Jake's wish for more action may come true when a distress call is sent in from the Ajilon Prime colony. They are under attack by the Klingons. They urgently need medical supplies and a doctor in a hospital near the front line. Bashir doesn't want to take Sisko's son with him, but Jake is able to convince him otherwise. Jake is delighted, but is the young reporter really prepared for the horror that is war? Meanwhile captain Sisko hears the Farragut will pick the two up the next day, but gets more anxious as time progresses.

The crew of Deep Space Nine is on Torga IV in the Gamma Quadrant. The planet is believed to contain cormaline deposits. While determining the feasibility of a mining operation, suddenly a Jem'Hadar warship crashes into the surface. The crew is dead. Sisko decides to salvage it. Then another Jem'Hadar ship arrives. They attack. The crew is forced to retreat into the crashed ship. Engineer Muniz is badly hurt by a phaser blast. Then suddenly the attack stops. It seems the Jem'Hadar are not prepared to wage war inside the ship. A Vorta is even prepared to negotiate and the Jem'Hadar try unusual sneak tactics to gain access. Sisko gets a very strong feeling there's something going on, that there's an object so important in the ship, that the Jem'Hadar can't risk destroying it. While the crew try to find out what it is and the troops of the Dominion lay siege, time is running out for Muniz.

The war between the Klingons and the Federation is rapidly progressing into a full scale conflict and Starfleet has decided that something must be done. Now that Odo has told chancellor Gowron is a changeling, Sisko is ordered to infiltrate into the Klingon empire and expose him. Sisko selects O'Brien, Worf and Odo as the people to go with him, there's only one problem. Odo is still having a lot of trouble adjusting to his new life as a 'solid'. His work isn't fulfilling anymore and he's not interested in joining the mission. Sisko doesn't take no for an answer. Meanwhile the plan is taking shape, with only one problem. Gowron moved his headquarters to Ty'Gokor, heavily fortified and located in an tachyon grid protected asteroid field deep in Klingon space. Gowron is also protected by the Yan-Isleth, his personal security force. Approaching the chancellor unnoticed seems impossible.

After Garak tries to set up a date for Chalan Aroya, the owner of the Celestial Caf?, with Odo, the constable is suddenly in severe pain. He has great trouble to hold his shape. Bashir notices his mass and density are in a state of fluctuation. When the fluctuation increases, he gets an attack. While Bashir is optimistic at first, Odo's condition deteriorates. His molecular structure is destabilizing at an alarming rate and the doctor thinks he only has two weeks before he loses his ability to stay solid. Odo and Bashir both know there's only option: going to the Founders. When Garak hears of the planned trip, he requests to come along. He wants to meet with the Founders to inquire about possible survivors of the failed attack on the Founders' home world by the Tal'Shiar and the Obsidian Order.

The three land and find a pauperized world that doesn't look like it was attacked recently though. The people seem depressed. Bashir finds out all the people suffer from a disease called the blight. Once their world stood up to the Dominion and as punishment they introduced the disease. All people have lesions and when they get infected, they die. The doctor is shocked to find out the people turn to euthanasia when they have 'quickened'. A doctor, Trevean, provides a way out. Bashir offers to help find a cure, but finds only skepticism. Only one pregnant woman, Ekoria, listens with interest.

Eddington and Odo have an unpleasant message for him however. They suspect Kasidy Yates is involved in smuggling for the Maquis. Sisko is angry about the accusation at first. He refuses to let Odo survey her, but finally agrees to a cargo check. Then Kasidy asks him to skip the inspection. Sisko agrees, but sends the Defiant after her. Meanwhile Garak can't keep his eyes of Ziyal and she returns his looks with a smile every time. Garak is still wary though. She is after all the daughter of his archenemy Dukat and under the protection of Kira, who isn't too fond of the tailor either. Then Ziyal offers him a meeting in a Cardassian holosuite program.

Two women arrive on the station. One is a familiar face. Lwaxana Troi comes to visit Odo and announces she is pregnant. She asks for Odo's help. Her husband Jeyal is Tavnian and in Tavnian tradition the sexes grow up apart. She would have to abandon her baby. Odo is reluctant at first, but surprisingly his relationship with Lwaxana blossoms after she shows a lot of interest in shapeshifting. Then Jeyal arrives on the station. The other woman, Onaya, is rather mysterious. She tells she has a weakness for artists and seems very interested in Jake's writing capabilities. She flatters him and offers him to show exercises and techniques. Jake gladly agrees and even skips a trip to the Bajoran outback with his father for a meeting. But Onaya's method seems quite intrusive. She wants something from Jake.

Benjamin and Jake Sisko are surprised by the sudden arrival of Jennifer Sisko from the Mirror Universe. She claims to be here to visit Benjamin and brings good news: the rebels have captured Terok Nor from the alliance. But when the captain returns from a long meeting, he finds the two are gone. Jennifer has taken Jake to the Mirror Universe. Benjamin decides to bring him back, but after arriving finds himself arrested by Smiley. Jennifer has kidnapped Jake so the captain can be forced to help the rebels. Smiley explains that an alliance fleet led by the regent is on their way to the station. The only possible help comes from a copy of the Defiant. Sisko needs to sort out its startup problems and is forced to agree. Meanwhile Jake has no trouble whatsoever with the situation and begins to build a relationship with his mother look-a-like.

The crew of Deep Space Nine do their utter best to let O'Brien re-adjust to the 'new' situation, but it is clear the happening has had a major impact on him. He gets increasingly more violent to even his closest friends and refuses to go to a psychiatrist. O'Brien even purposely tells he was alone in his cell, while this clearly isn't true. Something about his cell-mate Ee'Char is bothering him immensely. The fact that a hallucinative Ee'Char hunts him is driving him mad.

The Klingon Empire has asked the Federation to extradite Worf for murder. Worf commanded the Defiant which was guarding a Cardassian convoy offering medical aid to the Pentath colony. The convoy was attacked by the Klingons and in the heat of battle Worf gave the order to fire on a decloaking ship. It was a civilian transport, 441 Klingons died. The Klingon advocate Ch'Pok is trying to prove to admiral T'Lara in a hearing that Worf's bloodlust took over. Ch'Pok has a hidden agenda and he openly admits it. The Klingons see this as the perfect opportunity to gain sympathy and weaken the Federation. Captain Sisko is defending Worf and asks Odo to try to find out why the civilian transport joined the battle. Sisko's defense in the meantime is not going well. With every witness Ch'Pok's reasoning seems more and more plausible.

The crew is surprised when the wormhole opens and an ancient Bajoran lightship comes through. Inside is the poet Akorem Laan who disappeared from Bajor over two centuries ago. Laan was rescued by the prophets and now sent back as emissary, so he claims. Sisko doesn't feel like contradicting him since the prophecies seem to suit the story of Laan better. He is also relieved to be finally able to give up the difficult position. But Sisko gets second thoughts when Laan wants to reintroduce the D'jarras, the abolished Bajoran caste system. Meanwhile Keiko returns from Bajor. Molly tells O'Brien she is pregnant. The chief feels compelled to be at home in his free time and stop spending it with Bashir. It's very obvious he misses the holosuite adventures with the doctor though

It's the Bajoran time of Cleansing and business is very slow at Quark's bar. Rom's ear is aching up again, he even faints, but gets no sick leave from Quark. When Quark announces a pay cut for all the employees Rom is fed up. On advice from Bashir he decides to start a union, strictly forbidden by Ferengi law. But Rom is determined and convinces all the other employees to join. At first Quark laughs, then finds himself without the striking staff, still he won't give in. Just when captain Sisko orders him to end the strike, liquidator Brunt arrives. Meanwhile Worf still has problems settling on the station. He dislikes that security is less than on the Enterprise, he is annoyed by the continuous technological malfunctions and even gets into a fight with O'Brien and Bashir over entering Quark's bar. Worf sees only one solution.

