Dexter returns home and tells Debra what happened with Vogel. He wants to go after Saxon and Debra plans to help, though she'll be going through proper channels at work. Debra leaves the room and Hanna arrives with an itinerary. He says Vogel's death doesn't change their plan but he needs to find Saxon in the two days before they leave.
Dexter has Sylvia Prado sell his apartment and she is confident it will get numerous offers.
Masuka tells Dexter he spent the entire night at Vogel's place and came up empty on prints or trace evidence. Online Dexter finds a hospital he thinks might be Saxon's kill spot.
Dexter is called into the interrogation room where Quinn is questioning Saxon. He says he's there to clear his name in Cassie's murder. Dexter takes a DNA swab and Saxon leaves. Dexter finds Debra unpacking her stuff and tells her about Saxon. Dexter tells her this will help them pin down Saxon's true identity. He says he wants him taken care of and doesn't care how it happens.
While looking for supplies in Quinn's desk Debra finds that he hasn't gotten rid of the engagement ring.
At the hospital Dexter finds Saxon's kill room. Harry thinks Dexter should stake out the building. Dexter says he doesn't have time, he needs Saxon dead soon, regardless of who kills him. Dexter finds a laptop containing everything Saxon downloaded from Vogel's computer, as well as all of Saxon's kills.
Clayton swings by Debra's desk and asks about a person signing into the ER with Harrison using her name and address. Debra claims it was her.
After Vogel's service Matthews suggest they go for a drink. At the bar Matthews tells Dexter Miami Metro will always be his home. He orders him to stick around and have a few more drinks. Masuka apologizes to Nikki for getting worked up over the weed thing. Quinn talks to Dexter about getting back together with Debra, essentially asking for his blessing. Dexter is fine with it. Sylvia calls with word there is a cash offer. Angel brings everybody together at the bar and proposes a toast for Dexter and Harrison.
Dexter arrives at the apartment and sees that Saxon is the one making the offer. Inside he asks if Dexter can show him the apartment and Sylvia leaves them alone. Saxon proposes the two of them walk away from each other and they live their separate lives. He gave his mother a choice to pick him. When she didn't he needed to kill her for catharsis. Saxon promises Dexter that if he doesn't agree to the proposal he'll come after his family. Dexter agrees to the deal, but via voiceover we know Dexter is still planning to kill Saxon.
Clayton goes to see Elway and says he thinks Debra has Hannah at her place. He wants Elway to help him by looking around.
Elway shows up at Debra's place with some of her personal items. He says he wants to talk and walks inside without waiting for an invite. She rudely asks him to get lost. There is a storm on the way and Debra thinks Dexter should leave with Hannah. He is insistent Hannah go ahead.

Quinn gets the report that Saxon's DNA proves he was Vogel's son.
Debra drops by Dexter's place with food and fills him in on Saxon. Dexter wants her to leave, saying he's "expecting company." She locks the door and says nothing will prevent her from having one more night with Dexter.
Clayton's team and Elway search Debra's place. They don't find anything incriminating but Elway sees what looks like Hannah's search for plane tickets.
Debra expresses concern that nobody will be there for her if she falls apart. Dexter thinks she's strong enough to handle anything that happens on her own. She points out that the code wasn't the only reason he was a good brother. She turns on the TV and sees that Dexter has forced Saxon's hand with the video.
While pumping gas Saxon sees that his face is all over the TV. He mutters "f'n Dexter" and drives off.
Saxon breaks into Dexter's place. He sneaks into Dexter room with a knife. But just before he can do anything Dexter springs up and grabs him. Debra is right behind with gun drawn. Dexter tells Debra to leave.
Saxon wakes up in his own kill chair. The two talk about Miami and relationships. Dexter tells him he loves Hannah and thinks about her all the time. For the first time Dexter doesn't even want to be there for what is usually his favorite part. "I don't need to kill you," Dexter says. Dexter puts a gag in Saxon's mouth and calls Debra with a change of plans.
Debra drives to the hospital with Clayton right behind her. Inside Dexter tells her to take the credit for capturing him. Outside Debra and Dexter hug and she sends him off to catch his plane. Dexter gets into his car and Harry asks him if he's sure. Dexter says he is and Harry tells him he no longer needs him. Dexter drives away and Debra calls for back-up.
Clayton bursts into the room where Saxon is tied up. Saxon claims he was abducted and talks Clayton into untying him. Saxon stabs Clayton, then shoots Debra in the stomach when she rushes into the room. She gets off one shot, chasing Saxon off before calling in her own shooting.

He also says he feels like he needs to reach out to Vogel and make sure she's okay. Debra returns home and Dexter takes her aside to break the news of his planning to leave the country. She's not happy.
Quinn and Jamie have dinner. She's being recruited by a special needs academy in Atlanta but isn't going to accept because she doesn't want to leave town. He tells her to focus on her career and that they'll "make it work."

Saxon waits outside Vogel's place and asks to her get in his car so he can show her something.
Saxon brings Vogel to the old psychiatric hospital where he kills his victims. He's made the room look exactly like a Treatment Room from the place where he'd been held. He wants her to show him how to exist in the world while still a killer. To help him like she helped Dexter. She agrees to "find a way" and says she'll talk to Dexter.
Dexter uses Vogel's spare key to break in and use her computer to find Saxon. He's able to get onto Saxon's computer and video of his last two kills, including Zach. Dexter downloads them onto a flashdrive.
Clayton tells Angel that the Hannah investigation has been dropped to low priority. While in his office Clayton overhears Angel looking for Dexter's replacement. Clayton seems intrigued when Angel tells him that Dexter is leaving to spend time with his family.
Quinn breaks up with Jamie. She's convinced that Debra is the reason and is upset when Quinn says Debra had nothing to do with it.
Debra returns home and watches Dexter, Hannah and Harrison together. He hands her a beer and they talk about him leaving. Debra is scared.
Vogel stops by to see Dexter. When she sounds optimistic that her son can be saved he shows her video of Zach's murder. She seems to agree he must kill Saxon and instructs Dexter to make sure it's painless.
Clayton stops by to see Debra and Harrison on the beach. He tells her of his suspicions concerning Dexter and Hannah, but Debra does a good job of throwing him off the scent. He leaves and Debra goes inside to tell Hannah what happened, reminding her that she needs to stay hidden.
Debra tells Elway she's leaving. It is a short conversation.
While Hannah is watching Harrison he falls off Debra's treadmill and cuts his chin badly. She calls Dexter but he doesn't answer. Hannah takes Harrison to the ER where the desk nurse seems to be watching her carefully.
Dexter sets up his kill room with Harry watching. Dexter's is using victim pictures for the first time in awhile. He's using an old kill room and the two reflect on how far he's come.
Debra goes to the station to tell Angel she's officially coming back. Jamie yells at her when the two cross paths. Angel tells Debra that Jamie blames her from Quinn ending things.
Debra takes Quinn outside to talk things over. He says he probably would have ended things with Jamie anyway, but their kiss played a role. She tells him she still has feelings for him and then kisses him.
We see the ER nurse tell Clayton that she definitely saw Hannah. He looks down at the log book and sees she signed in as Debra Morgan.
Dexter returns home and Hannah tells him about the ER visit. He's concerned she's been exposed. Vogel calls to say Saxon's on his way over. This concerns Dexter and he tells Hannah he should go there. Dexter leaves the house but it clearly torn about whether to stay with Hannah or go to Vogel.
Vogel and Saxon share some tea and try to make small-talk. He's very aware she's scared.
Dexter pulls up to Vogel's home and gets out of his vehicle. As he walks to the door his phone rings. It's Saxon. He tells Dexter to watch the window. We see Saxon standing behind Vogel. He says "mother chose the wrong son and cuts her throat. Dexter goes inside where Vogel dies in his arms.

Debra drops by Miami Metro to see Dexter, who is looking at the blood evidence from Zach's killing. Dexter tells Debra about Zach being dead. Dexter learns that the hairs were a familial match to Vogel.
Dexter goes to see Vogel and tells her the Brain Surgeon is related to her somehow. She tells him she has two sons. The oldest son Daniel killed her youngest. Daniel was a psychopath and her desire to help him led her into her current field. He was placed in a mental health facility in England when he was 14 and was killed in a fire at the facility. Dexter suggest that perhaps Daniel faked his own death.
Dexter ages a picture of Daniel as a child to look like he's in his 40s. It starts to look like Oliver, the man Cassie was dating. The computer proves a facial match. He finds the real Oliver Saxon's death certificate online. Angel pops in with Clayton, the Marshall that Elway sent to look at Hannah. Dexter calls Hannah to warn her. She needs the money, so he offers to take her to see Arlene.
Quinn and Debra have lunch. He talks about Jamie and her issues with Debra still being in his life. Debra offers to speak with Jamie.
Dexter and Hannah stop by Arlene's place. Almost as soon as she gets the money out from a closet Dexter sees Clayton pull up in front of the house. Dexter hides Hannah away and sits at Arlene's table. His story is that he's there to tell Arlene that Hannah could be in town. Clayton asks how Arlene could afford her new home, at which point Dexter pretends to be her boyfriend. It seems to work.
Debra pays Jamie a visit. Jamie talks about the guy Cassie was dating and tells her that Cassie was on the verge of ending things. They had been scheduled to take a trip to the Bahamas. Debra calls Quinn and says she thinks they should look at Oliver Saxon for Cassie's murder.
Outside Arlene's Dexter tells Hannah he thinks the best place for her to stay is Debra's.

Harrison asks Dexter about the TV reports he's seen with Hannah. He tells his father he wishes Hannah could be his mother. Dexter gets an email from the lab proving Saxon is Vogel's son.
Dexter tells Vogel her son is alive. He tells her he plans to murder him and she says she's conflicted. She thinks she has a second chance and doesn't want her son to be killed. Dexter plays along and asks for help finding Daniel. Dexter figures out Daniel has been monitoring her laptop and plans to install spyware to find him. Vogel sends an email
Hannah talks to Dexter about deceiving Vogel and intending to kill Daniel. She brings up Harrison, but Dexter thinks Saxon must be stopped. She suggests the two of them making a new life in Argentina. He likes the idea and plans to give notice at Miami Metro.

