After Ned told Chuck he is responsible for her father's death, she took off. Now Ned is looking for her in the wintry streets, unable to find her. Oscar Vibenius however, ?s able to find Chuck and tells her he knows that she (along with Digby) has a secret that has something to do with death... With Chuck not being able to go to The Pie Hole, Olive makes the pie for Chuck's aunts. What she doesn't know is that Chuck's special ingredient is a drug. She thinks it's vanilla and because she considers it rather weak, she puts in a lot more than Chuck usually does. In the meantime, there's a case involving corpses of life insurance agents ending up in snowmen that needs to be solved.

A few days before the release of the book, one of his students, Anita Grey, tragically dies in a mysterious explosion. Her mother calls Emerson and Emerson, Ned and Chuck talk to Anita who tells them she died while scratching a scratch-and-sniff patch of the self-help book. Emerson concludes someone was trying to kill Napoleon LeNez instead of Anita. Meanwhile, Ned and Olive still don't fully know how to react to each other because of their kiss and, to Ned's dislike, Chuck wants The Pie Hole to start serving cup-pies.

When she hears a man named Lucas Shoemaker is dead, Olive hires Emerson because she thinks Shoemaker was murdered. When Ned touches Shoemaker, he tells Ned he was killed by John Joseph Jacobs and that Jacobs will kill again. He also says Jacobs died seven years ago! It turns out that Shoemaker was a former jockey, just like Olive, and that they, along with two other jockeys, raced against Jacobs in the very prestigious Jock-off 2000, in which Jacobs fell and died. It seems that his ghost is now out to kill all four of them!

When a crop duster hits the building across the street, Ned, Emerson and Chuck check it out. Owner of the apartment is the unharmed Conrad Fitch, an attractive man who catches Chuck when she falls, which makes Ned rather uncomfortable. The widow of the pilot hires them to prove he hasn't killed himself but that he was murdered instead so she can get the life insurance money. The pilot tells Ned his crop duster was hijacked by a man in an orange prison suit.