Worf hasn't heard anything from his brother Kurn since chancellor Gowron brought the glory days of the house of Mogh to an end. Since suicide is out of the question, Kurn believes only Worf is capable of giving him his honor back by killing him. Meanwhile Kira and O'Brien are on their way home. Near the Bajoran border they are startled by a sudden high energy discharge. It looks like a cloaked ship exploded, but there's no debris. When the two want to take a closer look, a Klingon ship stops them. They claim to be conducting military exercises. Kira doesn't trust it, neither does Sisko. He gives permission to take the Defiant for a better look.

Kira has been asked by Shakaar to attend a conference on a remote Cardassian outpost. The two governments will exchange intelligence about the Klingons. The Major will be personally brought to this location by Gul Dukat. Ever since he brought his half Bajoran daughter Ziyal to Cardassia, things haven't been going well for him. He was stripped of his rank and is now a simple freighter captain. But, so he ensures Kira, it is only a temporary setback for him. When Kira arrives in Cardassian space, the outpost has been attacked by a Klingon bird-of-prey. All the diplomats are dead. Kira suggests mounting an outpost disruptor on the freighter to go after the Klingons. While Kira wants revenge for the dead diplomats, Dukat sees this as the perfect opportunity to redeem himself.

Odo's highlight of the day is when Kira visits his office to discuss the latest crime report with a cup of raktajino. It's very obvious to at least Quark he is in love with her. The Bajoran first minister Shakaar is coming for talks with the Federation to the station. It will be a very busy time for Odo, especially after a death threat is received. It's very serious since it's coming from a Cardassian extremist group called True Way, that already succeeded in killing two Bajoran officials. Sisko ups the protection. Odo tries his best to ensure Shakaar's safety, but in the process finds out he has feelings for her. Shakaar even asks Odo if he thinks it is mutual. While he denies it, love seems to blossom nonetheless. He takes her for a stroll, she arrives late at the daily crime report meeting and spends the night in Shakaar's quarters. Odo is devastated and is starting to have a very hard time concentrating on his important duties.

All power has been cut and president Jaresh-Inyo finally agreed to Sisko and Leyton's request to put Earth under Martial Law. Starfleet security personnel is roaming the streets of every city. It's been four days since then, but still there's no sign of a Dominion invasion. Joseph Sisko decides to reopen the restaurant. Meanwhile Odo brings a strange security report to the attention of captain Sisko. Apparently Red Squad was demobilized just moments after the power was cut. While the two first think that it was to get them out of harm's way, new evidence pops up. Apparently the entire group of cadets was reassigned to field duty three hours later. Sisko gets very suspicious, especially after a Starfleet member asks him to immediately delete the report. He orders Nog to provide him the name of one of the members of Red Squad to conduct an interview. He doesn't like what the cadet tells him.

The wormhole is showing erratic behavior by sudden openings and the Bajorans think it's a message from the prophets. Then grave news arrives on Deep Space Nine. There has been a bombing with 27 dead in Antwerp and a changeling has been spotted on the crime scene. The thing most feared has happened: the changelings have reached Earth. The Sisko's and Odo travel to Earth and admiral Leyton makes Sisko acting head of Starfleet Security on Earth. The captain's first task is to convince the president of the Federation, Jaresh-Inyo, to implement harsh security measures. The changelings aren't Sisko's only problem. He also has to deal with his stubborn father, who refuses to follow doctor's advice. Jake meets with Nog who tells him he has problems at the Academy. He doesn't seem to be accepted by a group of elite cadets known as Red Squad.

Sisko, O'Brien, Dax, Worf and Kira are coming back from a tiresome conference. Suddenly there's a power surge in the warp core of the runabout. The ship's been sabotaged and it explodes. Eddington is only barely able to beam them off, but the shock wave damages the transporters. Their patterns are still in the system though and by deleting station's memory Eddington is able to store them. Meanwhile doctor Bashir plays secret agent Bashir, Julian Bashir in a holosuite. He is surprised by the arrival of Garak and finally allows him to join. Then suddenly KGB agent Anastasia Komananov looks like Kira. While Bashir thinks it is another uninvited guest, the truth soon becomes clear. The five crew members have become an integral part of the holo adventure. With the safeties off Bashir has to do his utter best to keep everyone alive, while Eddington and Rom try to solve the problem.

Dax introduces him to Worf and Kor tells of a quest he is planning. He has found a clue to the possible location of the Sword of Kahless, the founder of the Klingon Empire. It's been lost for a thousand of years and it is said that when it is found it will once again reunite the Klingon empire. Worf and Kor seem to like each other because they are both opposed to Gowran. Together with Dax they plan to find the relic to turn it over to the Emperor. The two Klingons make it a late celebration. Kor returns to his quarters in a very drunken state, where he is attacked telepathically by a Lethean.

Nog is about to leave for the Academy and Quark spots a perfect opportunity. He has just received a shuttle from his cousin Gaila, that was promised him ten years ago. He doesn't trust it and asks Rom to, but he can find nothing out of order. Quark and Rom decide to take Nog to the Academy with it. Not because Quark approves or wants to do the boy a favor, he wants to take contraband along: kemacite. When they arrive at Earth, they find out Gaila intention's weren't so good after all. He sabotaged the ship, they can't get out of warp and eventually it will tear to pieces. Rom can think of only one thing: start a cascade reaction in the kemacite, create an inversion wave in the warp core, then crash land on Earth and hope for the best. When they wake up, they are locked up in a room. Earth seems to have changed a bit. It's 1947... Roswell, New Mexico. The three "aliens" are then taken by the local authorities who are both fascinated and fearful of these extraterrestials, and Quark must find a way to con their captors in order to escape and find a way to get back to their own time.

Captain Sisko is asked to mediate on the Defiant between the Karemma and the Ferengi. Hanok, its representative, finds there's little profit in trading with them. Quark has made up all sort of non-existent fees and Sisko is not amused. Then two Jem'Hadar ships suddenly attack the Karemma ship. It tries to flee into a gas giant planet with dangerously high wind speeds, but the Jem'Hadar still follow. Sisko orders the Defiant to go after them to help the Karemma. With barely no sensors and the phasers inactive, the crew must be creative. The situation brings contemplation. Quark is joined by Hanok in the mess hall. He tries to make things well with the Karemma, Bashir and Dax are trapped and they discuss the crush the doctor had on her. Kira reevaluates her relationship with Sisko as both captain and the Emissary, while Worf learns a few things about command.

A science team of Trills comes to visit the station to do a test on creating artificial wormholes. The leader of the team is Dr. Lenara Kahn, a joined Trill. The former host of the Kahn symbiont was Nilani. She was the wife of Torias, one of Dax's former hosts. On Trill, it is strictly forbidden to re-associate with a past lover. The punishment is exile, meaning the symbiont will die. To avoid problems, Sisko offers Jadzia Dax to take extended leave. She denies and thinks she's up to the task. But when Jadzia and Lenara start working on the science project, they both seem to get along really well. While they try deny it at first, the romantic spark between them isn't gone.

Major Kira gets a message from Razka Karn, a smuggler during the occupation. He claims to have a found a lead to the location of the lost Cardassian prison ship Ravinok. One of her friends, Lorit Akrem, was on board and she decides to start an investigation. Then Sisko approaches her and asks her to wait. The Cardassian government has heard of her plans and wants to send a representative along. Kira is surprised to see it is Gul Dukat. He has a secret. Meanwhile, Sisko faces a problem of his own: Kasidy Yates announces she found a job opportunity in the Bajoran sector. She and the captain will be finally able to see each other more. Dax makes the suggestion she could get Kasidy quarters on the station. Kasidy likes the idea, but Sisko gets more and more uncomfortable. It's going a bit too fast for him and Kasidy notices his hesitation.