Quinn tells Debra it seems Saxon's moved out. She tells him good luck and leaves.
At home Debra and Hannah make small talk. She asks Debra if she's going to go back to the force and the relationship between the two seems to thaw somewhat.
Clayton stops by Dexter's place and tells him he thinks the Hannah threat has died down. They are going to pull off the protective detail. Clayton asks Harrison about a family picture he's drawn that features a blonde woman he calls "Mom."
An angry Elway confronts Debra about finding out Dexter used to date Hannah. He's pissed that she was holding out on him and says if she doesn't care about her job she might as well quit.
Dexter stops by Vogel's place and puts one of Hannah's drug in her tea. The plan as she sees it is for them to meet Daniel, drug him and bring him to a facility. She is happy to be seeing her son. Vogel falls over and he makes her comfortable before leaving.
Dexter watches Daniel at a diner. He eventually leaves and Dexter follows him. Daniel gets into his truck, slashes Dexter tire and glares at Dexter before peeling out. Harry suggests to Dexter that perhaps Daniel went looking for Vogel.
Dexter arrives at Vogel's place and finds her safe. She tells him that from now on she wants to handle Daniel on her own. She doesn't think she can't trust him any longer. Dexter says that he's going to kill Daniel, then leave the country with Hannah. She tells him to "leave us alone."
After Dexter leaves we see that Daniel had been listening to the conversation. He wanted proof that his mother didn't send Dexter and seems satisfied. They sit down together for breakfast as the episode ends.

Debra tells Elway he doesn't deserve how she's treated him and thanks him for everything he's done to help her.
Zach pounds on Dexter's door. Cassie hears the noise and politely tells the kid this means he's probably not home. Zach storms off and rudely tells Cassie to give Dexter a nasty message for him.

Jamie asks Dexter about an upcoming date he has with Cassie. She thinks Harrison hid the TV remote but he denies it.
Dexter arrives at a bloody murder scene. Once again Zach is there with his camera. Dexter confronts Zach and invites him to the "other side of the yellow tape." Dexter allows him to take a few pictures of the scene and talks to him about the stabbing. Zach is impressed with Dexter's blood analysis. Dexter thinks the questions Zach is asking indicate he's making notes for his next kill.
Dexter and Cassie have a food truck dinner and talk about their hobbies. She wants to know what he's passionate about and he doesn't have much of an answer.
Elway and Debra watch Kevin at a singles bar and talk about family. Debra suggests setting him up and seeing if he takes the bait.

They talk about Vogel and her background, including her husband Dr. Richard Vogel. It turns out Harrison was lying about the remote and Dexter wonders if he should be concerned.

The two of them flirt at the elevator and when he leans in to kiss her Elway shows up and punches Kevin in the face, telling him "you're done." Elway demands he ends things with Susan that night.
Using her license plate Dexter finds out the woman Zach is following is Sofia Fuentes, an employee of the yacht club Zach's family owns. Dexter breaks into Zach's studio looking for pictures he might have taken of Norma before killing her. On a camera file he sees pictures of Zach taking pictures of Norma just after her death. Zach is visible with a murder weapon.
Dexter brings Vogel proof of Zach's guilt. She already knew and wonders if they should try and teach Zach the code. She "sees something" in Zach, but Dexter disagrees.
At Jamie's birthday party she suggests to Dexter that he needs to move fast on Cassie if he wants it to work. Masuka gives Nikki a check for $5,000, then tells her about his research. He's able to knock him out just before he gets to him.
Dexter puts Zach on the slab and asks him what's going on. Zach says he had to kill his father because his philandering is causing his mother to drink herself to death. He hoped killing Norma would do the trick, but his father immediately began sleeping with Sophia. Dexter brings up his interest in crime scenes and suggests Zach kills because "he wants to kill." The two of them talk about what it feels like to kill. Zach tells Dexter to kill him, because if he doesn't he'll kill again. He says he can't help it. Dexter realizes Zach "never had a Harry" and cuts him loose.

Dexter and Debra talk to Vogel about...
more
Dexter and Debra talk to Vogel about the "accident." Debra points out that she ultimately saved her brother from the sinking car, while Dexter is understandably upset she tried to kill them both. Vogel says Debra is struggling with what she's learned about Harry's suicide. Vogel thinks this was rock bottom and Debra's first step towards recovery. Dexter leaves to find Yates, saying "to Hell with both of you."
Dexter seems irritated by his family, even ignoring Debra's calls. Jamie wants to have Cassie over for dinner in an attempt to set her up with Dexter.
Before the next briefing Masuka tells everybody he has confirmed that Nikki is his daughter. Quinn warns him there must be some reason she's shown up in his life. Quinn runs the briefing in Angel's absence, reporting that Janet, the Brain Surgeon's stabbing victim, has survived. They've learned Norma had sex before her death and it was probably consensual. Her ex-boyfriend was out of town, but it's possible she was having an affair with her boss, Ed Hamilton. Angel shows up and says they have an address for Yates.
Matthews takes Quinn aside and tells him the Hamiltons are "good friends" of Miami Metro, and warns him to be very careful in the investigation.
Quinn and Dexter arrive with a warrant to collect DNA from Hamilton. Before the collection he admits to the affair with Norma. His wife found out and insisted she be fired. They had "break-up" sex earlier that day but Hamilton says she left alive. He has security camera proof. On his way out Dexter runs into Hamilton's son, who assures him his father is not a killer.
Yates breaks into Vogel's home while she has tea and attacks her.
Debra calls Vogel to say she's needs to talk and is coming by. She finds evidence of the break-in but Vogel is nowhere to be found.
At Yates' home the police discover he was burying bodies in the backyard. All of the victims were kept alive and tortured for weeks. He would break their toes before ultimately stabbing them. Debra shows up at the crime scene to tell Dexter about Vogel. She wants to help him find Yates. He asks why she didn't let him drown and she says she couldn't imagine her life without him in it. They thinks Yates has probably taken Vogel to a home he's worked in recently.
Elsewhere Yates angrily asks Vogel about Dexter as a desperate Vogel tries unsuccessfully to reason with him.
A vendor tells Quinn and Miller he spotted Hamilton's son Zach at Norma's place near the time of her death.
Nikki tells Masuka she sought him out because her mother recently died and she moved to Miami for school. She has been feeling alone. She asks questions about his financial situations and has Masuka pay for her lunch.
Dexter realizes it would take days to find which house Yates is hold up in with Vogel. He talks to Angel who tells him Yates has used the same ATM twice in the past few days.
Quinn tells Matthews about Zach and says the vendor has suddenly changed his story. Quinn thinks he was paid off by Hamilton but Matthews tells him not to bring Zach in for questioning.
Debra has Elway help find where Yates might be located. Masuka drops by and asks Debra to privately investigate Nikki.
Dexter comes home and finds Jamie, Quinn and Cassie preparing for dinner. He'd forgotten about the set-up and tells Jamie he needs to bail to get some work done. Jamie tells Dexter if he leaves, she'll leave and he'll have nobody to watch Harrison. Debra calls Dexter and they realize there about 20 potential homes Yates could be using. Dexter takes Cassie aside and tells him he needs to leave for work. She's cool with it and they agree to reschedule as Cassie adroitly begs out of the rest of the evening.
Yates prepares to break one of Vogel's toes. She then pretends to be his mother, yelling at him and slapping him. Yates leaves to clean himself up and Vogel calls Dexter from and leaves the 'phone connection open so that he can eavesdrop. Debra has Elway trace the number. While Dexter and Debra race to the location Yates discovers the phone.
Dexter and Debra arrive and find Vogel tied up upstairs. They ask where Yates is and Dexter spots some blood on the floor. Dexter sees he's hiding under the bed and pretends not to see him as Debra moves Vogel to safety. Dexter then takes a massive curtain rod and impales Yates through the bed.
After the rescue Vogel thanks them both for saving her. The three talk about the matter and Debra appears to have come to some sort of acceptance of the situation.
Dexter, Debra and Vogel dump Yates' body in the ocean. Vogel asks why he wanted them to come. He says "I wanted to be with family."

Scar Tissue
Open with Debra and Vogel at the site...
more
Open with Debra and Vogel at the site where she killed Maria. Vogel wants her to talk about what she saw that night. She thinks Debra repressing is the issue. Debra is having trouble trusting Vogel.
Dexter process the scene of a murder. It's a woman named Norma and Dexter believes she was killed by someone she knew. And ex named Roberto is the first suspect. Angel tells Quinn he "nailed" the sergeant exam.
Vogel tells Dexter he should prepare for the possibility that Debra may never want to be in his life again. Dexter can't accept this. His next Brain Surgeon target from her book is AJ Yates, a cable installer who was institutionalized at 15.
Dexter spots a strange scar on the back of Yates' head. He wonders if this is something Vogel had done.
Vogel shows Debra video of Harry talking to her about Dexter's budding murder career and the code. She tries to convince Debra that Harry wasn't wrong in sparing Dexter's life but Debra isn't convinced. Dexter rings the doorbell and wants answers regarding Yates' scar. She takes him outside (away from Debra) and tells she had recommended a lesion be removed from his brain in the hopes it would stop his behavior. Dexter stresses that he needs Debra in his life and wants her eventually forgive him. She thinks Dexter needs Debra as a mirror that shows him not to be a monster. She tells him he's within the natural order of things and doesn't need Debra.
Dexter finds Yates' place empty. He finds evidence that Yates still has a relationship with his elderly father.
Quinn hears guys talking about Debra's DUI. A fight ensues and Angel seems furious. Later that night Jamie and Quinn seem like they're doing okay.
Jamie tells Dexter that he made "quite an impression" on Cassie and tells him that she's single.
Vogel locks her and Debra in the storage container where she shot Maria. She forces her to confront her feelings about what happened. She suggests that Debra is bothered by the face she knows in her heart she'll always side with Dexter. Vogel wants her to realize that she's a good person who made the best of a bad situation.
Matthews asks Angel to "strongly consider" a different candidate for sergeant.
Dexter gets three hits on the partial prints from the shoes at Yates' place. All are missing women.
Quinn apologizes to Angel for his behavior. Angel tells him he needs to solve the case.
A young woman named Nikki stops by Masuka's office and says she may be his daughter. He was a sperm donor in college.
Elway finds a sober Debra hard at work in her office. He orders some food and helps her. The two talk about family and continue connecting.
Dexter returns to Yates' place and finds it has been cleaned out. He spots the secret room and realizes that Yates knew he had been there. He finds evidence that Yates is the Brain Surgeon. Dexter also finds a gravely injured woman and brings her to a doctor. He brings Vogel to Yates home and the two look through his computer. They find Vogel's files on his computer and Dexter sees that she'd been keeping notes on him. He's mad that he's basically her lab rat and say their relationship ends once he takes care of Yates.
Debra looks through Vogel's video files and finds an interview with Harry where he talks about having helped Dexter with one of his killings. Harry didn't think he'd be able to live with what he had done and Debra wonders to herself "But I'm supposed to?"
Yates gets a call from the retirement home that his father's heart is failing. The call was placed by Dexter, who is standing next to his bed. Yates arrives and Dexter corners him. But Yates disconnects his father's ventilator and escapes when the nurses arrive.
Angel asks Dexter to run the blood on Janet Thorton, the woman he found at Yates' place.
Debra tells Quinn to do what he can to "make it work" with Jamie. Debra then spots Dexter and says they need to talk.
Debra and Dexter go for a ride and agree that Vogel doesn't understand them. They talk about the videos and Debra references an "interesting" one from right before Harry's death. She asks Dexter if Harry committed suicide and Dexter confirms that he did. She says she thinks she understands how Harry felt, but says Harry "only got it half right" before jerking the car's wheel and sending them into a lake. A fisherman swims out and saves Debra. Dexter is still stuck in the car and Debra goes to save him once she comes to. The episode ends with Debra bringing him to the safety.

