“Rescue Dawn” is a 2007 film starring Christian Bale and Steve Zahn. It was written and directed by Werner Herzog, based on the director's acclaimed 1997 documentary, Little Dieter Needs to Fly. NBA all-star Elton Brand is the film's producer through his production company Gibraltar Entertainment, which he co-owns with partner Steve Marlton. Based on the true story of German-born Dieter Dengler, who dreamed of being a test pilot and thus made his way to America, where he joined the military in pursuit of his obsession to fly. On his first mission in Vietnam, he is shot down and captured by Vietcong guerrillas. “Rescue Dawn” was originally scheduled to be released by MGM in December 2006, but was held back for limited release in the United States at some point in 2007. The film had a nationwide release on July 27, 2007, after a limited release in New York City, Toronto, and Los Angeles on July 4. It was pretty good and stars Christian Bale, whom was very good in this as in most of his films. Bale plays, Dieter, a downed airplane pilot over Laos during the war. This movie is beautifully terrible to watch, fantastically horrible and deeply disturbing. Bale is consistently a solid actor. His accent is the only challenge to seem German but easily overlooked by the terrific acting otherwise. Also most of the talking is in whispers so it is rarely noticed.... more