While investigating, the shuttle crash lands and they are taken prisoner by a renegade group of Jem'Hadar. Its leader, Goran'Agar, got free of his addiction to ketracel white on this planet, the drug that makes them dependent on the Founders. He's brought a group of Jem'Hadar to be cured too, but the planet's 'magic' doesn't work on them. He asks Bashir to help before their supply of white runs out. While the doctor wants to help them, O'Brien is adamantly opposed. Meanwhile, back on the Deep Space Nine station, Worf spots a known criminal in Quark's bar. He thinks the Ferengi is plotting something and is getting increasingly agitated by the way Odo handles security on the station. Worf decides to take matters into his own hands.

Jake Sisko, now an old man, is living alone in a house in a bayou. He gets an unexpected visit from Melanie. She's an aspiring writer and considers Jake as her favorite author. She was surprised he published only two works. At the age of 40, Jake simply stopped writing and Melanie wants to know why. Jake starts telling her the story of how his father died in an accident on the Defiant. Benjamin and Jake went to see the wormhole undergo a subspace inversion, that only happens once in several decades. Something was wrong however and the warp core was about to breach. After repairing it, Sisko was hit by a beam and disappeared. Few months later things were returning to normal for Jake, but suddenly he saw his father in his bedroom, only to disappear a moment later. But this wasn't the only time his father reappeared.

The crew of Deep Space Nine is preparing for a possible attack by the Dominion. There's a drill to find a shape-shifters and the station is retrofitted. Suddenly a ship decloaks. It's the Klingon general Martok and he's not alone. An entire Klingon fleet has been stationed nearby. Sisko welcomes them and Martok claims the fleet is at Deep Space Nine to fight with the Federation against the Dominion. Soon the trouble starts. The Klingons harass Morn, they beat up Garak and try to hijack Kasidy Yates' ship to look for shape-shifters. They continue checking ships outside of Bajoran space after. Sisko doesn't trust it anymore and asks the only Klingon in Starfleet, Worf, to find out what the Klingon fleet really is up to.

There's a party on Deep Space Nine as Sisko has just been promoted to captain. Ambassador Krajensky is present at the party, but he hasn't just come to congratulate Sisko. He tells there's been a coup d'?tat on the Tzenkethi home world. They were once at war with the Federation and Krajensky wants to remind them that Federation is still committed to the protection of the colonies. Sisko takes the Defiant to Tzenkethi space. While working on the ship O'Brien hears some strange sounds. He finds Julian working in a Jefferies tube. Julian claims to have connected a new diagnostic console. Not long after the communications array malfunctions. O'Brien and Dax discover a parasitic tube-like system that is invading the ship's equipment, protected by a forcefield. It's right next to the place where Bashir connected his medical console.

Sisko gets an urgent message from Bajor and delivers some bad news to Kira. Kalem Aprem, First Minister of the Provisional Government, has died from a heart attack. Kira is very upset to hear spiritual leader Kai Winn has already been appointed as successor. Kira is concerned about the future of Bajor and she can't shake the feeling that giving Winn control of the government is a mistake. Suddenly Winn visits the station to see Kira. She has a favor to ask. Shakaar, the leader of Kira's resistance cell during the Cardassian occupation and now farmer, refuses to return some government-loaned soil reclamators. They are used to detoxify soil poisoned by the Cardassians. Winn wants to use them in the Rakantha province, once Bajor's most productive farmland. She thinks this will once again make export possible, increasing Bajor's changes of being accepted into the Federation. Kira agrees to talk to Shakaar.

Quark and Rom are in panic when suddenly the Ferengi liquidator Brunt posts a writ of accountability on the bar's walls. He is from the Ferengi Commerce Authority. Only after a couple of bribes Quark finds out what they're charged with. They are held accountable for the criminal activities of their mother Ishka. Apparently she has been earning profits, strictly forbidden for a woman. Quark is required by law to convince her to sign a confession and reveal her accomplices. Failure will result in her being placed in servitude and Quark will have to make restitution for her crimes, a prospect he doesn't fancy. He and Rom travel to the Ferengi home world. Meanwhile Jake tells his father freighter captain Kasidy Yates is back on the station. He really wants them both to meet and wants to arrange dinner. Sisko wants to take it more easy and do things his own way.

Sisko has just come back from opening a library on Bajor. In the library he found blueprints of ships that the Bajorans apparently used 800 years ago to explore their star system. These ships didn't use a warp drive, but had solar sails and were propelled by light pressure. Some scholars even say they reached Cardassia. Sisko decides to try to recreate one of them and take it into space to prove it's possible. He asks Jake along, but he doesn't want to go. When Jake receives a message from Wellington, New Zealand he changes his mind. He wants to tell his father something. Meanwhile Dr. Bashir anxiously awaits the arrival of the Kensington. On board is Dr. Elizabeth Lense, she was the best of his medical class on the Academy and took the most prestigious job, medical officer on the Lexington. When the two meet, she completely ignores him. Bashir doesn't take it too well.

The joint Romulan and Cardassian fleet approaches the station. Sisko is ready for a fight, but the fleet immediately goes through the wormhole. They are on their way to destroy the Founders' home planet. Sisko wants to pursue them to find the captured Odo, but Starfleet Command has different plans. Admiral Toddman orders the Defiant to stay back and guard Bajor. Sisko is not amused and defies the admiral's orders. Meanwhile on the fleet Enabram Tain gives Garak his first assignment: he must interrogate Odo to find out about possible planetary defenses of the Founders. Garak gets a device that emits a quantum stasis field. It was designed by the Obsidian Order to prevent changelings from altering their form.

Suddenly Garak's shop explodes. Luckily the tailor isn't hurt badly. O'Brien finds the explosion was caused by a ruptured power conduit and Odo immediately expects foul play. His assumption is confirmed when O'Brien finds traces of nitrilin, which Odo thinks might have been part of a micro-explosive device. Odo asks Garak if he can think of possible suspects, but the Cardassian seems rather uninterested. He frustrates Odo's investigation, makes fun of it and once again spins his web of lies. Then O'Brien brings evidence of a pheromonic sensor in the bomb, used to go off on certain species only. Since this technique is favored by Flaxian assassins and a Flaxian arrived on the station earlier, Odo decides to interrogate him. But his investigation won't stop at the Flaxian...

Chief O'Brien, in common clothes, suddenly pokes a phaser in Sisko's back and disappears with the captain through the transporter. It soon becomes clear he has been taken to the mirror universe, where Kira and Bashir got stuck earlier. O'Brien tells the Terrans started a rebellion against the Klingon-Cardassian-Bajoran alliance. The mirror Sisko was their leader, but he recently died. Sisko tells O'Brien he is not interested in replacing him, but his interest is piqued when O'Brien mentions the words Jennifer Sisko. In the mirror universe Sisko's wife is still alive and working for the alliance. She's constructing a sensor array that will allow them to locate the rebels in the Badlands. Sisko agrees to complete mirror Sisko's last mission: convince Jennifer to switch sides.

Quark introduces Altovar, a Lethean to Dr. Bashir. He wants to buy biomimetic gel. Since that is a restricted substance, Bashir refuses to cooperate. Later on he finds the Lethean breaking in in the infirmary. He attacks Bashir with a telepathic weapon and the doctor passes out. When he awakes, the lights are malfunctioning. No one answers his communicator, the computer isn't in operation and the station seems to be deserted. He notices in a mirror he has gray hair, he seems to age very rapidly, and hears loud noises coming from the bar. There he finds Quark, afraid and trying to hide. Quark mentions that someone is going to kill them all, then runs for his life. When Bashir meets Garak the two try to find out what is going on.