What's Eating Dexter Morgan?
Open with Dexter waking up to...
more
Open with Dexter waking up to Harrison calling his name. He sees a trail of red, but it turns out only to be that his son ate an entire box of popsicles. He gives Harrison some medicine and starts thinking about his sister.
We see Debra passed out in her car. Shes drunk and ran over a parking meter.
Quinn gets a call in the middle of the night about Debra. He lies to Jamie, telling her its a case. Quinn talks to the officer on duty and helps get Debra off.
The police are called to Sussmans cabin. His body has been moved and somebody has staged a suicide. A gunshot blew off the back of his head, which Dexter recognizes as the killers way to obscure Sussmans actual cause of death.
Quinn drops Debra off at her job. He tells Debra hes worried about her drinking and wonders if theres a reason shes spiraling out of control.
Vogel hears something and goes to her front door. She looks down and spots yet another present from the killer. They are his and her boxes. She brings the boxes to Dexter. They contain pieces of brain from Sussman. It is a message, letting her know that the killer is aware she has help. Ron Galuzzo is the next former patient of Vogels Dexter is going to investigate. It was because of her recommendation that Galuzzo was institutionalized.
Quinn tells Dexter about Debra almost getting a DUI. He tells Dexter they need to do something to help her. Quinn is late to the scene because he was helping Debra. Angel isnt happy. Dexter tells Vogel about Debras problems and that she knows all about him.
Elway and Debra sit with a new client. Its a woman who thinks her husband is having an affair. Debra is noticeably anti-social. After the client leaves Elway gives Debra something for her hangover. Dexter drops by Debras office and asks her about the near-DUI. He wants them to have dinner that night and talk. Reluctantly she agrees.
Angel tells the department that with Sussmans suicide, the Brain Surgeon case has been closed. Dexter sees that Galuzzo sells fitness equipment. Angel tells Matthews hes looking at Quinn to be a sergeant. Matthews doesnt like the idea.
Elway and Debra take pictures of the clients husband having sex in his car. He asks her about Quinn.
Dexter finds Galuzzo, working a stand at the mall. Dexter references Vogels book and Galuzzo lies, saying hes never heard of her.
Dexter reports back to Vogel that Galuzzo is definitely hiding something. His plan is to break into Galuzzos home the following day. Vogel tells her that the first rule of the code was not to get caught. She wonders why he didnt kill Debra when she learned his secret. Dexter says he loves his sister and could never kill her. She presses him about his feelings of love. She says again that hes a perfect psychopath and offers to help Debra. Dexter declines.
Angel is helping Quinn study for the sergeants test and its not going well. Angel is starting to think Matthews was right about him being a lost cause. Angel slips that there was no case the night before and Quinn is forced to tell Jamie hed gone to see Debra at 4am. Shes furious.
Debra and Dexter have dinner together. Theyre sitting near a man who she helped save. Dexter points out the mans daughter wouldnt have her dad if not for Debra and reminds her that shes a good person. The gesture appears to help break down a wall with Debra.
Dexter breaks into Galuzzos place.
Elway shows their new client the pictures they took of her having an affair. She appears to be in denial, saying its unclear whether the man in the picture was her husband. This triggers something with Debra.
Inside Galuzzos place he finds that the man eats human beings. But since he treats the human body (particularly the brain) as such a delicacy, he couldnt be the Brain Surgeon.
A drunken Debra sits in her car and watches the video Dexter showed her of the shootout that saved the man. We see shes sitting in the Miami Metro parking lot. She staggers into Homicide and runs into Quinn. She tells him she wants to make an official statement and whispers into his ear that she killed Maria. He leads her to an interrogation room and she weeps through an attempted confession. He gives her a notebook and pen, leaves the room and calls Dexter.
Dexter, who is with Vogel, asks her to come to the station with him. On the way Vogel suggests that perhaps Dexter cares about Debra going to jail only because it means hell go away as well. She thinks Debra needs professional help.
They arrive at the station and Vogel tells Quinn Debra is likely suffering from PTSD. Dexter and Vogel get Debra alone in the confession room while Quinn guards the hall. Debra is adamant shes going to tell them everything and Dexter gives her one of his hypodermics. They tell Quinn she passed out and need to take her home.
Dexter and Vogel bring Debra to her apartment. Vogel tells him that she thinks she can help Debra. She tells him to leave them along so she can do what I do. Before leaving Dexter handcuffs her to the couch and gives Vogel the key.
The episode ends with Dexter putting Galuzzo on the slab. Dexter tells the cannibal hes just like him: I consume everyone I love.

Every Silver Lining
Open with Vogel showing Dexter a...
more
Open with Vogel showing Dexter a video of her interviewing Harry when Dexter was just a kid. Harry had come to her because he was worried about Dexter's behavior, which involved asking to see a homicide scene then reacting with interest to the blood. The young Dexter had stolen a bloody piece of broken glass (in roughly the shape of a slide) for a trophy. Harry weeps in the video as he realizes his son is a psychopath. After turning off the video Vogel tells Dexter she "helped create" him. It was obvious Dexter would eventually become a killer and Vogel helped Harry craft his code. The she had never met him in person, Vogel feels she is Dexter's "spiritual mother." She tells him she needs a favor, then shows him somebody has left the piece of missing brain from the current murder case on her front door. She fears it might be a psychopath she's worked with in the past and wants him to find the person. When Dexter tells Vogel he thinks it is her problem she hands him a DVD.
We cut to the killer strangling his next victim with a plastic bag, telling him "I don't have a choice."
Dexter watches the DVD Vogel gave him. It's Harry again, telling her that Dexter showed a recent kill some photos of the man's victims. Dexter has three kills under his belt at that point and they feel like he's "embracing the process." Dexter shuts the computer and Harry shows up to point out that Vogel believed in him when even his father had doubts. They start talking about Debra and Harry thinks Vogel could open up some windows to his past.
Debra meets with Elway about the Briggs case. He seems skeptical about her need to spend two weeks with the guy. Eventually she shows him the key she took off Briggs and says she thinks they have a line on the stolen goods.
Miami Metro is called to the scene of the latest victim. The back of his head is missing, along with the portion of brain. Dexter and Masuka quickly determine he died of asphyxiation and find the bag sitting nearby. Dexter places the bag into evidence, then spots Vogel nearby. She says she's received another brain piece delivery. Vogel emphasizes she doesn't think he's evil. Vogel tells Dexter that Harry never had anyone to share his concerns with his son.
Debra and Elway use Briggs' keys and look through his apartment. She's feeling guilty that if she'd brought him right in he'd still be alive. They find a bill from a storage facility and suspect that's where he's been storing the jewelry. We see that El Sapo is following Debra.
Dexter shows Vogel he's gotten a hit from the plastic bag. The print traces back to a Lyle Sussman, a person Vogel doesn't recognize. He is single and has a lone drunken disorderly charge in his past. Masuka pops in and says he's gotten a partial fingerprint on the tape covering the victim's mouth. Dexter realizes he's in a race against Miami Metro.
At Sussman's place Dexter realizes he hasn't been there for a while. He spots a picture of the man hunting at a cabin. He figures that is where he's been taking his victims. He looks out the window and sees Angel pull up in the driveway.
Debra finds the jewels in Briggs' storage facility. Immediately El Sapo shows up from behind and takes it. She fights back and is beaten severely. El Sapo goes to his car and notices a significant cut on his face.
Angel and Quinn pay a visit to Sussman's mother. On the way inside Angel lets Quinn know he's aware he's dating Jamie. Since he's dating his sister, Angel wants him to take his career more seriously and take the sergeant's exam. Sussman's mother hasn't seen him for a few days, but tells the guys about his hunting habit and cabin.
El Sapo's body is found and Miami Metro is on the scene. They determine someone shot him from outside the car at close range. A second gun (which we know is Debra's) is found in the glove box. Dexter finds a small amount of glass he thinks may have come from the killer and sneaks it into his pocket.
Dexter calls Vogel and tells her he needs to help Debra before he finds Sussman. He finds Debra at home, asleep on her couch. She wakes up and he tells her about El Sapo. Debra doesn't seem concerned the person who killed him might come after her and asks him to leave.
Dexter goes to the cabin and finds Sussman hanging from a meat hook. He tells Vogel what he found. Vogel tells him she thinks psychopaths are "a gift," a kind of "alpha wolf." She says she has faith he'll be able to find who was pulling Sussman's strings. Vogel asks about Debra and he pulls back.
Jamie and Angel start to argue over his interest in what's happening with Debra, then about what Angel said to him about the sergeant's exam. She ends up cancelling their date and going back inside. Jamie yells at Angel and tells him to stay out of her private life.
Dexter runs a trace on the blood from El Sapo's car and matches it to Debra. She must have killed him. Dexter looks up and sees that Debra has stopped by the office to answer some of Quinn's questions about El Sapo.
Quinn brings Debra into an interview room and starts asking her about Briggs and El Sapo. Dexter watches/listens in the observation room. He hears her lie about Brigg's death, then start spacing out when he shows her pictures of El Sapo's body. Dexter rushes in to rescue her, telling Quinn there is a "family emergency."
Out in the alley Dexter tells Debra he knows she killed El Sapo. She's not real clear on exactly how it happened. When he mentions her gun is in custody and will eventually be traced back to her, she asks him to switch it out. This leads to an argument over Harry and Dexter being a serial killer. Debra whines about how lousy her life is and says it's possible she might shoot another person.
Dexter pays a visit to the evidence locker. He replaces Debra's gun with another one.
Debra pulls up to a party attended by most of the department. Quinn sees her and she drives away.
Dexter gets a call from Vogel. Her front door has been left open and she is worried somebody is inside. Dexter clears the house and they find a DVD has been left. It shows that Sussman's crimes were being committed with a gun to his head. He was just a pawn. Dexter tells Vogel he thinks he's "destroyed" Debra and feels he's a mistake. She comforts him as the episode ends.

