more
Lucy has fully acclimated to her new suburban life with her green thumb and beautiful garden. She enters Westport's garden contest and is in direct competition with her new neighbor and friend, Betty Ramsey. Betty is amused at Lucy's efforts, but tells her that it's inconceivable that Lucy could win first prize. Infuriated at her smug attitude, Lucy and Betty get into a dust up. More arguing ensues when Ricky fails to mow the lawn and goes off to a baseball game. Lucy tries to use the Ramsey's power lawn mower and winds up 'mowing every lawn halfway' between her home and the main street of town. Worse, she has ruined Betty's garden and replaces her tulips with waxed ones. Ricky, contrite at what he's failed to do for his wife, agrees to finish the lawn at twilight and, without her knowing it, Lucy's tulip bed is very similar to Betty's. All comes to light the next day, in front of a panel of judges, under a very hot Connecticut sun.

The Ricardos are invited to a country club dance by their friends, the Munsons. Ricky balks at having to dress up and go out when he'd much rather stay home. The Ramseys and the Mertzes gather at the Ricardos and the evening is off to a dull start. The guys have a good moan about what lies ahead for them. However, when the Munsons arrive with their house guest, sexy cousin Diana Jordan in tow, the men get a shot in the arm. The gallant trio of husbands argue about dancing with Diana, while their wives look on in disbelief and dismay. The same crowd assemble at the club the next evening, but the three suburban housewives give Diana a run for her money, what with new hairstyles, 'exotic' perfume and Lucy, in a very tight dress. The boys are very attentive to their wives, Lucy becomes suspicious, leaves the gathering with Ethel and Betty and the battle of the sexes rages on.

Bills, bills, bills! Ricky is on a rant about how, indeed, living in Connecticut is very expensive. Lucy suggests that they are not being resourceful and that many of their neighbors run small businesses to help with the high cost of living. Lucy's idea is to buy some chickens and sell fresh eggs. The Ricardos run the idea by the Mertzes during a visit and Fred thinks it's a great plan. Fred was raised on a farm, so when the Ricardos advertise for a hired hand, the Mertzes apply and, of course, get the job. Not only are they partners in business, but neighbors yet again - the Mertzes have a manager for their NYC apartment building. In the meantime, Betty Ramsey tells Lucy that her editor friends at House and Garden Magazine would be interested in featuring her home. Lucy is thrilled, but is sidetracked when she and Ethel buy 500 baby chicks before Fred is finished working on the chicken coop. Things run amok when the chicks are let loose in the house, and amid the chaos, Betty arrives with her magazine friends. Lucy is stunned and must content herself that her home has a better chance of appearing in the next issue of 'The Chicken Breeders' Gazette.'

Betty takes charge and before their shopping expedition is over, Lucy has purchased an entire household of expensive furniture and spent '3272.75 cents!' A very nervous Lucy phones the Mertzes in New York for support and urges them to catch the next train in preparation for Ricky's return. He is livid and demands the return of every piece, putting Lucy in a tight spot. Betty is insulted at Lucy's suggestion. Ricky tries to have a 'man to man' talk with husband, Ralph Ramsey, but tempers flare. The Mertzes explain to the Ramseys that the Ricardos just can't afford this hefty purchase and the Ramseys are very understanding. Ultimately, through a stroke of luck, Lucy's new and beautiful Colonial furniture will remain in her lovely Colonial home.

Convinced that his wife never likes the presents he buys for her, Fred asks Lucy to secretly find a birthday present for Ethel on his behalf. Lucy agrees, and later is with Ethel when she happens to find the gift-wrapped package in a closet. Ethel is less than excited about it, complaining that Fred has a history of giving her horrible gifts. Lucy urges Ethel to sneak a peek at what's inside. Reluctantly unwrapping the gift, Ethel pulls out a pair of strange-looking pants, gives them a quizzical glance and exclaims, "Well, he's done it again." Lucy hides her dismay, speaking up for Fred, trying to explain that they are chic hostess pants, the kind you wear to "smart dinner parties." Ethel is unimpressed, saying, "Oh, I've been wondering what to wear to all those smart dinner parties." When Lucy reveals that it was she and not Fred who selected the gift, this leads to an argument and an estrangement. In Act II, Ricky and Fred scheme to get the girls together again by taking them both to the theater to see a new hit show, "Over the Teacups". Ethel and Lucy are forced to sit together as they watch the play. Their anger toward each other softens as they listen to the play, a drama in which the main character is presented with news of a friend's death.

The losers of the bet must each pay the other two $50 if they are the first pair to slip up and use a modern convenience. Ricky objects when Lucy wants to use her oven, but relents when Lucy tries to fill the oven with wood to burn like back into the day.Lucy makes Ricky take a bath in a tub she put in the kitchen from water heated on the stove. Ethel tries to make butter but was trying to churn milk instead of cream. After Lucy corrects her, Ethel comes back with a pound of freshly churned butter that she says only cost her $23.Lucy tries to make bread. Her dough contains 13 cloves of yeast. Ethel reads the recipe and corrects Lucy by telling her that she only needed 3 cloves. Lucy replies that she'll just bake a few more loaves and won't have to bake for a couple of weeks.Once she lets the dough rise, Lucy finds that she needs to put it in a larger bowl. An hour later, the dough is so much larger that she and Ethel barely can lift it into an even larger bowl. Finally, Lucy puts the large clump of dough onto a cookie sheet and pops it in the preheated oven.Later when Lucy returns, she wonders why the oven door is slightly ajar. When she opens the door, an 18 foot loaf of bread pushes out and pins her against the sink!Lucy and Ethel dress in turn-of-the-century clothes and expect to win the bet if they can catch Ricky returning from work in a cab, off the bus or from the subway. He rides up on a horse! Lucy insists that Ricky and Fred wear old clothes too, figuring that the girls can win because Ricky won't walk in public dressed in the old clothes. Ricky says he'll make it part of a publicity stunt for a new 1890's skit at the club. Fred comes in singing in his old duds. Lucy asks why Fred is so happy. Ethel explains that he likes those clothes. Fred says that it reminds him of when he was young and gay.A telegram arrives that informs Lucy and Ethel that they are invited to be interviewed for a high class women's social club on Friday. Lucy wants to visit her salon to have her hair and nails done, but realizes that she will lose the bet if she does. A knock on the door turns out to be a surprise visit by two of the social club's interviewers. They have come unannounced to see how Lucy really lives while Fred, Ethel, Ricky and Lucy are dressed in their outdated clothes. The women call Lucy's kitchen "primitive," and Ricky comes to Lucy's aid by saying that they are rehearsing for his club. One of the women ask why he does it. He replies that he has a bad habit of eating. So she concludes that they are show people. The social club woman says that they have strict standards against show people. The other social club woman corrects her by saying that they have made allowances last year when they needed money. Lucy speaks up and says that she has been evaluating the social club and would not join a club that has disdain for show people. Fred, Ethel and Ricky cheer her, and Ricky says that he will pay the bet so that they can all go out to eat. Lucy says that they can only go after they eat a slice of her bread. She brings out a 2 square feet by 6 inches thick slice of her loaf with Ethel's butter on it. The four then bite all at once into the huge slice of bread.
