clear instructions not to use her British accent), a red-headed woman checked in in front of Lily. It was Marisa Heller."Oh, bollocks," Lily muttered.Barney tried to introduce himself and pretend he'd met her at a party. It didn't work, but Ted went over and talked to her about the architect of the building and his high-brow conversation convinced her to let Ted & Co. attend the party with her. In the elevator, Lily referenced "The Young and the Restless" and asked if anyone in the elevator was a soap opera fan (she recalled a soap opera magazine being mailed to Marisa Heller at the apartment), but Marisa said she didn't own a TV. "The only operas I watch are at the Met," she added. Barney, Lily and Marshall scowled. Ted called dibs. The elevator opened and Marshall realized he was not dressed for the occasion. Barney made up a word for what he saw: "Douche-pocalypse." Ted was excited to see Peter Bogdanovich talking to Ariana Huffington and Will Shortz (crossword editor for The New York Times). He asked his friends to give the party a chance.Marshall and Lily were unimpressed by the food selection -- there was nothing "mini" on the platters; and Barney's line about having to perform surgery on the Dutch ambassador, to whom Barney referred as "he," the next morning didn't work because the woman he tried it on knew a doctor who'd prescribed medication to the Dutch ambassador -- and the ambassador was a woman.Marshall tried to strike some life into the party by whacking an antique gong. He got yelled at by Jefferson Van Smoot, the party's host, who said, "Young man, that gong is a 500-year-old relic that hasn't been struck since W.S. Gilbert hit it at the London premiere of 'The Mikado' in 1885." Marshall turned to Lily and sarcastically said "that guy's wife is a 500-year-old relic that hasn't been struck since W.S. Gilbert hit it at the London premiere of 'The Mikado' in 1885."They high-fived.Ted was having a great time and Marisa told him they'd be blind tasting some French white wines, and he decided he wanted to stay and skip "Robots vs. Wrestlers."Barney panicked because Ted was ditching the group "for these stuffy, pretentious snoots." Barney said that if Ted skipped "Robots vs. Wrestlers" it'd be the end of their friendship." He kicked Ted out of the gang forever, and said he could re-apply in two years. Then he smacked the gong on his way out the door.Marshall was loving "Robots vs. Wrestlers," but Barney couldn't enjoy it for fear that the gang was broken up. Barney asked Lily to promise she wouldn't have a baby for at least a year. Barney then started to list a bunch of rules that Lily and Marshall would have to adhere to if they had a baby.Back at the party, Ted was impressing the stuffy folk with his knowledge of French wine and his reciting of Dante's "Inferno" in its original Italian. And that's when he realized that with no one stopping him by making fart noises, he actually sounded kind of douchey. He hoped something would interrupt him. That was when one of the wrestlers' masks had been taken off and his face exposed something that left Marshall, Lily and Barney amazed. The wrestler was Ted's doppelganger -- Mexican Wrestler Ted. Barney snapped a picture and texted it to Ted. He saw it and left the party to rejoin his friends at the bar.At McClaren's, Marshall and Lily talked about whether they were ready to have kids. Marshall wanted them, but Lily wasn't so sure. They realized that if they'd had a kid, they would've missed "Robots vs. Wrestlers" and wouldn't have seen Ted's doppelganger. They thought it was a sign. Since they'd seen Robin, Marshall and Ted's doppelgangers, they decided to wait until they saw Barney's, and that would be a sign from the universe that they were ready to have a kid. When Ted showed up at the bar, Barney first blew him off, but then begged Ted to rejoin the gang and said he could recite all the poetry he wanted to. Ted started to recite an Emerson poem about friendship, and shortly after he started, Robin walked in and made a fart noise, saying someone had to stop him.Old Ted told us and the kids that over the years, the friends had drifted apart now and then, but from that year onward, they always got back together for "Robots vs. Wrestlers."