A Beautiful Day
Open six months after last season...
more
Open six months after last season concluded. Dexter tells us via voiceover that Maria's death "got me back on track." His life appears to be going great.
Dexter attends the dedication of a memorial (a bench) in Maria's honor. After the ceremony Angel thinks a bench isn't the right way to honor her. He seems still to be struggling with her death. Maria's death brought Angel back to police work, but it sounds as if Debra quite immediately following her death. Quinn tells Dexter he hasn't heard from Debra recently.
Cut to Debra doing drugs with a man with whom she appears to be romantically involved in a hotel room. He seems to be a criminal of some kind.
Dexter drops by Debra's place to look for her. He tells Harry he hasn't seen her in two months. Dexter sees a mixture of prescription and recreational drugs and grows concerned.
Dexter goes to Debra's job, a place called Elway Investigations run by a former Miami Metro officer. Elway hasn't heard from her in a few weeks, the longest such delay. She's been working a smash-and-grab case involving someone named Briggs.
The latest case is Robert Bailey, a 40-ish gunshot victim who had the back of his head cut open and a piece of his brain removed. He was then dumped at a different location with the murder weapon.
Dexter investigates Briggs, who we recognize as the man she's been hanging out with. He stole $500,000 in jewelry and skipped on his bail. He has a history of violence. Dexter hacks her credit card info and learns where she's been the past few weeks.
Dexter finds Debra and Briggs and sees they're all over each other. He confronts her in a store and she claims to still be working the case. She's waiting to get all of the stolen good from Briggs. She says she hasn't been returning his calls because she hates him for making her compromise her values. Debra and Briggs leave together.
Dexter tells Harry he thinks Debra is using her job to escape from reality. He then has a road rage incident where he chokes a man who cut him off.
Quinn and Jamie are secretly dating. Angel talks to Jamie about Maria as he goes through her personal stuff.
The department is introduced to Dr. Evelyn Vogel, a neuropsychologist there to help on their latest case. Vogel has noticed that the part of the brain removed was the piece that processes empathy. She wonders if the killer is trying to communicate though the victim. The victim was likely held captive and she thinks they are looking for a serial killer.
Dexter is concerned that someone like Vogel will be working so close to him. Angel gives Dexter a gift of Maria's possessions. During the conversation Dexter slips and says Maria died because "she couldn't leave things alone."
Briggs meets with a potential fence known as El Sapo. When he leaves the room Debra calls Quinn and asks him to look-up the guy. Briggs comes back and tells her things went well.
Vogel brings Dexter down to the morgue. She's looking at Bailey's brain. After asking for a few updates on the case Vogel starts to talk about how the two of them got to their respective careers. She brings up the Bay Harbor Butcher and asks about Doakes. Vogel believes the Butcher operated with some moral guidelines and says she wishes she could have interviewed him.
Dexter asks Matthews about Vogel and how she got to the case. It turns out she called him "out of the blue." He wonders internally if he is the reason Vogel made contact.
Quinn tells Dexter that Briggs robbed a mafia store and nobody is willing to buy his merchandise other than the mob. Nobody has heard of El Sapo.
That night Briggs gets a call from El Sapo. He's going to stop by with the money and Briggs will take him to the merchandise. Briggs doesn't want Debra around when he arrives, in case the man is dangerous.
Dexter looks up El Sapo and finds out he's a hit man. Harrison accidentally smashes Maria's vase and Dexter snaps at him. Dexter tries to call Debra but her voicemail is still full.
Dexter (who has Harrison that night) puts Harrison in the car and goes to Quinn's place. Quinn gives him the name of a hotel where Debra had been staying.
Dexter brings Harrison to the hotel. He falls asleep in the car Dexter leaves him to look for her. He spots her and Briggs in one of the rooms and is able to make contact with Debra. He tells her about El Sapo and she says she doesn't care if she dies. Briggs spots Dexter and recognizes him from the store. This leads to a fight and Dexter stabs Briggs when he comes at Dexter with a knife. She still has no interest in going with him and offers to help hide the body. Instead Debra tells him she's going to call it in and makes a call. Dexter leaves and Debra grabs his keys. Dexter returns to his car and finds Harrison not in the car. Harrison was looking for his father, who picks him up with one hand covered in blood.
Debra tells the police she returned home to find Briggs dead and has no idea who might have wanted to hurt him. She leaves and gives Elway an update, saying she might have a lead on the merchandise. El Sapo is watching Debra the entire time.
Dexter thinks Debra may have been right that he is "lost" as a person and is unable to let her go. Without Debra he's not sure who he is anymore. Vogel approaches Dexter while he's sitting on Maria's bench in a panic. He tells her he's not in the mood so she leaves him a folder. It's drawings Dexter made as a child. He chases her down and pins her against a wall. Vogel tells Dexter he can't kill her and when he asks why not responds "Because I don't fit Harry's code."

Dexter: Surprise, Motherfucker!
Open with Hannah in jail. Dexter...
more
Open with Hannah in jail. Dexter comes to visit her. She's furious with him and says she poisoned Debra because "she was trying to keep us apart." Dexter says she left him no choice. She says his secret is safe with her. He tells her if there were any other way to keep Debra safe he would have found it. Dexter is emotional and tells Hannah he misses her. She suggests they could leave the country together but Dexter says they'll never be able to trust one another. They begin making out and she bites him.
Hannah calls Arlene from prison and she needs her help.
Harrison asks about Hannah. There is a knock on Dexter's door. It's Maria, there with several officers. She places him under arrest for the murder of Estrada and reads him his rights.
Dexter is brought into the station in cuffs. Maria tells Angel she has proof Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher. Debra tries to intervene but Maria tells her to stand down.
Dexter's official statement is that he went fishing the night before. Maria accuses him of cutting Estrada's body into pieces and dumping him in the ocean. She has cell phone pictures of him with plastic bags and says one of them contained Estrada's bloody shirt and wallet. Maria accuses him of betraying everybody in the station. Dexter accuses her of being blinded by her relationship with Doakes. Masuka comes into the room and says the shirt was from his arrest 30 years earlier and the wallet has Maria's print on it. Maria thinks Dexter has set her up. Dexter is allowed to leave.
Maria and Dexter end up in the elevator together. Maria said Doakes "always knew there was something wrong with you."
Dexter flashes back to working with Doakes on a case. Maria calls Doakes away and Dexter sees her give him a key. This seems to disappoint Doakes.
Angel has figured out that Maria was behind Estrada's release. He tells her if she wants to keep her job she needs to back off Dexter.
Debra drops by Dexter's place. Dexter tells her that his plan worked and Maria shouldn't be able to come at him anymore. Dexter thinks it was either her or him. Debra asks about Hannah and the potential for her using what she knows about him to get a reduced sentence at her arraignment the following day. Dexter doesn't think she will because she's in love with him. Harry shows up and reminds Dexter that Estrada is still out there. If Maria finds him she'll probably offer him a deal.
Dexter shows up at the last known address of Estrada's wife. She says she hasn't seen him in years. But she is still wearing her wedding ring.
Back in a flashback Dexter is a little too excited to reenact a crime scene for Doakes' tastes.
Dexter follows Estrada's wife from her apartment complex.
Maria asks Matthews for his support. He eventually agrees to help her in some way.
Debra shows up for Hannah's arraignment. Before it begins Debra asks Hannah to confess. Hannah reminds her that Debra knows what Dexter is and asks how she justifies not arresting her brother. Hannah is denied bail. On her way out of the courtroom Arlene slips her something.
Angel asks Maria to show up at his retirement party. He thinks it will be an opportunity for her to apologize to Dexter and smooth things over.
On her ride back to the prison Hannah begins having seizures. She is rushed to the hospital and begins receiving treatment.
Maria calls Debra into her office. She says she allowed her feelings for Doakes to impact her decision-making and apologizes. Maria wants to go over some loose ends on Travis Marshall's death. Debra says she didn't go the church that day. She pops in footage from a gas station two blocks from the church that shows Debra was in the area 20 minutes before the fire. Maria wonders why she was filling up a gas can and not her car. She asks if there anything Debra would like to get off her chest. Maria says she thinks Debra made a mistake trying to protect Dexter. Maria says this is only the start of "a much larger conversation."
Dexter follows Estrada's wife to a park. She's been bringing him food. After she leaves Dexter pays some kids to throw a ball at him and lead him to Dexter's car. He knocks him out and throws him into the back of his car. Debra calls Dexter.
Hannah begins to wake up at the hospital.
After hearing the latest from Maria, Dexter tells Debra "this is bad." Dexter wants to figure out what else Maria does or doesn't know.
Hannah has disappeared from her hospital bed.
Dexter breaks into Maria's place. He finds warrants for Maria to track the GPS signals on Dexter and Maria's phones. This will allow her to prove that Debra was his accomplice. Harry thinks Dexter should run, but he says he can't do it at this point. He wants to stand his ground. He appears to be considering killing Maria. Harry reminds him that Maria doesn't meet the code, but Dexter says he simply can't let Debra go down for his crimes.
Dexter flashes to an angry Doakes telling Dexter that he should have never gotten involved with Maria. Something Dexter said is verbatim to what Doakes read in the journal of a guy he is trying to arrest for murder. Doakes thinks there is something wrong with Dexter.
Dexter has Estrada call Maria and tell her to meet him at the same container. Estrada tells Dexter that his mother was a snitch and "it was her or me." Dexter tells Estrada he has another kill coming up that won't be easy. Dexter says that tonight he'll be an ordinary killer.
Angel's party is in full swing. Debra is trying to get in touch with Dexter. Jamie sits down at a table with Quinn, who is getting drunk to forget his troubles. Debra calls the station and finds out Maria is headed to the shipping yards.
Hannah leaves a plant in front of Dexter's door.
Maria arrives at the container. She enters with gun drawn and finds Estrada's body. Dexter sneaks up from behind and gets a needle in her neck. His plan is to make it look as if Maria and Estrada killed one another.
Another car arrives at the container. It is Debra. She hears a gun shot and walks in on him. She points her gun at him and says she can't let him go through with it. Maria wakes up and tells Debra to shoot Dexter. Maria tells Debra that she's a good person. Dexter agrees and tells Debra to "do what you gotta do." Debra instead shoots Maria, then rushes to her side and sobs.
Dexter and Debra go to Angel's party. Dexter's voiceover talks about the fallout of breaking rules. "Is this the beginning of the end?"