While a Romulan delegation arrives on the station, chief O'Brien gets an accident. A plasma conduit blew out, but Bashir think's it's not serious. The Romulan delegation wants information about the Gamma Quadrant and especially the Dominion just as was agreed in the cloaking device agreement. But no matter how much they try, Sisko and Kira just can't seem to satisfy their needs. Meanwhile a group of Klingons has also arrived. Chief O'Brien tries to convince Quark to put up a dart board in the bar. Suddenly he gets a hallucination of himself talking to Quark about the Klingons damaging one of his holosuites and passes out. When his vision comes true, both Bashir and Dax can't find out what exactly is wrong. Then O'Brien gets another vision. He soon realizes that he experiences things that are about to happen in the near future and they aren't of the pleasant variety.

Quark and Rom get a visit from a rather strange acting Grand Nagus Zek. He shows them a book with the rewritten Rules of Acquisition to include rules like 'If they want their money back, give it to them' and 'Latinum tarnishes, but family is forever' isn't concerned anymore about profit and devotes his life to charity. Quark is worried and tries to find out what is wrong with the Grand Nagus, especially since he suspects Zek will be thrown of the Tower of Commerce and he and Rom with him when he presents the new rules. Meanwhile Bashir is nominated for the prestigious medical Carrington Award. Bashir thinks he's too young to be a serious contender and tries not to pay too much attention to it. To his dismay the subject is constantly brought up however.

A team of Cardassian scientists comes to visit the station to help setup a subspace communications relay in the Gamma Quadrant. Suddenly a Vedek, Yarka, wants to speak with Sisko. He brings a warning from the prophets and advises not to let the Cardassians on the station. He refers to Trakor's third prophecy that tells that three vipers, the Cardassians, will return to their nest in the sky, Deep Space Nine, ultimately leading to the destruction of the Celestial Temple, the wormhole. Sisko and Kira dismiss it at first, since only two Cardassians scientists are coming. Then a third Cardassian scientist arrives and Kira begins to believe the prophecy. When more and more of the predictions are coming true, Sisko must make a choice between his Federation duties and his role as Emissary.

Kira and Odo are returning to Deep Space Nine in a runabout. They just visited Prophet's Landing, a colony close to the Cardassian border, to review security procedures. When they receive a distress call from a Lissepian supply ship that was attacked by a Maquis one-man vessel, they start to follow the Maquis. The ship lands on a moon and Kira and Odo follow him into a very unstable cave. Kira's foot gets stuck in a strange crystal. While the crystal slowly encapsulates the major, Odo tries everything to free her. Meanwhile Nog makes a special request to Sisko. He has become an adult and is ordered by Ferengi by-laws to purchase an apprenticeship from a suitable role model. Nog wants to be the first Ferengi in Starfleet and asks Sisko to write a recommendation for the Academy.

A Bajoran transport with Vedek Bareil and Kai Winn aboard has an accident. When they arrive on the station, Bareil is critically injured. While Bashir tries do everything he can to save him, Kai Winn tells Sisko she and Bareil are involved in advanced peace talks with the Cardassians. The Cardassians are willing to pay reparations and even might be issuing a formal apology. Winn stresses the negotiations would have never come this far if it wasn't for Bareil and that she would be unable to complete them without Bareil being there. Meanwhile Jake tries to cancel a game of dom-jot with Nog to go out with a girl, Leanne. Nog thinks Jake also arranged a girl for him and Jake agrees to make it a double date. But things don't go as Jake has planned.

She thinks it's time for action and tries to find a way into the Sanctuary District. On the Defiant the crew decides their only option is to send people back into the past. There's just one problem, O'Brien has limited the options to 10, but there are not enough chroniton particles to do them all.

But they never arrive. O'Brien has no clue what happened: the logs show that he definitely arrived. Meanwhile the three find themselves in San Francisco in the year 2024. They have no ID and Bashir and Sisko are arrested and put in a concentration camp-like Sanctuary District. While the two try to find a way back, Sisko notices it's only days before major riots break out in the District, a pivotal moment in Earth's history. Meanwhile Dax is picked up Chris Brynner, a business man. He takes her to his home, where she starts searching for Bashir and Sisko.

When Bareil and O'Brien's family arrive, the Betazoid ambassador Lwaxana Troi is also in their shuttle. She has one goal: start a romantic relationship with Odo. When the festival starts some more unusual attractions pop up; Jake suddenly falls in love with Kira and Bareil abandons Kira to pursue Dax. Meanwhile O'Brien's love life isn't too well. The two days he has to spent with Keiko start off on the wrong foot.

Not liking it all, her mood becomes better when she meets commander Will Riker from the starship Enterprise in the bar. He has three months of leave and is on his way to the pleasure planet Risa. She seems to really like him and only the thought of Bareil is holding her back. At the end of the next day she runs into him again and offers him a tour of the facility. Riker asks immediately if he can take a look at the Defiant.

Despite the Dominion threat, Sisko still feels the urge to explore the Gamma Quadrant. The crew stumbles upon some unusual distortions in a system without planets. Suddenly a populated planet appears out of nowhere. Inhabitant Seltin Rakal tells Meridian shifts between the dimensions. In the other dimension, where time doesn't pass, they are non-corporeal, here they take on real form. One of the other Meridians, Deral, and Jadzia seem to really like each other. He tells the time in this dimension is growing shorter and shorter with each shift and eventually Meridian will cease to exist. Meanwhile Kira has her own love problems on DS9 with the alien Tiron. She rejects him and he turns to Quark to ask for a holosuite program with a recreation of Kira. Quark tries to make an image of her.

Sisko checks up on them, just while Jake finds a strange file in the database that he can't delete. When O'Brien wants to set it apart for analyzing, he trips a Cardassian security alert. He must enter a password, but fails. Suddenly the room is locked down and a recorded message Gul Dukat appears on a view screen. He warns the 'Bajoran workers' to surrender to their superiors or face the consequences. Neurocine gas will be released. With the first option not possible, Jake finds a way out of the room through an uridium shaft. But their troubles and that of the station's are far from over.

For three bars of latinum Quark buys the right to salvage a stranded ship in the Gamma Quadrant. Apart from a crying baby, he doesn't find anything of value. Bashir notices the boy has a very fast metabolic rate, he's growing extremely fast. Before the crew knows it, he is a teenager that starts fighting on the promenade. Only Odo is able to calm him down and Jadzia realizes he is a Jem'Hadar. When Odo hears the boy is to be examined in a Federation laboratory, he convinces Sisko that he should take care of the boy. Odo wants to try to change his nature, so he could live on Deep Space Nine as a normal humanoid. Meanwhile Sisko invites Jake's girlfriend Mardah for dinner. She's four years older than Jake and a Dabo girl at Quark's. Sisko is very opposed to their relationship.

But she never arrives. While the crew searches for her, Kira awakes on Cardassia. She's been turned into a Cardassian and is told she served as a spy on Bajor, whose long term memory was altered to avoid discovery. Her name is Iliana Ghemor, daughter of legate Tekeny Ghemor. While she denounces the thing as preposterous as first, she starts having serious doubts when Entek of the Obisidian Order provides more and more convincing proof.

At a Sisko house party, Jadzia sees a musical instrument. While she claims none of the hosts had even the slightest musical ability, she is able to get music out of it. She plays a tune and is frustrated she can't get it right. She gets obsessed by it, has trouble concentrating and starts behaving violently. When she gets hallucinations of a masked man that looks familiar, she is even more determined to find out what the music is and Sisko suggests running it through the Federation database. Then Bashir discovers Jadzia's isoboramine levels are down, a neurotransmitter between host and symbiont. Bashir has no clue why and he sees no other alternative than to take her to Trill, where the doctors of the Symbiosis Commission will examine her.

