Storyline

English gentleman author Rudyard Kipling, famous for the Jungle Book, uses his considerable influence, being on a War Office propaganda think tank, to get his nearly 18 ear-old son John 'Jack', repeatedly refused for service during World war I on account of his bad eyesight, enrolled in the Irish Guards: their patriotic dream but mother and sister's nightmare. “My Boy Jack” is a 2007 television drama based on David Haig's play of the same name. Despite his weak eyesight, Rudyard Kipling's son Jack was determined to serve in the military during World War I. Unlike many parents, Kipling was adamant that his son have the opportunity to see action and uphold the values that were a constant motif in his writing. It was filmed in August 2007, with Haig as Rudyard Kipling and Daniel Radcliffe as Jack Kipling. It does not include act three of the play, which extended to the 1920s and 1930s. Instead it ends with Kipling reading the poem “My Boy Jack”. The American television premiere was April 20, 2008 on PBS. Download “My Boy Jack” right now!

Follows Kipling's change of heart towards WW1, from drum-banging propagandist to regret-laden bereaved parent.

The film is probably more like a study of the British national mood at the time, measured by Rudyard Kipling.