Open with Dexter speeding through...
more
Open with Dexter speeding through highway traffic towards the airport. He stops for gas and, finding his cards declined, goes to the trunk for cash. At the airport he buys a ticket for Budapest, despite eyeing a flight to Munich-Kiev. He flashes back to the end of last season when Debra finds him with Travis on the slab. Dexter tell her "I snapped," blaming Rita's death. She asks about him being wrapped in plastic and he says it's just "second nature not to leave a trace." When Debra tries to call the station he stops her, pointing out how weird everything looks. He points out that even if it's ruled self-defense he'd lose his job and his son. He suggests getting rid of the body, but she doesn't go for it. Dexter then thinks they could make it look like a suicide, including setting the church on fire. The plan involves gasoline and Debra says she'll go get a few gallons. Dexter flashes back to childhood and Harry wanting to get rid of a dog that Debra likes. Dexter thinks he needs to keep Debra from the "whole truth." Dexter takes down all of his kill stuff. Debra buys gasoline and the two of them set the church on fire. Dexter and Debra are quickly called by the church. Dexter helps explain that this was "one final tableau." To his horror Dexter looks down and sees plastic between Travis' toes. They are able to distract Masuka in time to grab the evidence. On her way out Maria finds one of Dexter's blood samples in a grate. She grabs it and hands it to a tech to be logged into evidence. Dexter goes home to find Louis standing near his desk. His computer is warm, but Louis says he was just checking basketball scores while waiting for Jamie to get Harrison to bed. Dexter isn't polite about telling Louis it isn't okay that he was messing with his stuff. After Louis and Jamie leave Dexter looks at his slides, immediately noticing that he is missing one. We see Louis on his computer at home. He complains to Jamie about how much of a jerk Dexter was being and we see that he is canceling Dexter's credit cards. Anderson calls Debra, curious about why Travis' car wasn't at the church. She seems to give him a valid rationale for why it might have happened. Anderson stops to help a driver stopped at the side of the road. When Anderson looks in the trunk for a wrench he spots a dead girl. The driver shoots Anderson and takes off in his car. Debra asks Dexter how he was so prepared to kill someone in such a forensically conscious way. She noticed his clothes were different and he was wearing an apron with plastic sleeves. He has an answer for everything, but she seems bothered by the situation. Debra gets a call about Anderson. Dexter says he'll be "two minutes behind you," but goes for his getaway pack, which contains cash and passports. Dexter arrives at the scene to find Anderson has been killed. Dexter analyzes the girl in the back of the trunk, while Debra gives him a dirty look. The dead woman's (who also owns the car) name is Kaja. Dexter finds a fingerprint on the turn signal. Debra is re-living watching Dexter kill Travis and is recalling when she was on Brian Moser's table. At the station Debra asks for the files on the Ice Truck Killer case. She notices similarities in method to what she saw Dexter do with Travis. Dexter finds no match to the turn signal print. Debra stops in to see him in his office and asks about the similarities to the Ice Truck Killer. Dexter knows the explanation is the Moser was imitating him, but all he says is "this is crazy" and asks her why she was in the church. He tells her it will never make any sense and doesn't mention the print he found in Kaja's car. After Debra leaves Dexter gets an Interpol match to a Ukrainian named Viktor Baskov. Dexter leaves and Debra jumps on his computer. Dexter goes to the address listed for Viktor and finds blood, gunshot residue and evidence he he's leaving for Kiev in less than two hours. We're back to the scene from the opening. Dexter pays for his ticket in cash, using a fake name. Dexter gets through security with his needles and finds Viktor. Angel and Quinn go to the strip club where Kaja worked. Quinn knows the manager, a man named George. He says he has no information. The strippers aren't talking. Angel tells Quinn blood was found outside the club. Dexter injects Viktor in the bathroom, placing him in a wheelchair and taking him to the airport's lost baggage area. Debra tells Angel to shut down every one of the strip clubs run by George until somebody talks. Musaka tells Debra he doesn't know much about the Anderson shooter. At the bar Quinn and Angel toast Anderson. Angel admits he never put in for a transfer, he was just trying to help Quinn get his life together. Viktor wakes up on the slab and says he has "very dangerous friends." Dexter kills him with a fire extinguisher. George calls somebody named Isaac, who appears to be a wealthy Ukrainian in charge of everything. He tells him when Viktor is scheduled to arrive in Kiev and says he'll take care of the problem with Anderson. Dexter leaves the airport with Viktor's body, wondering if perhaps nothing need change with Debra. We see Debra on the treadmill. She thinks of something and grabs her phone. She calls Jamie and asks for Dexter. Jamie says he's at work now and tells Debra that Dexter often works until 3 or 4am. While disposing of Viktor's body he flashes back to Debra asking why Harry took the dog away. Harry says it was because Dexter's allergic, then takes Dexter to another room. Dexter tells Harry he wouldn't have killed the dog, but Harry says he couldn't take that chance. Harry tells young Dexter he can't ever tell Debra the truth. He says Debra would be terrified if she knew what he really is. Dexter thinks his mistake was trying to save Travis instead of killing him right away. Debra looks back at the Ice Truck Killer file and flashes back to being on the slab. Moser wanted to kill her, but Dexter stopped him. Maria asks Masuka about the evidence from the church. He tells her nobody's has time to go through anything. Masuka tells her the only person at Miami Metro to use blood slides was Doakes, the man Dexter framed as the Bay Harbor Butcher. Dexter comes home to find everything in shambles. Debra is sitting on a chair with his slides in front of her. "Did you kill all these people?" she asks. "I did," he says. "Are you a serial killer?" "Yes." Dexter closes his eyes as the episode ends.

Dexter is adrift in the ocean, alive...
more
Dexter is adrift in the ocean, alive and unburned, clutching a piece of the lifeboat. When that makeshift float sinks, he thinks about what knowing he is going to die feels like.Just then a ship happens by. It seems to be a group of people trying to get into the U.S. unlawfully. The owner of the boat pulls out a gun and starts to rob everybody. Dexter reacts quickly, taking a huge fishing lancer and kills the man. He takes control of the boat and brings everybody near the shore.Travis is still in the home of the couple he killed. On TV we see that a solar eclipse will take place the following day.Dexter tells Jamie that he fell off his boat while out at sea. She reminds him that Harrison's pageant is tomorrow.Travis breaks apart furniture and piles it in the middle of the living room. He says "Today's the day" and leaves. An emotional Deb hugs Dexter. She heard his boat had washed ashore and was worried he was dead. She says "I love you" and he off-handedly says "I love you, too." She says "You do?" and says she doesn't think he's ever told her. They get word of a double murder. It's the couple Travis has killed. Dexter is the first one inside which gives him the opportunity to remove his face from the huge tableau Travis had painted in the living room. The rest of the team comes inside. They figure out the painting is the beast in the lake of fire, and wonder if it's the final tableau. Deb is acting strangely around Dexter. After she leaves Dexter spots a hand-written drawing in the trash. He wonders if Travis' work isn't finished after all.Travis drives by and sees the police have shown up. He wonders what to do next, then looks down at Dexter's license in the wallet he had taken after incapacitating Dexter, and says "Thank you."Jamie asks Masuka about staying around permanently. Masuka mentions part-time work might be possible.Deb shows the team that the night before a pilot took a picture of a circle of fire about seven miles off shore (the one set by Travis to surround the dinghy he'd left Dexter in). They think that means Travis has completed his work. The working guess is that Travis will want to watch the eclipse (the end of the world) from a high point, which in Miami means a skyscraper. Deb wants to post uniform officers at the top of the city's tallest buildings.Based on the sketch Dexter found he decides Travis will most likely be going to the Transcorp Building, which is solar powered. Deb asks Dexter to do a final sweep of Travis' church after Harrison's pageant. She asks Dexter if they need to talk but he doesn't seem to know what she's talking about.Angel tells Quinn he's going to transfer him out of Homicide. Quinn isn't happy.Much to Deb's surprise LaGuerta accepts her idea of targeting the skyscrapers in order to find Travis.Using Dexter's keys Travis lets himself into Dexter's apartment. He learns that Dexter has a son and spots a flyer for the pageant. The way the pageant is organized, each parent leads their toddler on stage wearing a mask of the animal their child is dressed as.Deb gives final instructions to the officers that will be looking for Travis. Quinn tells Angel that he's told his union rep that he has an alcohol problem. Since it's a disease, as long as he seeks help he cannot be fired or transferred.Looking at one of Gellar's drawings and going back to some old pictures they suspect that Travis may not be done killing. Deb calls Dexter and says that before the eclipse (which is less than an hour) Travis will offer a sacrifice. Since a lamb was used in the drawing she thinks it could be an innocent of some kind. Dexter realizes he can't find Harrison. A woman tells him that Harrison "just left" and we see Travis leading Harrison towards the Transcorp Building.Using Harrison as a distraction Travis is able to kill the cop posted on the building's roof. When Deb checks in with the various buildings Travis grabs the radio and says "all clear."Travis pulls out a sword and holds Harrison in his arms. Just before killing the child Dexter runs up and tells him to stop. Since "the beast" isn't dead, Dexter argues, sacrificing an innocent won't work. Dexter gets Travis to agree to release Harrison as long as Dexter injects himself with the hypodermic he's brought. But Dexter doesn't actually push the plunger and turns the tables on Travis just as he is about to kill him. He knocks Travis unconscious and grabs Harrison. When the Transcorp officer stopz responding the teams head over. They find the officer dead. They find an altar, but no sign of Travis. Deb is panicking. LaGuerta shows up but assures Deb that she did the right thing.Dexter gives Travis another tranquilizer shot and locks him in his trunk. He puts Harrison to bed.Deb barges in to see her psychiatrist without an appointment and blurts out that she realizes she's in love with Dexter. She thinks that is the explanation for why she's chosen some terrible men. She's been trying to hide from her feelings. Her plan is to tell Dexter how she feels and find out what he thinks.Travis wakes up on Dexter's slab. Travis makes the case he was chosen by God to bring about a new world. Dexter counters that all Travis was doing was using God as an excuse to kill innocent people. Dexter says light cannot exist without darkness and perhaps his darkness is to bring balance to the world. While Dexter is talking to Travis we see Deb walk through the church doors by herself. From a distance she sees Dexter plunge a knife into Travis' chest. At that same moment Dexter turns his head and realizes his sister has seen him murder Travis."Oh God," Dexter says.

