more
Mai, Ty Lee and Azula show up in this episode. Mai - who is in love with Zuko - is the warden's niece. The Warden tortures the prisoners who were captured during their escape attempt, and learns that one of his guards is a fake. The prisoner who gave the information does not betray Sakka. Zuko confronts Mai and tells her that he is "trying to save the Fire Nation" - she replies that he's a traitor. Sakka and his father think up a plan to escape from the island via the cable car - using the Warden as a hostage. While the tortured prisoner creates a diversion by starting a riot in the prison yard, Sakka, Zuko, Haruto and Suki kidnap the Warden and make their way to the cable car. While the cable car is in motion, Azula and Ty Lee attempt to stop it. A battle ensues. When the guards on the island - ordered by a shout from the Warden - jam the cable car works and attempt to cut the cable so the gondola will fall into the boiling lake, Azula and Ty Lee flee the gondola - but Mai intervenes to save the escapees. She assails the guards jamming the cable car works, saying "I'm saving the one I love", and escape is a success. The escapees are still trapped on the volcano, but find Azula's war balloon. They use it to return to Aang and the other young warriors who are hole up in the Northern Air Temple.

The Boiling Rock: Part 1
Sakka and Zuko take Zuko's war...
more
Sakka and Zuko take Zuko's war balloon to The Boiling Rock, described by Zuko as "the most secure prison in the Fire Nation." It is a structure located in the center of a volcano, an island surrounded by a lake of boiling water. Their purpose is to find Sakka's father, Hakoda, and free him. Instead they find Suki, a Kyoshi warrior, and Sakka's girlfriend. She helped navigate Aang's group and some refugees through the Serpent's Pass - and actually saved Toph from drowning after Katara's ice bridge was smashed by the serpent. Dressed as Fire Nation Guards, Zuko and Sakka develop a plan to escape from the prison. Working together to a common end, they learn to trust and appreciate each other's viewpoints and judgments. Just as they are about to escape with several prisoners, they learn that Sakka's father might be among a group of prisoners arriving the next day. Sakka, Zuko and Suki abandon their own escape and stay in the prison so they can free Hakoda if the possibility arises. The escaping prisoners are caught, and Hakoda emerges from the cable car gondola as the last prisoner in the transport.

The Desert
Aang, Katara, Sokka and Toph escape...
more
Aang, Katara, Sokka and Toph escape the library to face the desert without the benefit of Aang's flying bison, Appa. The group knows they must get the information they obtained from the library about the upcoming solar eclipse to earth kingdom capital of Bah Sing Se as it could very well make the difference in the ongoing war with the Fire Nation. Aang, who has always felt somewhat isolated by the realization that he is indeed the last air bender, considers Appa and Momo his only connections to his previous 100-year ago world. When Appa is stolen by sand benders Aang is visibly devastated and without direction or hope. Katara really shines in this episode as she must deal with Aang's despair, Sokka's cactus-induced hallucinations and Toph's lack of support or good ideas to solve their dilemma as she too feels they are just trapped in a 'giant bowl of sand pudding.' The highlight of this episode is when Aang finally confronts the sand benders who Toph recognizes as those who stole Appa. A showdown ensues and Sokka, Toph and the sand benders flee for their lives in fear of seeing Aang transform his rage and pain into the 'Avatar State.' Despite the apparent danger Katara remains in the whirlwind of sand unshaken. Again we see the growing 'understanding' between the Katara and Aang continue to develop. Katara trusts Aang enough to know he will not hurt her in the 'Avatar State' and Aang trusts Katara enough to let his defenses down to be vulnerable but only with her. Katara pulls Aang back and he returns sobbing quietly in her arms. Meanwhile Uncle Iroh and Prince Zuko successfully evade two groups seeking their capture as Fire Nation fugitives. Through Iroh's membership in the "Order of the White Lotus" they secure safe passage to Bah Sing Se to 'hide in plain sight' as refugees.