'War is good for business' is the 34th Rule of Acquisition, but Quark is not noticing it at all. His bar is almost empty now people are leaving the station in droves in fear of the Dominion. Only a drunk Klingon, Kozak, is left and he refuses to pay. He assaults Quark and dies while accidentally falling on his knife. When Quark sees curious crowds outside the bar, he gets a great idea. He decides to tell everyone he killed the Klingon in a great fight to increase business. Odo warns him this might be dangerous, but arrogantly Quark refuses to listen. First he gets a visit by Zadok's brother D'Ghor seeking confirmation he died an honorable death, then he has to confess the truth to widow Grilka. She kidnaps him and forces him to marry her to save the house of Kozak. Meanwhile Keiko has to close the school because all the Bajoran children left. Miles tries everything to cheer her up.

Odo has found his home on a rogue planet in the Omarion nebulae. A female shapeshifter tells they were once a race of explorers, that was always rejected by the 'solids', the ordinary human beings. She encourages him to learn about their ways so he will be ready for their manner of bonding via the Great Link. Kira in the meantime tries to send a message to Sisko, but finds out all outgoing frequencies are blocked by a subterranean device. Meanwhile Sisko and Bashir are on a runabout when they are being rescued by Dax and O'Brien. They appear to have made contact with the Founders and convinced them of their peaceful intentions. A grand peace meeting is already scheduled, one of the Founders is already on Deep Space Nine. Sisko starts having doubts about the agreement when he finds out the Romulans are excluded from the negotiations and the Jem'Hadar can do whatever they want on the station.

The crew of the station is preparing for the expected attack of the Jem'Hadar, but the prognoses are not looking good. Within two hours the station will be taken over. Suddenly a cloaked ship is detected very close to the station. They are being hailed by captain Sisko. He's on board of the Defiant, a prototype of a new class of starships, a warship specifically designed to fight the Borg. The ship is flawed, but equipped with cloaking technology borrowed from the Romulans. Sisko and Starfleet's idea is not to wait for the Jem'Hadar to attack, but to penetrate into the Dominion's territory to try to found the Founders and try to solve matters the diplomatic way.

Sisko wants to spend more quality time with Jake and encourages him to think of a science project. They decide to make a field trip to a planet in the Gamma Quadrant that's in a early stage of evolution. Then Jake wants to bring Nog along. He needs a good grade to stay in school. When Quark hears Nog is coming, he wants too. He's convinced he can turn back Sisko's decision to not let use him the station's monitors for advertising. After doing some initial research on the planet, they have a meal. With Jake and Nog away, an alien woman suddenly approaches the campfire. She shoots down Sisko with a telepathic weapon and claims she is on the run for the Jem'Hadar, soldiers of the Dominion. She advises Sisko and Quark to run, but it's too late. The three are taking captive by them.

Chief O'Brien is preparing for a vacation with his wife Keiko, but has a hard time to leave things in the hands of others. Just after Sisko orders him to disembark, he runs into an old friend. It's Raymond Boone, whom he served with on the Rutledge. He left Starfleet eight years ago and moved to a colony on the Cardassian side of the demilitarized zone. O'Brien hasn't much time to talk to him and leaves with his wife in a runabout. Barely underway a ship suddenly approaches. O'Brien is arrested by the Cardassians for a crime. They refuse to tell him what he did wrong and transport him to undergo a trial. After a painful preparation a Cardassian Juror, Archon Makbar, makes it absolutely clear his guilt is already established and the trial is only a formality. Odo manages to get on O'Brien's defense team as Nestor, while the crew on the station do their best to come up with useful information.

The election day for the new Kai is approaching and both Vedek Bareil and Vedek Winn are on the station. Bareil is especially interested in Kira's vote, Winn has a completely different agenda. She is awaiting the arrival of secretary Kubus Oak. He was special liaison between Cardassians and the Bajoran government. After the occupation the collaborator fled to Cardassia. Kira and Odo are determined to make sure he gets the proper sentence. Then suddenly Winn wants to leave the station with Oak. She accessed information about Prylar Bek, another Bajoran collaborator, who hanged himself after he gave away the location of a rebel base in the Kendra Valley. Winn tells her Kubus gave away the name of the person really responsible for the massacre: Vedek Bareil. Kira tries to find the truth.

Kira and Bashir are returning from the opening of a hospital on New Bajor in the Gamma Quadrant. Just before the runabout enters the wormhole, there's a sudden problem. Kira is able to solve it, but when they arrive in the Alpha Quadrant things seems to have changed. Deep Space Nine is once again orbiting Bajor and the runabout is entered by Klingons, who excuse themselves when they see Kira. It soon becomes clear the two have arrived in alternate universe. Klingons, Cardassians and Bajorans have formed an alliance against Earth and humans are forced to do slave labor on Deep Space Nine. The station is led by intendant Kira. She tells a certain Kirk traveled from the other side earlier. While Bashir is sent away to ore processing, intendant Kira seems to really like her other self.

Garak and Bashir are waiting in line in the mess hall when suddenly Bashir notices Garak is not feeling well. He seems to be having some kind of a seizure but refuses treatment. Bashir remains concerned, especially after he shows some weird behavior. He sees Garak doing a business transaction with Quark, getting himself drunk in the bar and finally collapsing. An examination shows he has an implant in his head. Garak has no other option than to tell the truth. He got secret information and to avoid giving it away the implant releases the pleasure hormone during interrogations. But to avoid depression he has kept the implant on for more than a year. It is now giving out and slowly killing him. While Bashir searches for a cure, Garak tells him contradicting stories about his past.

Sisko, Bashir and Kira have been taken captive by Cal Hudson. Once again the two commanding officers try to convince each other, but when Sisko refuses to join Hudson's cause, he stuns them. After returning to the station Sisko orders O'Brien to find Gul Dukat and decides not to tell Starfleet about Hudson. Meanwhile Odo has found out Quark's trade. He and Sisko interrogate the Ferengi and find out what he was selling. Then the Cardassian legate Parn arrives with a surprising message. Parn tells Central Command was indeed secretly smuggling weapons, but that this was the doing of Gul Dukat. Sisko and Kira don't believe it all and Sisko realizes that Hudson was telling the truth. Sisko aims for the best possible scenario: preventing a war, freeing Dukat and offering Hudson the possibility to return.

The Cardassian freighter Bok'Nor is blown up while leaving Deep Space Nine. It doesn't look like an accident. While both the Federation and Bajor expect retaliation by the Cardassians, they haven't even made contact. Then Commander Calvin Hudson arrives to discuss the tense situation. He is attach? to the Federation colonies in the Demilitarised Zone and a good friend of Sisko. Hudson tries to convince Sisko giving away territory to the Cardassians was a bad idea and that the Federation colonists on the Cardassian side are abandoned. Sisko still believes the treaty was a reasonable compromise. When he returns to his quarters, he is surprised to find Gul Dukat. Gul Dukat tells Federation citizens were responsible for the attack and wants to show him something in the Demilitarised Zone. After arriving the two receive a distress call from a Federation merchant vessel under attack by Cardassians.

Quark calls in the help of Odo to remove an old drunk Klingon keeping a holosuite occupied. His name is Kor and he is visited by Koloth, another old Klingon, who leaves him again when he finds out Kor is drunk. When Dax hears about it, she immediately recognizes their names. They were friends of Curzon Dax and when the two are joined by yet another Klingon, Kang, Jadzia knows why they're on the station. In the past Curzon made a blood oath with the three to kill the Albino, a bandit who was defeated by them. He swore revenge and killed their three first born sons, including Dax' godson. For a lifetime they tried to find him and Kang now finally located him. Koloth and Kang however are disappointed to discover Curzon is dead. They don't want to take Jadzia along, while she feels she must fulfill the oath. She tries to convince Koloth and Kang to change their decision.