While Dexter hunts around Travis nearly passes out.Dexter finds Travis a hotel for him to hide out. Dexter gives Travis a little medical attention and tells him he is not to leave the room.Dexter looks up 2LOT online and finds it is a philosophy related to "the tendency of order to become disorder or chaos. Dexter found a Miami South University parking pass in the church and sees online that a Professor Casey is connected with 2LOT and is a crusader for atheism.Deb talks to the psychiatrist about Dexter. The conversation drifts to her father and her past relationship with a serial killer. The therapist wonders if they should meet more than once a week. Before Deb's briefing, Masuka tells the guys about Quinn getting loaded and proposing to strippers. Angel explains that the likely next tableau, The Bowls of Wrath, has to with punishment poured on the people. Gellar has recently updated his blog, saying that something big is happening in six days. Louis tells Deb he's going to try and take a stab at finding the IP address where Gellar updated.Angel shows up at Quinn's place where he's passed out on the floor. Quinn's gun is missing. After class he tells Casey that he might be in danger. Casey brushes him off.Dexter sets up his kill room at the abandoned church. He tells Harry it's important to him that he kills Travis' dark passenger.Travis tells Dexter that Gellar convinced him they were chosen by God. He tells him when Gellar's gone they can start again. Travis spots Gellar outside Casey's office. Dexter takes the elevator up to grab Gellar, leaving Travis downstairs in case he doubles back. The elevator shuts off and Dexter tries to escape through the shaft. He wants Travis to start sending him messages through the blog. The next day Deb tells Dexter the DDK killer has struck again. He is called to the MSU campus where Casey's body is lying on a stage minus his right hand. His blood has been drained and the Alpha and Omega symbols are carved into his abdomen his stomach, though, has been removed. When Masuka lifts Casey's arm buckets containing his blood pour down on top of them like the earlier "angel tableau," this scene has been booby-trapped.Travis wakes with a start. He walks into the bathroom and sees a message written in blood: "BRING THE FALSE PROPHET TO THE CHURCH." Casey's missing hand is in the sink.Deb tells the psychiatrist about Dexter being related to Brian Moser. He did what he could to save her but would have ruined his career if he stuck around for the police. He says "we have to stop her."While Travis washes off the blood he gets a call from Dexter. He says he felt a connection with Jonah and needed someone to talk to. Deb is upset he didn't confide in her.Dexter arrives at another scene. It's the "Whore of Babylon," a woman with a brand on her stomach and mask, sitting atop a crocodile with several heads. The mask is removed and we see that it is Lisa. more
Dexter is following Travis through a market. Deb calls with news that Sam has been shot and he's being worked on by EMTs. After Dexter leaves we see Travis meet Geller and the two men pick out a woman's garment, "something tawdry." Travis asks Geller for permission to give the woman they abducted painkillers for her broken arm. Geller says she doesn't deserve it and warns Travis to get his act together.Dexter gets to Sam's garage just as Sam is taken away in an ambulance. Dexter gets to work and pieces together the scene effortlessly. Dexter remembers hitting Julio's No. 2 guy with a bat and wonders if the man may have ascended in the hierarchy. He goes to Sam's office and scrapes some flakes of dried blood off the bat. It's later becomes a match to Leo Hernandez. Dexter calls his last known address and pretends to be social services. The woman he speaks with hasn't see Leo in a year.Deb tells Dexter Sam is in surgery. Anderson tells Deb about a possible connection to Julio's gang. Nick ends up telling Dexter where he can find Leo.Angel and Quinn tell Deb about Charisa giving them an interesting tidbit about Geller: Apparently he thought he'd deciphered a code in Revelations that had to do with how he could bring about the end of the world. They also find a clipping from a college newspaper where he had a woman pose in public with a dead lamp to prove some point that got him in trouble. Deb notices a tattoo on the woman's back. After she leaves Quinn tells Angel that he recognizes the tattoo from his one-night stand with Charisa. Quinn asks Angel not to tell Deb.Travis works on what appears to be a branding iron. We hear the woman weeping in the background.Deb tells Angel to have Charisa come down from Tallahassee to the station for questioning. The plan is for Quinn to avoid her when she arrives.Dexter stakes out Leo's place and sees a party going on. He goes home and relieves Jamie. Dexter tries to poo-poo what happened to Sam, but as soon as she leaves he rips a drawer onto the ground violently. Harry shows up and they talk about Sam and his being a fellow traveler, one who found the light.Deb meets with a psychiatrist for the last of her post-shooting counseling sessions. She drops a bomb about her life feeling so out-of-sorts. The therapist leaves her a card.Dexter waits for Leo to wake up the following morning.Anderson finds a junki and gets information on who is running Julio's gang now. When Leo finally wakes up and walks outside Dexter is shocked when Anderson pulls up along with back-up. A shootout ensues and Leo is gunned own. Inside Leo's place they find a security DVD from Sam's garage. At the station they watch the footage. The sweatshirt seems to match Leo's, but they don't see his face. Deb is going to host a party that night. When everybody else leaves Dexter notices that on the tape Sam's dog isn't barking at the shooter. The only person Sam's dog doesn't bark at is Nick.We see Travis is collecting his own blood in jars and storing them in the fridge. He gives the woman a sandwich. She begs for her life and tells him about having a child. He leaves. Travis goes to see his sister, a teacher, at work. He seems to have a great time with the kids.Dexter goes to Nick's apartment and pulls the slug out of his wall from when Nick shot at Sam when he was stoned. It ends up matching the bullets found in Sam's body. With Deb watching through the one-way mirror Angel interviews Charisa (Mariana Klaveno). Deb notices that Quinn isn't there and tells him to get in there. Charisa doesn't give them any great information about Geller, but does angrily reference the fact she slept with Quinn. Deb chews him out for risking the case. She tells him she doesn't care who he sleeps with.Dexter is called to the hospital. Apparently Sam has woken up, but doctors think it is just a short matter of time before he dies.Dexter tells Sam he knows about Nick and plans to get revenge. Sam tells Dexter that the reason he asked him to come there is because he wants him to tell Nick that he forgives him. Sam says he knows about Dexter's darkness but thinks he can't get past it. He thinks if Dexter doesn't kill Nick it will help him.At Deb's party Angel apologizes for not telling her about Quinn and Charisa. A super-drunk Quinn shows up with a random woman, who leaves as soon as she sees she was brought to his ex's party.Dexter is torn about Sam's request he let go of the darkness.Geller tells Travis that he needs to leave to take care of some things. While he's gone he wants Travis to "mark the whore." Travis grabs the brand out of the fire and stands over the woman.Quinn says some inappropriate things about Jamie and Angel punches him. Quinn asks Deb if she ever loved him. She doesn't answer.Sam dies. Outside the hospital Dexter sees Nick and asks him to take a ride with him.Deb is trying to get Dexter on the phone.Dexter takes Nick to the beach where he was baptized. He tells him he knows that he shot Sam and asks him why. Nick says he feels like Sam lied to him, since his life never got any better. He wanted to go back to his gang life but they wouldn't take him unless he did something to prove himself -- kill Sam. Dexter says he should turn him in because the police will eventually find him anyway. Nick says that they won't find him, since the tape doesn't have anything on it, it will be his word against Dexter's. Nick laughs hysterically at the though of getting away with murder. This makes up Dexter's mind on whether to spare Nick or not. He tackles Nick into the Ocean and holds him under until he drowns. Then he says "There's no light in you, there's no light in me." As Dexter walks back onto the beach he sees his brother Brian Moser who asks "Hey little brother, miss me?"

