Picard grants him a visit to a Klingon outpost, where the boy gets a taste for Klingon fight training. They also become the target of a murder attempt, which K'Mtar, a trusted adviser of Worf's house, ascribes to the surviving sisters of the rivaling D. house, who are tracked down, involved in illegal mining, but deny and suggest a mystery killer. Wesley is on leave from Starfleet Academy, but gloomy, moody and even rude. The Federation has concluded a peace treaty with the Cardassians, which reassigns several planets, including one where a tribe of American Indians relocated twenty years ago. Picard grudgingly accepts the assignment to relocate the colonists, who refuse to be uprooted a second time in two centuries. Their chief even claims that Picard is there to acquit his ancestor's part in a slaughter of his tribe 23 generations ago. The Cardassians arrive six weeks early for a 'legal' survey of the colony, stirring resistance. This is fueled by Wesley, who accepted an invitation from an Indian, who claims to have seen him during his vision quest, to undertake his own. It leads to Wesley's late dad, telling him that it's time to take a different path from his. Picard tries to get through to Cardassian commander Gul Evek. Wesley makes a major discovery and choice.

Geordi assigns reluctant engineer Lieutenant Reg Barclay, whose idea it was, to help him bridge both ships' transport systems and join Riker's away team, but after a deconstruction phobia-caused hesitation and anxiety counseling with Troi, Barclay goes later, alone. Riker's team finds victims of an explosion, which may fit the Ferengi report Picard receives of an allegedly Cardassian attack. While Barclay beams back, he notices an eel-shaped entity which floats to him and touches his left arm in the phased matter stream, but a full transporter diagnostic finds no problem, so he fears to be a victim of incurable transporter psychosis, although none was reported on modern models for years. Geordi realizes either would fit with the same ionic fluctuation phenomenon suggested by in se acceptable abnormal transporter readings. Worried about Barclay's mental condition, Troi orders him to take a leave, during which he apparently experiences some physical transformation of his possibly infected, so he decides to do another transporter test during which the 'eel' reappears. While the Enterprise is in a star-base, Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge gets a very special visitor, brilliant engineering designer Dr. Leah Brahms, who he feels to know almost intimately as a 'hologram version' of herself with 'whom' he bonded. However the real Brahms proves icy and arrogantly unwilling to consider any of Gordi's empirical findings could conceivably stand against her theoretically impermeable truth. They take on the challenge to collaborate and learn to know each-other better, but when Gordi shows her his hologram version of her, Brahms feels almost pornographically 'abused', one prejudiced insult too many for him. Meanwhile Picard, his bridge officers and Dr. Crusher have a very different problem, a strange life form which approaches, but dies, however is found to have 'given birth' to a baby version inside its corps, which must be separated to stand a chance of survival and contact with the Federation. When that succeeds, 'junior' instinctively identifies the Enterprise as its mother, and locks on, draining energy trough the hull, which is only safely sustainable for a few hours; only after Gordi and Brahms join the bridge, its relevant normal mode of life in an asteroid field is revealed and the duo comes up with an idea...

Commander William Riker has been on an acculturation mission under an alias for months on the Arkonian planet, surgically altered to appear like a local, but he gets badly wounded, beyond their medical skills because his internal organs are unknown to them. Captain Jean-Luc Picard decides to speed up his official diplomatic approach, formally the First Contact, and intercede on Riker's behalf, but they are told by a fascinated open-minded Atkonian scientist that her planet's culture is particularly xenophobic so they reject any alien being as being unequal to them. The Arkonian government keeps the matter secret but is internally divided: while the chancellor Durken is in favor of Riker's release without the people finding out and establishing friendly relations with the Federation, his powerful security minister Krola is prepared to go to any length to preserve their traditional way of life, so he finds Riker and fakes his own murder....

During leave time aboard, Picard obliges a personal promise to Guinan by playing parts in an Al Capone period gangster mystery story, but soon a mysterious energy source takes precedence. It creates a small, unstable local wormhole, causing everybody to be unconscious, presumably for just half a minute according to the instruments. However strange changes are observed, such as spores showing a full day's growth and the ship is even off course, near a planet of another class. Doubts are inevitable, even about Data, as Jordy finds only they two were able to circumvent the computer security program preventing the clock manipulation which is the only logical explanation, and Data is in perfect working order. Jordi proves that the planet image before the black-out is a fake altered from memory banks, only Data could have switched them and staged an apparent wormhole; Data claims to be unable to verify and should be court-martialed, probably the end of his Starfleet career, but why would he accept such risk? A settled fracture in Dorf's hand proves someone must have been awake. Picard concludes Data must have had a compelling reason to lie and disobey his orders, presumably answering someone else's, and indeed, when the ship returns to the site of the incident, in the system of the Paxans ...

Picard is told she is known by many names in various systems, all frightening and almost almighty, but he refuses to believe she's the planet's version of The Devil, and decides to challenge her legal claim. more
An urgent distress signal, leads the U.S.S. Enterprise to save a lost colony about to be destroyed by stellar flares. The Bringloidi colony - which consists of over 200 humans and their animals. - had rejected modern science and was living a pre-industrial Irish life. The entire population is transported to the Enterprise. Piccard learns that the original, colony ship was shared with a science-oriented group. The other lost colony is located near by. The enterprise crew learns that the entire Mariposan society is composed of clones made from the five crew members who survived their ship's crash landing. Unfortunately, due to Replicative Fading, they will soon be unable to clone themselves and their society will die. The U.S.S. Enterprise officers are asked to donate their DNA so they can clone new citizens - which is refused. The Mariposans then render Riker and Dr Pulaski unconscious and take the DNA. Upon returning to the U.S.S. Enterprise, Dr. Pulaski discovers that both she and Riker are missing cells so they beam down and destroy their developing clones. Picard suggests that the two colony merge and breed naturally. Initially reluctant, both sides agree.

The Enterprise is investigating the Drema region of space, where the planets are tearing themselves apart. During Data's investigation of signals he becomes pen pals with a little girl named Sarjenka who lives on Drema IV. When Data discovers that her planet is in danger of imminent destruction, he informs the Captain that he has been breaking the Prime Directive by talking to someone from a planet without space travel. Meanwhile, William Riker puts Wesley Crusher in charge of the mineral surveys to determine what's causing the quakes and volcanic eruptions on Drema IV in order to further Wesley's education as a Starfleet ensign. Wesley is talked out of ordering a time-consuming analysis by the older crew members under his command. After talking to Riker, Wesley gains the confidence to order the tests, which quickly reveal the cause of the geological disturbances, and Picard agrees to help save the planet. After Data loses his connection to the girl, he beams down to the planet to find her and returns her to the ship. The Enterprise saves the planet, and after the girl's mind is wiped of the memories of Data, she is beamed back to her now-safe planet.