A heavily damaged Cardassian ship approaches the station and is tossed in. On board is a certain professor Natima Lang and two of her students. She wants to leave as soon as possible and to avoid problems with the Bajorans, Sisko advises her to stick around the Promenade. When Lang enters Quark's bar, he seems very happy to see her. The feeling is not mutual however, she hits him in the face. The two once had a relationship and Quark tries everything to get back into her favor. When the three Cardassians see Garak they freak out and want to leave as soon as possible. In the meantime the crew of Deep Space Nine find out Natima's shuttle wasn't in a meteor storm as she told them, but hit by Cardassian disruptors. Natima tells they're part of a movement that wants to remove the military from the government. They're now fugitives and on the run.

Arjin, a Trill candidate to undergo the joining, comes to Deep Space Nine to be Dax's initiate. She has to mentor him and make recommendations if he's worthy to be joined. Arjin seems not happy to be assigned to Dax, knowing what mentor Curzon did to Jadzia. He's trying to do everything according to the normal expectations to please her, but is disappointed to find out she's not an ordinary Trill. On their first away mission in the Gamma Quadrant they accidentally hit a subspace pocket. A strange protoplasmic substance attaches itself to the nacelle. After investigating it on Deep Space Nine, Dax finds out it is a proto-universe. It's expanding and slowly, but surely replacing the present universe. Meanwhile O'Brien and Kira try to battle an infestation of Cardassian Voles. They bite through everything and become more and more a serious threat to the station.

Dax has taken a runabout to investigate a particle field in the Gamma Quadrant and Odo has come along in the hope to find out more about his origins. Dax is surprised to find extremely rare omicron particles. On the surface of a planet they try to investigate a device releasing the particles, but get arrested by protector Colyus of a Yaderan colony. He suspect Odo and Dax have something to do with the sudden disappearance of 22 people. They are able to convince him of their innocence and offer to help in the investigation. With Odo gone from the station, Kira keeps a close eye on the activities of Quark, much to his dismay. Then Vedek Bareil unexpectedly visits the station and wants to spend time with her. Meanwhile Sisko tries to convince Jake to take up a job in engineering to prepare for the Academy. He's convinced that Jake will want to go there.

Sisko and O'Brien are surveying the area surrounding the wormhole to look for habitable planets. They are stunned to find there's already a colony present in the Orellius system. After beaming down they find out none of their technology is working anymore, they can't beam back. It seems a duonetic field is preventing all EM activity. The villagers are survivors of a personnel transport that crashed down on the surface ten years ago. Alixus, a woman that seems in charge of the group of people, tells of their pride in achieving to survive without using any technology. While Sisko suspects a rescue party will come soon, Alixus is convinced they're here to stay for a while and urges them to adapt to the group and abandon technology.

O'Brien is on his way to the planet Parada to warn them about something and is chased by the crew of Deep Space Nine through the wormhole. In his log he tells what happened. Deep Space Nine was supposed to host peace talks between the Paradans and a rebel faction and O'Brien was supposed to make sure the security to be top notch. He immediately noticed something strange when Keiko and Molly didn't seem to be themselves. In engineering, he found out another engineer was ordered by Sisko to already start work on the security measures. Sisko told him to concentrate on the repair of the upper pylons and ordered him to undergo a very extensive medical examination. O'Brien especially got suspicious after he found out he lost his level 1 security clearance after trying to review the logs of the security personnel.

Bashir and O'Brien are in a laboratory in orbit of T'Lani III. They are helping the T'Lani and Kellerun to try to destroy dangerous biological weapons called 'harvesters'. They were used by both species in a devastating war that lasted for a long time. Recently they signed peace and now they want to destroy any reference to the harvesters to ensure they will never be used again. Bashir and O'Brien manage to neutralize one of the harvesters and both species are very pleased. They even invite them to a celebration party. When the last harvester is about to be destroyed, suddenly two armed Kellerun enter the laboratory and start shooting everyone. Bashir and O'Brien are only barely able to escape, but have nowhere to go. O'Brien starts repairing a transmitter. Suddenly he gets very cold. Meanwhile the T'Lani and Kellerun ambassador travel to DS9. They bring the news of the passing of Bashir and O'Brien in an accident.

Odo gets a visit from Dr. Mora Pol, the scientist who researched him in a laboratory on Bajor. Mora still seems to be unhappy with Odo's decision to leave for Deep Space Nine and Odo is still not happy with the way the scientist treated him. Mora gets him interested to resume work on finding his origins when he tells him a Bajoran science probe recently scanned a planet in the Gamma Quadrant and found DNA patterns looking just like Odo's. Sisko agrees to let Odo, Mora, Dax and the Bajoran doctor Weld take a runabout. On the planet they find a mysterious pillar and Dr. Weld finds the life-form the team is looking for. They decide to beam the pillar and the life-form on board and take them to DS9.

Martus, an El-Aurian, tries to con a lady but gets arrested by Odo for conning a couple earlier. In his cell he meet Cos, a dying alien with a strange gambling device. Cos tells he had a string of bad luck. After Cos dies, he takes the device. Shortly after he hears the couple decided not to press charges and is released. He tries to sell the thing to Quark, but he is not overly interested. Feeling very lucky decides to become Quark's rival and opens another casino on the Promenade. Meanwhile O'Brien has constructed a racquetball court to get some physical exercise. He finds out Dr. Bashir plays it too. He even was captain of the team of his medical school. O'Brien is no match for Bashir, much to his frustration. He keeps challenging Bashir. Bashir fears for O'Briens health and tries to stop playing.

Deep Space Nine beams aboard four aliens that have just traveled through the wormhole. The universal translator has a hard time picking up their language, but the four are finally able to identify themselves as Skrreans. Their leader, Haneek, tells they are a race that has been conquered by the T-Rogorans, who in turn have been conquered over by the Dominion. Most of their leaders were killed. Now three million Skrreans are adrift and looking for refuge. She is the first to find they 'Eye of the Universe'. According to Skrrean legends their mythical home Kentanna, a sorrowed world, is just behind the Eye. Sisko and Kira agree to help the Skreaans and soon hundreds of them visit the station. While Sisko thinks he found a suitable planet to relocate them, Draylon II, Haneek makes a discovery of her own.

Sisko wants to know her secret and asks Odo to investigate. Meanwhile Dax is working with professor Gideon Seyetik. He's famous for his terraforming projects, but thinks he's good at everything. He's on Deep Space Nine to prepare for his most ambitious project. Seyetik wants to re-ignite the dead star Epsilon 119. He invites the crew over for a dinner his wife prepared.

Quark is on Bajor negotiating with a woman, Pallra. She wants him to retrieve a strongbox from the station, hidden behind a panel in the chemist's room. A man is secretly listening to their conversation. With the help of Rom Quark has no problem finding the box, but can't resist his curiosity and opens it. He finds a list of Bajoran names. Before he is able to copy it, he gets shot by the man, who steals the list. While Dr. Bashir tries to save Quark's life, Odo questions Rom. He tells about the chemist's room and Odo is immediately reminded of a murder case several years ago. He was forced by Gul Dukat to investigate the murder of the owner of a shop, Vaatrick. His wife Pallra accused a mistress of the murder.

As his first task he must negotiate with the Dosi to acquire 10.000 vats of tulaberry wine. Zek believes the wine can be the key to opening the markets in the quadrant. He tries to convince Sisko and Kira to have a conference on DS9. Pel manages to put himself forward as assistant of Quark. He seems unusually devoted to Quark.

The crew on DS9 is preparing for the arrival of ensign Melora Pazlar. She's the first Elaysian to join Starfleet and used to a very low gravity environment. As a result she hardly can't move in a normal environment and needs to use a special wheelchair. Melora is very on herself and doesn't want to accept any more help than strictly necessary. She wants to take a runabout on her own to make maps of the Gamma quadrant, but Sisko demands Dax will join her. Bashir takes more than a passing interest and invites her to a Klingon restaurant. Meanwhile Quark is about to do a very lucrative transaction on 42 very rare rings of Paltriss with the trader Ashlock, when suddenly an old acquaintance of him drops in. It's Fallit Kot and Quarks seems not too happy. Kot announces he's on the station to kill Quark and the Ferengi tries everything to convince him to do otherwise.