The Angel of Death
While Dexter is examining the angel...
more
While Dexter is examining the angel wings from the last staged murde, he's thinking that the man he saw in the crowd might be involved. He finds that the wings have been repaired with an unusual glue.Elsewhere, Travis and Geller are talking about needing to hunt again, but they need to find a "whore of Babylon" for their next Book of Revelations scenario.Dexter learns that the glue from the wings is something used in ancient manuscript repair.During Deb's briefing we learn that the dead woman worked at a Miami cultural center. Anderson has done more research on Revelations. The victim recently had sex. They are looking at a former assistant of Geller's named Charisa Porter. Another number, 1244, was in the victim's esophagus. Masuka's new intern, Louis Green, has discovered the most repeated number in Revelations is1260 and the guess is that they might only have a few weeks. Dexter doesn't reveal to Deb what he's found.Masuka asks computer wiz Louis to help him with his missing evidence problem. He wants to get the Ice Truck Killer severed hand Ryan stole back from the purchaser.Quinn asks Deb, who had completely forgotten that she still had it, for his engagement ring back. After he leaves she calls Jamie and asks her to look around the apartment.Sam drops by the station to report his garage being shot up. Dexter invites him to drop by and see Harrison.Dexter goes to the museum where the last victim worked. He spots Travis in an instructional video.Anderson calls Dexter to a double homicide scene. Within minutes Dexter is able to figure out that what occurred was actually a murder-suicide. Anderson is impressed.Travis and Geller are at a nightclub scouting for their next victim. They see Geller's face on the front of the newspaper in connection with the Doomsday killings and decide Travis should find the next victim on his own.Dexter finds Travis' name on the museum's website. He researches his name and finds out Travis has no record. Sam drops by and hangs out with Dexter. Dexter reveals to Sam that witnessing his mother's death at age 3 is what created the darkness inside him that drew him to work in homicide. Sam thinks that Dexter could use the power of good to get past his darkness.Travis makes an awkward and thoroughly inept attempt to abduct a young woman leaving a party and fails. Travis reports his failure to Geller, who says he'll need to assist. When Travis leaves his house Dexter breaks in to look for evidence of his involvement in the murders. He finds that the page numbers in Travis' bible have been cut out. Dexter carefully excises one of those pages. It ends up being a perfect match for one of the numbers found on one the victim's bodies.Quinn and Angel interview Porter. She had a brief relationship with Geller and doesn't think he could possibly be involved. Quinn asks for help while spending their night on the road and she offers to meet them.Anderson tells Deb about his murder-suicide and her brother's acumen at the scene.Quinn and Porter hit it off and start getting drunk together at a bar as Angel leaves, disgruntled. The end up hooking up back at her place for the night.Deb is doing work at Dexter's place surrounded by crime scene photos. When Harrison comes in to give her a hug goodnight he walks right into the graphic photos. Jamie is furious and this starts a fight between the nanny and the aunt. Dexter comes home and remains neutral, but tells Deb that perhaps she needed to be more careful.Geller puts his foot on the gas and forces Travis to drive his car into a young couple. Travis grabs the woman and sticks her in the trunk. The next morning Angel stops by Porter's place to get Quinn. While waiting for Quinn he goes through a box labeled "Geller" and finds a journal in which are sketches depicting an angel-themed murder exactly like the one that recently happened. Porter confirms Geller drew the sketches.Deb goes to see a counselor and gets some stuff off her chest. Soon after she goes to the house where Anderson's murder-suicide took place and gets the guy to rent the place to her at a reduced rate.Deb has her engagement ring back, and sticks it in Quinn's desk drawer.Louis has come up huge for Masuka. He couldn't find the name of the person who bought the hand stolen from the evidence locker, but he was able to erase any record of the sale from the Internet auction site. He also cleans up Vince's browser history, including any visits to favorite porn sites. Masuka gulps quietly and bears it.Dexter is waiting for Travis in the back of his car, and loops a garrote his throat and applies enough pressure to control the man. He has him drive a few blocks and asks him about the murders. Travis says that Geller does the work of God and seems angry that he has been too weak to actually commit any of the murders himself. Dexter ends up dropping him off.Travis calls Geller and tells him he isn't feeling well. Geller seems to know something is up.The next day Dexter watches from up the street as Travis get into his car.We then see Sam opening his garage for the day only to be gunned down by an unseen shooter who had been waiting for him.

A Horse of a Different Color
Open with Dexter and Harrison...
more
Open with Dexter and Harrison attending a baptism performed by Brother Sam. Afterwards Sam sits with Dexter and they discuss faith.Dexter is called to the crime scene we saw at the end of last episode. There are four horses, each with some combination of mannequin and human body parts on the saddle. Dexter is instantly intrigued and thinks of his brother. The Alpha/Omega symbol is painted on one of the horse's head. Masuka tells Deb that this was a single victim. New guy Mike Anderson seems to be the only one following the Book of Revelations connection. Dexter thinks this new killer is a "member of my tribe."Nathan Roberts is the name of the jogger victim cut up and placed on the horses. Dexter finds a small piece of paper in his eye with the numbers '1242' written on it. He goes back and looks in the intestines of the fruit vendor and finds a similar piece of paper with '1237.' Deb isn't thrilled that this strange new murderer has shown up so early in her new job. Jamie calls to tell Dexter that Harrison is a little sick.Matthews tells Maria to have Deb give the briefing. She isn't happy.Maria tells Deb she'll be addressing the press, but says that it was her idea.Anderson suggests that Deb may want to dress a little more conservative.Ryan flirts with Masuka and asks him to show her more evidence.Masuka finds out that based on trace evidence it's likely the killer used a ancient weapon, perhaps a sword, to kill Roberts. Anderson explains that the murder is painting a picture with each crime scene, a tableau. The serpents and horses are a direct connection to scripture. Dexter notices that the difference between 1237 and 1242 is five, the same number of days between the murders.Gellar is irritated that Travis is staring at a waitress he finds attractive. Travis wants to ask her out.Dexter drops his car off for repair at Sam's shop. He mentions that he's been reading scripture while researching this new case.A number of People of Interest (religious fanatics with records) are brought in for questioning. Before her briefing Maria tells Deb to be herself.Harry talks to Dexter while he looks at Roberts' body. The disparity between the complexity of some components of the murders and the brutality of others leads them to believe there may be two Doomsday killers.Masuka is informed the hand Ryan stole from evidence is being sold online. He is furious and tells her they are "done."Deb's briefing goes well until she drops several of the biggest curse words on live TV. Anderson notices that Maria seems to enjoy the screw-up.Dexter gets a call from the hospital. Harrison's appendix has ruptured, he has a high fever and he needs emergency surgery. After signing approval for surgery Sam calls about the car. Dexter tells him where he is before hanging up.Angel and Quinn are having trouble finding another one of their Person of Interest. Sitting in Angel's car Quinn finds a joint. Not expecting to have much to do that day they light it up. After they are good and stoned they get a call with the address of the preacher they're looking for.Dexter is in the waiting room with Deb and Jamie. Sam shows up to lend his support. Deb and Jamie leave to get some food. Dexter and Sam have a hear-to-heart, with Sam telling him much of his life story. He's the son of a criminal, having watched his father commit a murder when he was very young. He had a moment in prison where, while trying to choke a man to death in the chapel, he saw a light. Choosing not to kill that guy was one of the best decision he ever made.Dexter goes to get a coffee. The cup is stuck and he has a brief conversation with God, saying he'll do whatever it takes for Harrison to be okay. The cup pops right down.Travis is about to go on his date with the waitress. He asks if he should cancel the date. Gellar says he should do what he wants as "long as you're willing to accept the consequences."Travis' date goes well and the two end up back at his place. They have sex and we see that Gellar is watching them from a crack in the door. The doctor tells Dexter that Harrison will be okay. He thanks Sam for sticking around.Matthews is very happy with how Deb's briefing went. Apparently everybody loves how no-nonsense she appeared. He tells her to keep the good work.Angel and Quinn got a lead from the preacher they met with. He's obsessed with Revelations and told them about a professor named Gellar. Anderson found the same man on a strange website. Gellar has gone "underground," fired from his university for stealing an ancient sword. The sword apparently belonged to John the Revelator. The next morning Travis finds that Gellar has tied his waitress up. He tells her that since Travis "defiled her" she is now "part of God's plan."Dexter talks to Harry about his promise to God. Harry says if there is a God he'd better be ready to "pay the piper." Deb calls him and tells him about Geller and finding an Alpha and Omega outside a crime scene. At the scene Masuka is looking at a dead fish. Dexter spots blood on a nearby handle and they go inside to a greenhouse where Travis' date is hanging in the air, still alive. Before Deb can stop her, one of the cops trips a wire which drops the woman down a few feet, severing her jugular vein and extending her arms to the side. The both have wings attached to them. Dexter hears a buzzing and Angel opens a closet door, releasing thousands of locusts into the air.The locusts escape and head outside. Dexter spots Travis, who while not fitting the middle aged professor description has the smile of a "true believer."