Dr. Bashir is talking with Cardassian tailor Garak when suddenly a Bajoran man with a Cardassian boy enters the bar. Garak tries to approach the boy but he seems very afraid and bites him. Rugal is a war orphan left behind by the Cardassians after the occupation as many others and was adopted by Bajorans. Just a minute after Bashir tells Sisko, he gets contacted by Gul Dukat. He seems very concerned about the orphans on Bajor and wants to rectify the situation. He is concerned the Bajorans are manipulating them into thinking the Cardassians are bad and asks for an investigation. While Rugal's Bajoran father tells he's been treating the boy well and Rugal seems to prefer staying on Bajor, an alien, Zolan, contradicts that story. Meanwhile Garak thinks the situation is a bit too coincidental and starts his own private investigation with Bashir.

A plasma storm is approaching the station and almost all personnel has been evacuated, only a skeleton crew remains. Suddenly a distress call from a cargo ship comes in and Sisko decides to respond. A tractor beam pulls it in, but it's no cargo ship at all. Two Klingons, a Trill and a female Khefkan overpower Odo and O'Brien and then the rest of the crew. The Trill, Verad, is unjoined and seems very frustrated about that. He thinks is life is mediocre and wants Dax's symbiont. Bashir is forced to perform the operation that will mean Dax's life will end soon.

Admiral Chekote has told Sisko he can't get involved in an internal Bajoran conflict and has to evacuate the station, but Sisko himself has no intentions of leaving. He feels he's come to care about what happens to the Bajorans and tries to muster support from the crew of the station. They will try to delay the takeover as long as possible and set up a resistance until the Cardassian involvement is revealed. As there's still no communications possible to Bajor, Kira sees no other alternative then to bring the evidence to the Chamber of Ministers, but all the runabouts are in use for the evacuation. Li Nalas thinks there might still be raiders intact on the Lunar V base and Kira and Dax take a look.

Soon she finds out this life is nothing for her, she's getting restless. Then Bareil shows her the monastery is in possession of one the Orbs of the Prophets. Meanwhile Quark has some important information for Odo. He has heard the Kressari, normally botanical DNA traders, have been supplying weapons to The Circle.

Quark receives a Bajoran earring from a smuggler. She tells she received it on Cardassia IV. It needs to be delivered to Bajor and any Bajoran will immediately recognize it. Quark brings it to Kira. The earring is that of Li Nalas, one of the greatest war heroes of the resistance. She thinks he is being held captive on Cardassia IV and asks Sisko for a runabout since she doesn't get any support from the Bajoran government. Kira tells Sisko she believes he will be the leader Bajor is in desperate need of ever since Kai Opaka left. Bajor is on the verge of civil war as the terrorist group The Circle is getting more and more power. The Circle strives to get rid of all aliens on Bajor and they have extended their activities to the station already. Odo finds their logo graffiti-ed on a wall.

Keiko is teaching the station's children about the wormhole. Suddenly Vedek Winn, one of the most important religious leaders of the Bajorans and a possible candidate to become the next Kai, arrives. Both Keiko and Winn are not willing to give in and Sisko travels to Bajor to get the support of Vedek Bareil. Meanwhile chief O'Brien finds an interlock is missing from his toolkit. Together with a new engineer, Neela from Bajor, he starts looking for it. They find it back in a corridor together with the remains of ensign Aquino. It looks like an accident, but O'Brien has his doubts.

Kira herself helped liberate the camp and she knows of the atrocities camp commander Gul Darhe'el committed. She is determined to convict Marritza for war crimes. The Cardassian first denies having Kallo-Nohra, then claims he was only a filing clerk. With Bajor wanting to convict him and Cardassia wanting his release, Sisko faces a tough decision. Then photographic evidence arrives.

Kira has found out a Valerian ship, known for transporting dolamide, used in Cardassian weapons, to Bajor, is about to dock at DS9. She is convinced the Valerians are still trading the stuff and wants to deny them, but Sisko disagrees with her. He is only prepared to let Kira take action when she provides evidence. Meanwhile a Klingon ship returns early from a mission in the gamma quadrant. It explodes in front of the station and a Klingon who managed to beam aboard dies almost instantly. Odo tries to find out what happened, but after he experiences some weird pain that causes his head to split in two, he notices something has happened to the crew. All over the ship people seem very adamant to choose sides between Kira and Sisko. It looks there's a mutiny as Kira has plans to get rid of Sisko and tries to get as much support as possible.

Dr. Bashir has to take care of a couple of ambassadors visiting Deep Space Nine to take a look at the wormhole. In Quark's bar an ambassador from Betazed, Lwaxana Troi, gets robbed of her brooch. Odo is able to find the culprit and suddenly Troi is very interested in him, romantically. He doesn't like it. Meanwhile O'Brien is totally fed up with the Cardassian computer. It doesn't do the job right and gives opinions on every one of his commands. He suggests installing a new one from scratch. Then an unidentified object appears from the gamma quadrant through the wormhole. It looks like a probe, but has a very sophisticated computer. After downloading information from it, O'Brien notices the station's computer seems to be working better. Then several malfunctions appear, leaving Odo and Lwaxana Troi stuck in a turbolift.

The crew detects an unusual energy reading; elevated thoron emissions near the Denorios belt. Sisko and Dax think it might have something to do with the increased traffic since the wormhole was found and Dax investigates to find out if it poses any danger to the station. Meanwhile chief O'Brien is telling the story of Rumpelstiltskin to his daughter Molly and after he leaves Molly tells him the fairy character appeared in her room. To his astonishment Molly tells the truth, he faces Rumpelstiltskin. All of the sudden all over the station people secret imaginations are appearing in the open, causing chaos. Quark is escorted by two beautiful ladies and seems very happy until he finds out everybody is winning with dabo. Bashir finds a Dax that is in love with him and baseball player Buck Bokai appears before Sisko. Odo must work in the snow to keep the promenade safe.

The Federation is helping the Bajorans to tap the molten core of the moon Jeraddo. This will provide much-needed energy for hundreds of thousands of Bajoran citizens, but will make the moon uninhabitable. All 47 known inhabitants have been evacuated, but Dax still detects one life sign. Major Kira Nerys beams down to investigate and meets three people, farmer Mullibok and two mute helpers. Mullibok invites her to dinner and makes it perfectly clear he has no intention of leaving. Although he is very stubborn Kira starts to grow fond of the man. Meanwhile Nog overhears his uncle Quark punishing his father for buying 5.000 wrappings of yamok sauce, loved by Cardassians but hated by the rest of the universe. Secretly Nog and Jake try to sell the stuff for bars of latinum. They contact a Lissepian trader, but he only has self-sealing stem bolts to offer.

Much to his dismay chief O'Brien is ordered by Sisko to escort Bashir to a Bajoran village. He is to help out with a medical emergency that endangers the entire community. After arriving there's only one person sick, the Sirah. He seems very pleased with the arrival of O'Brien and designates him as 'the one'. It soon becomes clear the Sirah is the only person capable of defeating the Dal'Rok, a terrible monster that attacks every year after the harvest and doesn't show up on tricorder. Meanwhile on DS9, Sisko tries to negotiate between the Paqu and the Navot, two rivaling Bajoran factions. Ninety years ago they agreed to a river being the border between their lands, but after the Cardassians diverted the river, Paqu territory became bigger. The leader of the Paqu, Tetrarch Varis Sul, is a young girl and Nog and Jake try to impress her.

Kai Opaka, the spiritual leader of the Bajorans announces a visit to DS9. She doesn't say much, but makes it implicitly clear she's interested in the wormhole. Sisko, Bashir, Kira take a runabout to show her the wormhole and pass through it to the other side. They receive a strange distress call coming from an unknown source. Sisko wants to return home, but Opaka tells him they should not take notice of her. The signal leads to a mysteries satellite network, which releases an energy burst disabling the runabout. They make a violent crash-down on a moon, Opaka dies almost instantly. It isn't long before the three are picked up by a group of unfriendly locals, the Ennis. They say they are put as prisoners on the moon after a long war with the Nol-Ennis, a war that is continued on the moon. When the Nol attack something strange happens.

A Mindaran ship has arrived with the brothers Ah-Kel and Ro-Kel, known as smugglers, and a mysterious individual, Croden, has been spending quite a lot of time in Quark's bar. He is from the Gamma quadrant and there are reports of them having extensive conversations. Odo doesn't trust it and he;s right. He catches Quark negotiating with the Mindarans about an artifact that was probably stolen. He can't stop Croden however from killing Ro-Kel while trying to steal the artifact. While Ah-Kel vows revenge, Croden tells Odo something that really piques his interest. He mentions he has seen shape-shifters before and calls them Changelings. Croden tells they once lived on his planet, but were driven out, but he encountered them again on a secret planet. Odo is skeptical, but gets interested when Croden shows an artifact that contains a living shape-shifting fluid.

The leader of the Ferengi, Grand Nagus Zek and his son Krax suddenly appear in Quark's bar. Quark and his brother Rom are in awe and quickly arrange for everything Zek needs, including precious time in the holosuites. Zek praises Quark's business instinct for opening a bar near a wormhole that wasn't even discovered yet, but Quark fears for the worst. He is convinced Zek wants to take over his bar for free and the he won't take no for an answer. Zek has different plans however. He tells Quark a conference will be held in the bar where Ferengi politicians will discuss how to exploit the business opportunities in the Gamma Quadrant. Zek tells the members he won't be the Ferengi leading the Alliance into the Gamma Quadrant and will appoint his successor.

Deep Space Nine is expecting a visit from a species from the Gamma Quadrant, the Wadi, to make official first contact. Commander Sisko and other high ranking officers put on their special uniforms, but the Wadi don't seem to be interested in speaking with them. They have heard from the Vulcans Quark is hosting games and want to be taken there immediately. Quark is very pleased when he sees their precious gems to be at stake on the dabo tables, but not for long. The Wadi keep winning and winning and Quark sees no other solution than cheating. The Wadi find out however and force him to play one of their own games, chula. Quark has to move four pawns along 'chaps' and is promised a lot of gems if he succeeds. Suddenly Sisko, Kira, Dax and Bashir find themselves off the station in a puzzle labyrinth. Odo tries to find them.

Deep Space Nine expects a deuridium shipment for Kobliads. They are a dying race who need the material to extend their life. Kira and Bashir respond to a distress call of a Kobliad ship on fire. On board they meet Ty Kajada. She's escorting a dangerous prisoner, Rao Vantika. Ty claims he set the ship on fire, something he has managed to do many times. Bashir wants to rescue him against her advice, but is unable to do so. He confirms Rao died, but Kajada isn't convinced. She claims Vantika faked his death many times and she has the feeling this time isn't different. No one on Deep Space Nine believes her, until suddenly all memory banks are purged. Meanwhile a new security officer, George Primmin, is assigned. Odo dislikes him and the feeling seems mutual.

A group of aliens follows Jadzia Dax and then overpower her. They try to take her of the ship and commander Sisko is only barely able to stop the ship from flying off. Their leader introduces himself as Ilon Tandro from Klaestron IV. He has a warrant for Jadzia, as Curzon Dax is accused of murdering his father, a famous general, thirty years ago and of treason. While Sisko tries to stall her extradition by calling in a Bajoran juror, Dax seems not even willing to defend herself. Sisko tries to convince the judge Curzon and Jadzia are not the same person and sends Odo over to Klaestron IV to investigate.

The runabout Ganges returns to Deep Space Nine in serious trouble. The ship has no power, the hatch can't be opened and oxygen is running out. Also there seems to be an extra person on board. O'Brien is able to open the hatch and recognizes the guest as Vash, a corrupt archaeologist, from his time on Enterprise. She tells she has been traveling in the Gamma Quadrant for two years and has collected artifacts there. O'Brien meanwhile can't find anything wrong with the ship other than the power was being drained. Then the same malfunction appears on DS9. Dangerous blackouts are hitting the station. Meanwhile Vash gets a unexpected visit in her quarters. It's Q, the omnipotent being and he seems upset Vash left him. He wants her back.

The ship has severe engine trouble and its pilot seems very nervous and reluctant to accept any help. Finally O'Brien convinces him to come on board. He introduces himself as Tosk and he apparently comes from a very different culture as he understands nothing of the ways of the Alpha Quadrant. He claims the wormhole caused the ship's problems. O'Brien seems to really like the guy, but senses quickly he has a secret. He also finds out Tosk lied, discovering his ship has weapons damage. Then Tosk is caught trying to open a weapons locker by Odo.

Cardassian technology isn't as good as it seems. Chief O'Brien is very very busy as systems all over the station are failing. While Trying to free people stuck in an airlock and promising a ship's captain a repair crew by the end of the day, Dax wants him to repair a malfunction in the lab. Then he must repair the navigational computer for Kira, only to be ordered by Sisko to make sure he gets good coffee by fixing the replicators. A while later all of the sudden O'Brien has become aphasic. Bashir has no clue what happened, there seems to be nothing wrong physically with him. Then out of the blue Dax also turns aphasic, right in front of his eyes. All over the ship people are displaying the symptoms, it seems an epidemic caused by a virus.

Life seems to be slowly becoming normal on the station. Bashir tries to make advances to Dax, Jake makes friends with Nog and chief O'Brien is having an argument with his wife Keiko. As a botanist she feels useless on the station and doesn't think the environment is good enough for their daughter Molly growing up. Meanwhile Odo encounters a familiar face on the Promenade: the Bajoran smuggler Ibudan. He's considered a hero by the Bajorans, but Odo thinks differently. He saw him let a child die because the parents couldn't afford the medicine and when Ibudan killed a Cardassian he turned him in. When Ibudan is murdered during a massage in the holodeck, all evidence points to Odo.

While the last Cardassian on the station, tailor Garak tries to become friends with Dr. Bashir, a Bajoran vessel approaches the station at high speed, followed by a Cardassian ship. The Bajoran, Tahna Los, gets beamed onto DS9 just in time before his ship is blown up and asks for asylum. Benjamin Sisko seems reluctant, but major Kira Nerys knows him. He's a member of the Kon Ma, a terrorist organization fighting Cardassia, but also accused of crimes against Bajorans. Upon his promise that he no longer wants to be a Kon Ma, Sisko decides not to hand him over to the Cardassians, while Kira works on getting amnesty from the government for Kon Ma Members. Then two female Klingon outcasts, Lursa and B'Etor arrive at the station.

Commander Benjamin Sisko, whose life has changed after his wife was killed in the battle with the Borg at Wolf 359, is to take command of the space station Deep Space Nine near Bajor. The station was built by the Cardassians, but recently taken over by the Bajorans after a very oppressive occupation of their planet was ended. Sisko has one hell of a task before him. The station is in ruins after the Cardassians stripped it, merchants are preparing to leave and its Bajoran commander major Kira Nerys seems to dislike the Federation. When Sisko gets to talk with Kai Opaka, the Bajoran religious leader, she tells him he is the long awaited emissary and shows him a 'Tear of the Prophet', a mysterious looking orb that enables him to relive memories. Kai Opaka tells the other orbs were stolen by the Cardassians looking for the Celestial Temple. She urges the DS9 commander to find it before they do. After science officer Jadzia Dax, a Trill, thinks she has found the possible location, she and Sisko make a startling discovery.