Smokey and the Bandit
It is Deb's first day as Lieutenant....
more
It is Deb's first day as Lieutenant. She and Dexter get a text about a probable homicide. We see that the jogger Travis abducted is held against his will. Travis says he won't be released until he repents to God.The murder victim appears to be a prostitute who has been strangled and beaten, and has a chipped tooth. Quinn is dropped off at the scene (late) by a blonde with whom he obviously has spent the night.Deb is looking at replacing herself on the force. Maria is very forceful in suggesting a candidate. Deb seems about to let Maria make the decision for her until Angel, watching the two women interact, calls her and tells her to stand her ground because if she allows Maria to impose her will on her, she will never be her own woman as a Lieutenant.Dexter finds a notebook from his childhood when he was first tracking serial killers. The "Tooth Fairy" was a favorite, a killer known for murdering prostitutes in Oregon and removing a specific tooth. The prostitute found that day had the exact same tooth (lateral incisor) cracked. Harry reminds him that the tooth fairy would be over 70 years old by now.Dexter stops by a retirement home near the crime scene. He pretends to be looking at a place to send his father and asks about residents from Oregon. He manages to find the name of one possibility, a Walter Kenney, who has been there for five years.Masuka lets Ryan look at evidence from the ice truck killer case. She's particularly interested in a hooker's freeze-dried hand.During Deb's first briefing we learn the prostitute had some cocaine in her system. Dexter thinks about trying to connect it to the Tooth Fairy. Quinn and Deb argue about releasing information about the snakes to drum up a lead. Maria sides with Quinn and takes over the Deb's briefing.Travis wants the jogger to tell God he's sorry. He apologizes and Travis leaves the room. In the other room Geller tells Travis that the jogger is just telling him what he wants to hear. Geller says the jogger has to be pure or "we can't proceed." Geller references picking Travis.Dexter plays golf with Kenney (Ronny Cox). Kenney hurts his back during a swing and asks Dexter to take him to the club bar. Kenney says he was a pipe fitter for 25 years in Oregon. Dexter notices a dental implant in Kenney's lateral incisor. Sam calls Dexter to tell him his car is ready. Kenney asks Dexter to give him a ride the following day.Sam tells Dexter they're having a company party coming up and he should come. It's a baptism of sorts for the guy Dexter helped save from the gang and he tells him he should bring his son. Sam thinks it would be good for Dexter to participate since he played a role.Deb is freaking out about having too much on her plate. Dexter reminds her that she's new to the job. She says she doesn't regret breaking up with Quinn. Dexter finds that Kenney's mother was arrested for hitting her son in the face in public.Dexter shows up at Kenney's house to pick him up. Kenney complains about his good-for-nothing son who won't return his calls. Dexter takes Kenney to fill a prescription and then gets him beer and porno magazines. The last stop is to a storage facility, where Kenney says Dexter can leave him. Dexter watches the old man go into one of the units and close the door.Quinn tries to hit on Ryan and she shoots him down. Deb takes Quinn aside and asks how he's doing. Quinn is particularly bitter and accuses her of choosing her promotion over their relationship. The jogger is able to escape briefly. He runs into a horse inside the church and Travis asks him to make a choice. The jogger falls at Travis feet and begs for forgiveness. Geller tells Travis that he's ready.Dexter waits until Kenney gets on a bus for home and goes into the storage unit. Inside he finds a box filled with teeth, confirming that Kenney is the killer that Dexter followed all those years ago. Dexter thinks about how he's going to kill Kenney (in his apartment) when the phone rings. It's Kenney, who says he's at a bus stop and doesn't know where he is. Dexter picks Kenney up. After a few moments Kenney pull a gun on Dexter. He ran Dexter's plates after the pharmacy trip and found out that Dexter works for homicide. He tells Dexter he's going to kill. Dexter intentionally crashes the car into a chain link fence which activates the air bags.Masuka awkwardly asks Ryan on a date. She happily accepts.Deb tells Maria she's going to go with a different guy to replace her at detective. Maria not only isn't supportive, but threatening because Deb isn't playing ball with her.The guy Deb has selected because of his extensive homicide experience in Chicago, Mike Anderson (Billy Brown), shows up and initially is dismissive when Deb greets him. He assumes that Deb is kidding about being the Lieutenant as part of a hazing ritual. Deb very professionally and forcefully sets him straight, and he apologizes for his attitude, saying he had a tough plane ride.We see that Dexter's plan worked and he now has Kenney secured on the slab of his "kill room" inside Kenney's storage locker where the tooth trophies are kept. Before Dexter kills Kenney, he takes a blood sample and Kenney realizes they are alike. The old man warns Dexter that this is what he has to look forward to. When he gets too old to kill, he'll be miserable. When Dexter realizes that Kenney wants his son to know he was the Tooth Fairy killer, Dexter chooses to smother him with a pillow instead and place him back in his room as just another heart attack victim. As Dexter talks about what's been happening we see Quinn having disinterested sex with another woman. We also see Ryan steal the Ice Truck Killer victim's hand from evidence before going on the date with Masuka. When putting Kenney's blood slide away Dexter drops the entire box. He now has no idea which slide goes with which victim: There's no order anymore. The episode ends with four horses trotting down a busy street. Each has a rider that seems to be a horrific combination of body parts from the jogger and a mannequin.

Once Upon a Time...
Dexter is talking about his nighttime...
more
Dexter is talking about his nighttime ritual putting Harrison to bed. Towards the end of a story Harrison says "Daddy's box" and Dexter is concerned his 2-year old knows too much. The snake-themed murdering duo, Gellar and Travis, working on something. Travis says he's going to be late to their next thing and Gellar isn't happy.Quinn makes Debra a special pancake breakfast. He has her go into the fridge for some juice and she finds an engagement ring. Quinn drops to one knee but Debra cuts him off before he can finish proposing. She's thinks this is coming out of nowhere and wants more time.Debra tells Dexter about the surprise proposal. Dexter's inner monologue tells us he hates the idea, but Debra tells her brother it's a "maybe." She's not sure she's ready to get that serious, but doesn't want to end things.Debra's takedown of the restaurant shooter has become a viral sensation. All the guys are watching it when Debra and Quinn return to the office. The shooter was a disgruntled former employee and the situation seems relatively straightforward. The top priority is Omar (the fruit vendor victim of Gellar and Travis) and the current guess is that since he had some ties to the cartels the murder may have been gang-related. The cops spot a man named Brother Sam (Mos Def) who owns a garage where Omar worked when he got out of jail. Sam is a former prisoner who now hires recently released cons. Nobody in the department trusts him.Matthews is watching Debra's video when Maria drops in to ask about finalizing Angel's paperwork to be named the department's head.Angel interviews Sam while Dexter watches the surveillance camera. We learn that years ago Dexter had considered killing Sam. Sam tells Angel that Omar had moved past the criminal world. He talks about people being able to change. Dexter isn't so sure.Matthews stuns Debra by offering her the lieutenant job that Angel is supposed to be getting. She doesn't accept right away.Dexter examines old files of Sam when he was Samuel Wright and tries to decide if he's changed or not. Harry shows up and they talk about what Harrison knows. Debra shows up and tells Dexter about the job offer. They drink a few beers and Debra eventually decides that she really wants the job.Travis goes to visit a woman who turns out to be his sister Lisa (Molly Parker). They have dinner and he talks about all the "work" he's been doing recently. He says he needs to leave but Lisa talks him into staying since they never see each other anymore.Dexter backs his car into a dumpster so he'll have a reason to take it to Sam's body shop. He goes to Sam's shop and gets an estimate. While Sam looks at Dexter's car he talks about feeling like he's a "shepherd" to the guys he employs. He event admits to having killed a woman and gotten away with it because of a technicality. He says he's a changed man.Masuka and his hot young intern Ryan Chambers (Brea Grant) look at the snakes found inside Omar's body. He ogles her and Angel tells him to be careful.Quinn talks to Dexter about Debra. He asks for some help with Debra, not wanting her to feel like she's choosing between the two of them.Debra takes Angel out for a cup of coffee and tells him about being offered his job. She tells him she told Matthews it was Angel's job but he wouldn't take no for an answer. Angel says all the right things about being proud of her but it's obvious he's furious.Maria tells Angel she thinks Matthews is just using Debra to get back at her. She tells him she'll fix this.Dexter follows Sam as he drives to someone's house. A shot is fired inside the house and Sam brings a body out over his shoulder, places it in his trunk and brings it back to the garage. Dexter wants to snoop around but is caught by Sam's dogs who charge him and hold him at bay with only his syringe as a weapon. Sam comes out and confronts Dexter whose excuse is that he forgot the garage door opener in his glove box and thought it was too late to call.Sam lets him in and Dexter sees that the body Sam brought there is a missing employee who is mixed up in drugs. Sam had punched him out in the course of bringing him back the gunshot he heard was the druggie attempting to commit suicide. While Dexter pretends to grab the opener a car pulls up with three gang member-looking types. They are looking for the employee. Dexter ends up knocking one of the guys out but the ringleader Julio pulls a gun. Julio looks as if he may shoot Sam when he won't give up his employee, but Dexter shows his police badge. On his way out Julio brags about killing someone.Travis goes to see Gellar the night after blowing him off for his sister. Gellar says something about Lisa not being able to be saved. Gellar begins to burn himself with a red-hot piece of metal to show Travis how he is hurting him. Travis promises that he'll never leave him again.Debra returns home. He manages to trace the equipment back to Joey Quinn, not realizing that Stan Liddy is behind it all. He and Lumen burglarize Quinn's apartment and find some of the photos of them at the marina. Dexter learns soon enough just who is behind it. Debra meanwhile has pretty well figured out the case and tells her colleagues about her vigilante theory: that the killer is probably the 13th victim who escaped and that she is likely being helped by a man. Debra is back from the filing department.Angel gives Maria the cold shoulder. Clearly he's still not happy with her recent actions.Debra and Quinn visit Chase's office and are stunned to learn Cole has disappeared. Debra angrily questions Chase about not providing them more information. The result is Chase saying the police will now have to deal solely with his attorney.Dexter and Lumen go to Birch's place. They show her the picture of Cole and his buddies and she immediately clams up and slams the door on them. Dexter tells Lumen she must know something. The police search Cole's place. They find 13 numbered DVDs, each with video of one of the tortured girls. At the office Dexter realizes that once Debra's looks at Lumen's DVD everything will unravel. Masuka is getting close to figuring out there is a living victim. Dexter is able to plant a blank DVD and snag Lumen's from Masuka's desk.Back at the apartment Dexter tells Lumen about Cole's DVDs and gives her the one she is in. The idea of being a number makes Lumen emotional, but she is thankful for his sacrifice. It seems like they're connecting. That night Lumen watches her DVD.Debra tells Dexter she has a theory. She has connected Dan the Dentist with Cole and the tortures. Toss in Boyd's disappearance and the blood at Cole's place and she now believes there is a vigilante taking out the men responsible.Lumen's returns to Birch's place and shows her a phone video of her attack. Birch lets her in. Birch tells Lumen that she was attacked 20 years ago at a summer camp. Chase and his buddies attacked her. Back then Chase was a fat kid named Eugene Grier. She was drugged and woke up in a cabin. She said she was never touched by Chase, but he was able to talk the other guys into doing stuff to her. The look she saw in Chase's face during the attack is what he has all the time now. She was the one who took the picture, and she identifies the fifth and final member of the group as Alex Tilden.Liddy makes sure to run into Dexter in the office. He asks Dexter about his interest in blood. We see Liddy forging Quinn's names on some documents and picking up a bunch of surveillance supplies.Lumen tells Dexter about the meeting with Birch and Tilden. They find a box with trinkets from each of the victims. She takes back her necklace. They pick out a kill room.We see Chase sitting with Birch. Chase promises he's "on top of it" and tells him to maintain his routine. We see that Chase is outside Tilden's place and he watched Dexter and Lumen break into the house. He runs away, directly into Dexter and his hypodermic. Tilden wakes up in the kill room. Dexter says a few choice words and collects his blood sample, just as Debra and Quinn pull into the driveway. They find the door unlocked and search the house. We see that Tilden's kill room is in the vacant house next door.
